In 1964 the Train Station became a working place for artists of all kinds - among them Marcel Marceau. 600 guests were invited to Marcel Marceau´s party near old river Rhine. Sahib Shihab, Francy Boland, Fats Sadi, Benjamin Wood, Kenny Clarke, Joe Harris

Followed by Another excellently recorded Adventure Music cd, this time from Benjamin Taubkin, "Al Qantara - the Bridge". . . the bridge being music that spans the cultures of Brazil and Morocco.

David Hazeltine Trio "The Jobim Songbook in New York" SACD Can you say "Mellow?" That's what this is. RIP John. We will miss you!

Had some all over the map listening today. Started with Miles Davis, "Pangaea," the Japanese LP facsimile 20 bit remaster from '96. Then moved to Bob Dylan, "Blood on the Tracks," Mobile Fidelity Lab SACD. Followed by Wes Montgomery. "Full House" on DCC gold cd, sure haven't heard that in a long time. Moved to Stan Getz, "Getz a Go Go," Verve Original cd. And finished up with a new arrival from today's mail delivery, "J.R. Monterose," Blue Note Japan "24 bit by RVG" cd.

"A Date with Jimmy Smith, Vol. 1" Blue Note Japan "24 bit by RVG" LP facsimile cd. Followed by Alice Babs&Duke Ellington "Serenade to Sweden" Reprise CD (Collector's Choice)

I often shy away from the bombastic and extroverted Ellington performances and really shouldn't. This one is really hitting the sweet spots today. Duke Ellington "Festival Session" Columbia CD (from the second "Columbia Albums" box set from Legacy).
-
Johnny Hartman, "For Trane" Blue Note cd. Followed by Jefferson Airplane "Surrealistic Pillow" Mobile Fidelity SACD (mono) Been too long since I listened to the Pillow.

It's a gray market European thing that collects the alternate takes, and has a W.C. Handy interview and a few other performances by Louis of St.Louis Blues. Will be irrelevant as far as the real LP goes when the next Armstrong Mosaic set is released.

"Louis Armstrong Plays W.C. Handy" Complete Edition, disc 2 Listening via Oppo PM-1 headphones and my Decware CSP3 preamplifier with 25th Anniversary mods while watching a cold wind blow through the wet autumn leaves on these beautiful trees here. Nice to be warm and dry.

I have UCCQ-9525 too. You'll like it. These days in the current edition of my system the "24 bit by RVG" discs are really sounding wonderful so I've been playing those versions of these albums. It's as if Rudy created a character for each of these that comes through. Accurate? No. But some are very vivid and all grab my attention and keep it. Now, another recording of the Tannenberg organ in Salem. This is a very impressive organ built by my great great great great great grandfather, and fully restored. Great sound too. Peter Sykes, "Salem's Large Tannenberg's Organ Restored"

A wonderful trio of albums to listen to back to back to back. Stan Getz "Sweet Rain" Verve Original cd. This was a perfect trio to support Stan moving a step forward. Horace Silver "Further Explorations of the Horace Silver Quintet" Blue Note Japan 24 bit by RVG LP facsimile cd. I'm beginning to think that Horace may have been positioning himself as the "Dave Brubeck of Hardbop." "Exploring" and visiting Tokyo, the Cape Verdean Islands, Mexico . . . . Man the trio sections of this date are really something, and those who diss Rudy's piano sound . . . well I like it on this record for sure. Nancy Harms, "Ellington at Night" (sorry couldn't find a smaller photo). http://jazzpolice.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/Nancy-Harms-Ellington-at-Night-CD-Cover.jpg I like this one much more than I thought I might. Could do without the strings which I don't think add what the artist and producer thought they might, but a nice batch of interpretations. In a way Harms makes me think of a Rickie Lee Jones that decided not to be a songwriter but to seriously interpret jazz. Very good recording.

Nat Birchall "Akhenaten" . . . very nice. I'm enjoying Nat's work, he nails the early 'sixties Coltrane feel both compositionally and in execution, but in his own way at the same time.

The musicians here, what drew you to the instrument you play?
jazzbo replied to Hardbopjazz's topic in Musician's Forum
I came to playing instruments at first late in my teens (keyboards) and even later for other instruments. Tony Williams, Kenny Clarke and Jack DeJohnette led me to want to play drums. And Jimi Hendrix led me to play guitar and bass. And the fact that there was a piano in a little room across the hall from my dorm room inspired me to tackle keyboards. -
News about the upcoming Mosaic Studio RCA and Columbia set from co-producer/annotator Ricky Ricardi: I'm calling it: as of 4:11 p.m., I now have a complete draft of my liner notes for the next Mosaic Records Louis Armstrong set! 29,944 words. There'll be some changes made as we're still in the process of selecting takes and sequencing the discs but I think I have a good handle on it. Anyway, let it be known this that set will be my big punctuation mark for all of my work on Armstrong's later years. There'll be more projects--I'm already in talks with multiple labels about some exciting All Stars-related projects--but this set, with Handy, Fats, the Real Ambassadors, Mack, all the RCA stuff, singles, alternate takes, rehearsals, other surprises this is the set I want to be remembered by.

Stan Getz Quartet "Getz at the Gate" Verve, disc 2
-
Gary Bartz "Bartz" . . . . The cheesiest of Bartz records probably. But I love Bartz' sound and "singing playing" so much that I just listen past the discoed arrangements to his "voice." He had such joy and energy at this time.
-
Grant Green "Am I Blue?" Blue Note Japan LP Facsimile cd. Followed by Miles Davis "Bitches Brew" Sony Japan SACD (the very first one issued). This is my favorite version of the "remix" and the most "crankable" one I have of the remix.
-
Bobby Hutcherson (with Joey Defrancesco and David Sanborn) "Enjoy the View" Blue Note cd I'd enjoy this one more if there were a different drummer; Billy Hart just doesn't do it for me here.
-
Yes, I love it, but there are dozens of Jarrett sessions I love.
