  4. Had about 90 minutes to listen on headphones so I decided to fill it with some boppin' jive. Babs Gonzales "Tales of Manhattan" Followed by Babs Gonzales "Voila!"
  5. Excited to hear this set. I discovered I did pre-order this via PayPal when Mosaic was gauging interest in this set last year. So far no shipping notice etc. I emailed Mosaic and have not heard back. Sigh. May have to call next week. . . .

    Billy Harper

I agree, not my experience either.
  7. This 1989 cd sounds pretty good, but I wish there was a recent remaster as it's a great session and could sound better. It includes the song I wanted to hear, the Ellington tune "Just a Lucky So and So." I was wanting to hear that today, I'm that lucky bastard and know it. Gil Evans & Helen Merrill "Collaboration" Emarcy CD Also I put on Duke Ellington "And his Mother Called Him Bill." This week I got news that my sister's husband's lymphoma seems to have returned after 11 years. . . . Sad news and made me think of "Blood Count."
  8. I sent a query to Mosaic today because I'm pretty sure I pre-ordered and want to see if they have my order. Yes, I have the Savory set and my Dad read a review about it and was intrigued so that was a good clue for an Xmas present for him. He's become a Fats Waller fan thanks to my exposing him to him and he'll definitely enjoy that portion of the set.
  9. Thelonious Monk "Live in Rotterdam 1967" Devialet 2 cd set, disc 2 This is that wonderful ensemble that he toured with and Johnny Griffin in particular is excellent on this tour.
  10. I'd love to see some Cassandra Wilson that has not been released before. I know there must be some live and possibly studio from the years past and present that could be assembled. I love that lady.
  11. Wanted to hear the system rocking out and put on a blast from my past. I don't think Grace and Jack have ever been better presented and these were innovative arrangements. Jefferson Airplane "Crown of Creation" Culture Factory cd
  12. Very little of this is new to me. What is new is how wonderful the mastering is here. Makes many other releases sound dull or even muffled.
  13. Hittin' this set. . . the transfers are amazing, makes other issues of this material sound "dull" if not muffled. Nat King Cole "Hittin' the Ramp: The Early Years (1936-1943)" Followed by Miles Davis "Miles in Berlin' Sony LP Facsimile 20 bit cd. This recording has rightfully been panned somewhat--the horns are often under-recorded, especially in ensemble, but I LOVE the way that Herbie, Ron and Tony are recorded here, the energy in these performances really comes through, and all are in fine form for Wayne's earliest recording with the group. And because I haven't put it back in the shelves yet, I am re-spinning this one, Miles Davis "Vol.1" Blue Note Japan "24 Bit by RVG" lp facsimile cd. Over time I've learned to like these early sessions as a leader more and more, and the sound on these RVG transfers is very vivid and dynamic.
  14. Congrats Cliff! What a great experience.
  15. I bought the Mosaic in '92 or so. I did compare the Blue Note set to the Mosaic and I've kept the Mosaic because I thought it sounded better. Took the 75th Anniversary releases from Japan on SHM-CD and the releases after that of this material to better the Mosaic sound for me.
  16. The Mosaic was 4 discs, the Grant Green-Sonny Clark Blue Note was two discs. https://www.allmusic.com/album/the-complete-blue-note-recordings-of-grant-green-with-sonny-clark-mw0000913417 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Complete_Quartets_with_Sonny_Clark
  17. The two cd Blue Note set is included in the box set; the Mosaic also includes additional material.
  18. Good news! A copy of the Savoy set I ordered for my Dad for Xmas just was "forwarded to the warehouse for shipping." Here's hoping that my Herman ships soon!
  19. 8 to 10 inches here so far overnight and this morning here in NE Ohio (Lake Effect area, Geauga County). And it's still falling. Just got back from clearing the deck, steps and driveway for the second time since 7 a.m. I've been doing some comparison listening this morning. I first listened to the "Vol. 1" material on the Complete Blue Note Recordings of Miles Davis "Pure Audio Blu-ray" disc, and then listened to the same material on the Japanese "24 Bit by RVG" lp facsimile version. Different resolutions, different mastering. . . I have to say both had positive characteristics and I like them both! I could hear "further into" the Blu-ray, but the RVG had real snap, crackle and pop (in good ways!)

  21. A remarkable man who will be missed.
  22. I'm listening to disc 2 of "The Complete Bill Evans on Verve" which includes "Converstions with myself" and the first half of all the released material from "Trio '64." I have a real love/hate relationship with this set. I bought the "rusting" set when it first came out and when it went out of print someone offered me a lot for it and I sold it. I bought the "budget" clamshell version when it came out, though I missed the actual discs of the original set, if not the crazy packaging and weirdly printed book. And then I saw on eBay someone selling just the metal bracket with all the discs of the original set for not too much and I bought that and sold the budget set for a bit less than I paid for it (and it's really gone up in value). Meanwhile I waited and waited for the discs I ordered to arrive from France. . . and after the prescribed waiting period I contacted the seller that I hadn't received them. Without much explanation he sent me a tracking number and apparently he had never sent the set to me, but he did expedite the shipping. I finally received the discs last week and have been listening. So much great music!
  23. Yes, that was a great series of reissues. The Byrd albums were reissued again this decade by TOCJ and sound great. . . but that one track from the sampler was not added to "Byrd's Eye View."
  24. That's my favorite in this set! I'm not crazy about a lot of the set, but I'm crazy about Pee Wee.
