This new Pepper set sounds very good. I'm not a huge Pepper fan, but these quartets are good listening.
-
I love this and have neglected to spin it for too long. Cassandra Wilson "Coming Forth by Day" Blue Note Japan SHM-CD
-
A new arrival. . . . Barney Wilen Quartet "Live in Tokyo '91" Followed by Art Pepper "So In Love" from the new "Complere Artist House Recordings" box set
-
Nat Birchall Quartet "The Storyteller" Very good sound, wonderful music.

I have them both on separate discs. Bert was a great player. And Kenny Clarke!
-
I managed to find a very well-priced set of these SACDs discounted because the binding in the folios had come undone. Beautiful sound. I am only intimately familiar with two other complete cycles of these sonatas, but I think the playing is very good.

From Zev Feldman's facebook page, fourth album discussed: QUADRUPLE PLAY for RSD BLACK FRIDAY! I'm spreading the love for Record Store Day Black Friday this year with a quartet of recordings I produced for 3 different record labels. ALL available, Friday, Nov. 29th: For Resonance, we have the first vinyl edition of our widely acclaimed release by the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Orchestra "All My Yesterdays: The Debut 1966 Recordings at the Village Vanguard" and, back by popular demand, a new 2LP gatefold pressing for the first time at 33 1/3 RPM of Bill Evans "Live at Art D'Lugoff's Top of the Gate" feat. Eddie Gomez and Marty Morell from 1968 in NYC. Both of these albums are were recorded by Resonance founder and co-president, George Klabin, and are being released as limited-edition, hand-numbered sets mastered by the legendary Bernie Grundman and pressed at RTI on 180g black vinyl. More info at resonancerecords.org On Cory Weeds' Reel To Real label, I'm thrilled to present a previously-unissued 1962 recording of Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis & Johnny Griffin called "OW! - Live at the Penthouse" with pianist Horace Parlan, bassist Buddy Catlett and Art Taylor on drums. Boasting remastered audio from the original 10" tapes, "OW!" comes with an extensive booklet including rare photos; essays by noted writer Ted Panken, pianist Michael Weiss; plus interviews with saxophonist James Carter, drummer Kenny Washington and more! More info at cellarlive.com Last, but not least, a never-before-released 1969 STUDIO album from the legendary Brazilian jazz-bossa group Tamba 4 called "California Soul" on Elemental Music. Originally produced by jazz icon Creed Taylor for A&M Records and recorded by Rudy Van Gelder at his studio, "California Soul" was set to be the follow up to the album "Samba Blim," but the release was shelved and 50 years later is finally seeing the light of day thanks in large part to the efforts of DJ Greg Caz. The limited-edition 180g LP is mastered by Kevin Gray at Cohearant audio and pressed by Memphis Press. More info at www.elemental-music.com

There's a previously unreleased Tamba 4 album made for A&M coming out. . . that should be a good one.

Installed the new OS for my DAC, "Windom," and it is sounding quite nice. Right now Gary McFarland "Soft Samba" Verve Japan cd.

Gil Melle "Patterns in Jazz" Blue Note Japan 24 bit by RVG LP Facsimile cd. What a band! And Melle was responsible for bringing Alfred Lion and Rudy Van Gelder together. Gil Mellé - tenor saxophone, baritone saxophone Eddie Bert - trombone (tracks 1-4) Joe Cinderella - guitar Oscar Pettiford - bass Ed Thigpen - drums

Now on to something completely different: my first listen of the remix of "The White Album." I can remember hearing this album when I first arrived at boarding school in M'Babane. Never was a huge Beatles fan but liked some of this album more than most of other Beatles albums. Remix is interesting. . . won't replace the original but a nice new window to look this material.

Yes, it happens to me most with Duke as well. And there is so much to listen to . . . over and over. And as you say it's all at least pretty good! Now on to Duke Ellington & His Orchestra "Jazz at the Plaza" Sony Japan cd.
-
One Ellington leads to another, which often happens. A single disc from that '56 to '62 Columbia period snags me into a long series of disc after disc of Ellington at times. Not a bad thing to happen. Right now Disc 2 from the "Ella & Duke at the Cote D'Azur," Verve cd.
-
Duke Ellington "Midnight in Paris" CBS France cd. I always liked this session. Has that bit of sloppiness I love about the Ellington band. . . they're well lubricated and having fun. Right now Ray Nance is playing violin and it's always a pleasure to hear Ray Nance.
