There's material on this set that have not been on cd in the US. Not a ton but maybe a half a cd's worth or more. It's very good sounding material. If you keep an eye out it does show up occasionally and sometimes reasonably.
Prestige and Jug came together a few years later I believe than '47 -- '50 or '51. I have the three Chronogical Classics Ammons discs and can recommend them--they aren't hard to find. They reissue 78s from Mercury, Aristocrat, Chess, then Prestige and a few others. Mance is all over the very first one. Ammons was in all sorts of settings, quartet, quintet, sextet, backing singers, big ensembles. He paid his dues and delivered.
I wanted to hear Cassandra’s rich flowing voice.
Cassandra Wilson “After the Beginning Again” Winter & Winter cd
Drums, Percussion – Mark Johnson
Electric Bass – Kevin Bruce Harris
Piano, Synthesizer – James Weisman
Vocals – Cassandra Wilson
I've liked every Ben Thomas release I have heard and this is among the best--a quintet with his vibes, piano, bass and drums and a reedman playing clarinet and tenor. Bobby Hutcherson fans will dig.
And also Ana Maria Shorter.
Here's something I did not know, from wiki:
Singer and actress Tina Turner credits Shorter with saving her life. In Turner's 2020 spiritual memoir Happiness Becomes You, she states that Shorter and his wife Ana Maria provided Turner with critical refuge at their home for six months after Turner left her abusive husband, Ike Turner, in 1976
Bill Evans “The Secret Sessions–recorded at the Village Vanguard 1966-1975” Milestone box set, disc 6
Recorded February 4, 1968, August 23, 1968, September 15, 1968, December 13, 1968, December 22, 1968.
Now on to, in honor of Wayne. . . .
Miles Davis “Bitches Brew” Sony SRCS 9118-9, gatefold lp facsimile 2 cd set, disc 1
Wow, the system is sounding fantastic today!
Discussion here about Gene Ammons has made me grab some cds from the shelves to listen to. This one has some great 78s from Mercury, Chess and Aristocrat. It always amazes me how these French cds from Chronogical Classics sound better and better as my system seasons and improves.
Gene Ammons “1949-1950” Chronogical Classics cd
This is my favorite way to listen to Burt and his music. He actually plays piano on three or four tracks on each of these.
