  1. Wow. I forgot how thrilling the duet between Ella (scat) and Booty Wood (on trombone) was on this Pablo cd! I find the cd sounds best with phase in the “OUT” position on my DAC. Now on to Randy Weston “Solo, Duio & Trio” OJC cd
  2. If it does appear it will be hyped as an incredible lost album!
  3. "A Perfect Match -- Ella and Basie" Pablo cd Everybody is into it.
  4. Louis Armstrong & Duke Ellington “The Making of the Great Summit” Roulette cd One gets to be a fly on the wall for portions of this awesome session. Wow.
  5. One Lee Morgan leads to another, this time. . . . "Caramba" Blue Note Japan SHM-CD
  6. I wish they would revisit the first decade or so of the label which I think could sound so much better with the improvements in sound restoration and playback since the label last compiled some. But I have no interest in LP reissues, and no hope there would be cd reissues. Sigh.
  7. Wow. Lovely Linda Sharrock at 18. Pictures of Linda with Sonny have made me realize she looks a lot like one of my first crushes, Iona Baxter, who lived next to us and often baby sat us when I was in Philadelphia my last two years, when I was 10 and 11. She was the prettiest girl in the neighborhood and she was courted hard; the front steps our "houses" shared were often filled with suitors until Mr. Baxter would open the door and grunt a greeting. "Hello Mr. Baxter!" would be a refrain as they all reluctantly went on their way. . . . Sorry just a memory intruding. I have reached the age where memories arise and seem as real as yesterday's news.
  8. I was thinking of playing a Duke Pearson album, but saw this one first and it has lovely arrangements by Duke with an all-star (imo) cast and it sure sounds nice this morning. Lee Morgan “Standards” Blue Note Japan SHM-CD 600×595 109 KB Arranged By – Duke Pearson Baritone Saxophone – Pepper Adams Bass – Ron Carter Drums – Mickey Roker Flute, Alto Saxophone – James Spaulding Piano – Herbie Hancock Tenor Saxophone – Wayne Shorter Trumpet – Lee Morgan
  9. I’m a big Randy Weston fan and have decided to begin revisiting his earliest recordings which are great listens. This one first: “The Modern Art of Jazz,” released on Dawn Records. 530×536 44.9 KB Recorded in New York City on November 21 and November 22, 1956 Randy Weston - piano Ray Copeland - trumpet Cecil Payne - alto saxophone, baritone saxophone Ahmed Abdul-Malik - bass Wilbert Hogan or Willie Jones - drums Then on to: “The Complete Peggy Lee & June Christy Capitol Transcription Sessions” Mosaic Records disc V 500×507 40.1 KB More Peggy Lee sides with the excellent guitar styling of her then husband Dave Barbour. Great singing and playing and great mono sound, both in the original recording and the mastering for cd.
  10. I'm pretty sure that almost all the Bechet Blue Note material came out on cd from Blue Note if not always on "Bechet only" cds. I wish Blue Note would revisit all the material from the first decade with new up to date mastering. . . but I would prefer not vinyl releases. But I doubt either format will be produced unfortunately.
  11. Over the years I've become a bigger and bigger Bechet nut. I have all the Masters Of Jazz (Media7) volumes (thanks to purchase on this board) and all the Chronogical Classics that feature material after the dates on the Masters of Jazz, a good handful of later appearances, and duplicate individual discs that I can't or won't yet part with. I love his clarinet sound! I wish he played it more, but his playing on other reed instruments always excite as well.
  12. Another good Calvin Keys cd! Calvin Keys "Electric Keys"
  13. Tony Williams "Civilization" Blue Note cd. This group's work on Blue Note didn't seem to attract me much at the time but this decade I'm enjoying their releases much more.
  14. 640×562 61.8 KB Bobby Hutcherson “Total Eclipse” Universal Japan Never a “great recording” perhaps but I love this music.
  15. John Mayall “Back to the Roots” disc 1 of 3, from the excellent Mayall box set. I used to listen to this 2 LP set a lot in the 'seventies. Still have it.
  16. Monday Michiru “Nexus” This woman has so much going for her. Her lyrics are straight-forward yet have a wide scope of adult experience and have insight and positive statements. And her music composition and synthesis and fusion is organized and interesting even when there’s more “house” and other elements I’m not crazy about there’s plenty to listen for and enjoy. She’s a capable arranger and band-leader and hires intelligently. Her voice is a thread that weaves so much together. This is one of her mature, reflective, yet joyful releases. Sound is quite good. 630×795 47 KB
  17. “The Complete Recordings of T-Bone Walker 1940-1954” Mosaic Records disc IV I just love this music, glad I am revisiting this excellent box set.
  18. The new official Hendrix release. 1200×1620 223 KB I have to say it sounds really good in comparison to the “Lifelines” earlier release and bootlegs. On to Eddie Daniels with Gary Burton “Benny Rides Again” GRP cd
  19. Jackie Cain & Roy Kral “One More Rose: a Tribute to Allan Jay Lerner” Audiophile Records cd More Jackie and Roy with vibes!
  20. Joe Lovano / Greg Osby "Friendly Fire" Blue Note cd Haven't played this one in a few years, and whenever I revisit something after that long I notice how much better it sounds because the system sounds so good now. What a band. I forgot how good Cameron Brown can be on bass, and Jason Moran and Idris Muhammed bring a lot.
  21. Listening to something very familiar as I made a change to the DAC–added a specially designed plug for the USB input that has removed another veil of noise. It’s amazing how “noise”–so much more in our environment than decades ago–is something that when incrementally removed creates sonic improvement. And it seems there is always more noise to be eliminated. Miles Davis “Sorcerer” Mobile Fidelity SACD
  22. You're right, he is a master.
  23. Big cliffhanger, long wait.
  24. Some quiet music as the rest of the house sleeps. “The Complete Master Jazz Piano Series” Mosaic Records, cd III. I like this set and this is perhaps my favorite disc, featuring Jay McShann, Teddy Wilson and Cliff Smalls. Followed by Keith Jarrett “The Bordeaux Concert” ECM
  25. I don't visit this box set often mainly because I have better sounding (to me, in my systems) versions of the material I listen to most in the set than the sound in this box set. But I don't quite share your dislike of the material. And to set the record straight there are no sides from "Get Up With It" from this set--all those sides were recorded later than this "period" of Miles Davis' New Directions in Music. There are three tracks that made it onto the original "Big Fun" release (and two that were added for some reason--they don't really fit to me--to the later cd reissue) and one studio track from "Live/Evil" is included on this box set.
