Bob Dylan "Time Out of Mind" Sony Blu-Spec CD2 The Blu-Spec CD2 series of lp facsimile cds of the Dylan catalog sound fantastic.

I just put "Time Out of Mind" in the player. This one keeps growing on me. Some of the lyrics seem to be written just for me at a period in my life. The next volume of the Bootleg Series is rumored to cover this album period. Vol. 8 did perviously ("Tell Tale Signs") and if I had to I'd grab my 3 disc version of that set to take to a deserted isle.

Johnny Griffin "Lady Heavy Bottom's Waltz" Rearward cd A great small group recording drawn from the personnel of the Clarke Boland Big Band. This sure does have a heavy bottom with both of the maestro drummers and the big rich sound of Jimmy Woode. And Johnny Griffin. . .I think he got lucky and didn't get a speeding ticket on this one.

This and "The Big Sleep" rival each other as my favorites. Chandler is such a trip to read. "Coming up for Air" George Orwell. I love reading Orwell novels. This one is interesting as it's in the first person.

For me he started getting really interesting in the 'nineties on.

I listened to one of my favorite ever cds, "Morning in Paris," Duke Ellington and Sathima Bea Benjamin--plus Billy Strayhorn, and amazing pizzicato violin by Ray Nance. An intimate, very low key, chamber jazz recording. Benjamin was then Dollar Brand's wife, and Duke was in Paris with a go ahead from Reprise Records to produce records and he recorded one with Dollar Brand and one with Bud Powell and Aiice Babs. I love them all. Benjamin has a unique phrasing and an amazing control of her voice on super slow tempos. A beautiful album. Then on to Chick Corea and Origin "A Week at the Blue Note," disc 2. This is one of my very favorite collections of recordings by Corea and this great ensemble he had together for a spell.

The Woody Shaw Concert Ensemble at the Jazz Berliner Stage, Muse Records. I'm listening to this on the appropriate cd from the Mosaic Shaw Muse box set. Excellent performances and sound.

Barney Wilen with the Mal Waldron Trio "Movie Themes from France" A powerful cd newly remastered and released in Japan.

Ella Fitzgerald and the Duke Ellington Orchestra "Ella at Duke's Place" Verve cd Seems to me Strayhorn is all over this though he is seldom mentioned or credited on releases. Flipping soothing stuff that draws you in. And then swings you out.

A contender for consideration as one of the most bizarre funk and jazz albums ever. Three masterful drummers are on these tracks so they have a real groove that is attention-grabbing. For me it works as a "party" disc. Party of one. Archie Shepp "The Losers" Impulse Records/Universal Japan cd

My parents had jazz albums that I spun, Ellington, Basie, Brubeck, Goodman, Miller I know for sure, but I didn't own them. The first that I owned were gifts of a Peace Corps volunteer who my Dad directed in Swaziland (one of my brothers thinks it was Chris Matthews who was among those volunteers, but I don't think it was, at least I don't remember specifically who it was). In 1968 Atlantic Records sent a box of twelve or so records to each volunteer as a sort of care package. Many didn't have any record player to play them on, and passed them on. I ended up with three mono copies of jazz albums: Sister Salvation, Blues Shout, and Another Dimension. Those efforts by Slide Hampton, Leo Wright, and Charles Bell and the Contemporary Jazz Quartet were fascinating to me, I played them over and over and they are definitely responsible contributors to the love of jazz that grew and grew from then on.

I dig it too. There are some really good performances here.

We're old collectors. Besides improved mastering some of these titles are "officially" out of print and the most recent issues have been in Japan. New to jazz persons could be more excited. Thanks for the headsup David! -

Mosaic to release 1960s Freddie Hubbard set
jazzbo replied to J.A.W.'s topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
With the Black & White set they had an issue where they had to ask customers who had pre=ordered to recharge their cards as the first charge had "timed out." Perhaps they are charging immediately and also taking orders and shipping so soon to circumvent those problems for customers and Mosaic. -
Bud Freeman "1945-1946" Chronogical Classics cd https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-w4iEGpZpckw/TpQ-KCZoaiI/AAAAAAAABLo/PxPLxZiV7Ow/s1600/Bud+Freeman+1945-46b.jpg Possibly the least essential of the Bud Freeman Classics discs as there's some tom-foolery here (making fun of modern jazz in the high falutin' accent that he liked to project) and a lot of sides with a female singing group that aren't the cat's meow. But still. . . a fun listen for a Friday morning.
