New Lester Young set from Mosaic Records coming
jazzbo replied to ghost of miles's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Oh yeah, I sure do. -
I have one and should use it more often I guess. I've had to replace the reverb unit and I'm not crazy about how it acts when working right. But a nice range of Fender sounds with this one.

New Lester Young set from Mosaic Records coming

The wait continues. . . but it's intensified. . . . -
The Wire, Season 1, on Blu-ray.

I just ordered this from amazon. Thanks for the heads up.

It was an Epiphone product, no longer made. Was a combo unit, and also a head unit available. Used ones are out there. It was never expensive, good value for money in my estimation. Ebay shows some available.

I corrected my pic because I realize that one has a "mod" done on it that circulates as a kit. I don't have such a mod on mine, no tone control at all, just a volume knob and like four watts of power. Mine did have the Eminence speaker which is a good one. Personally I like amps that I can use for both my basses and my guitars, and the smallest, lightest one that works for me with both is a Fender Musicman bass amp with a Celestion speaker installed. Almost as light as the Epiphone, but the 12" speaker works better for bass and there is a tone knob to cut the treble.

I have never used anything smaller than an Epiphone Valve Jr. which is a very nice amp if a bit too bright for my tastes. I generally like the sound of larger amps, just don't like to pick them up and place them down. This is a very "garbage in and garbage out" amp, a very simple and clear circuit that will tell you what your pickups and cabling sound like, sometimes with brutal honesty.

I imagine patience will bring a "price point" eventually. This is only three cds. Right now you can get rather decent prices on the earlier, larger sets, sure they were more expensive before but time has changed that.

Awesome story Jeff! There are good people about.

I'm in too.

They are using the real tapes. Columbia let them have it, I think because Betty was on board, don't remember the notes specifying.

Savoy set coming from Mosaic
jazzbo replied to ghost of miles's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Yes, why I would like to see the Impulse material in one box. Slightly more plausible Mosaic would do so.- 153 replies

Savoy set coming from Mosaic
jazzbo replied to ghost of miles's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Yes, it's the nature of the beast . . . we were collecting at the right time. New collectors won't have the same opportunities but have other delights. That's the name of the game in collecting. I'd like to see more box sets with Impulse material, such as all the Yusef Lateef or box sets of Ornette material (eventually I'd love to see the two Impulse titles reissued and there have to be some others about).- 153 replies

About a decade ago when I was still using an iPod I was listening to an audience tape and walking around and when Pigpen started to sing "Hard to Handle" it seemed like someone behind me to my right starting singing along with him. I actually glanced over in that direction, it sounded so "real."

Savoy set coming from Mosaic
jazzbo replied to ghost of miles's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Another set where many of us already have (and a number of us multiple) copies of the material. But again it will probably be an excellent assemblage. Looking forward to details.- 153 replies

Question for Grateful Dead aficionados.
jazzbo replied to Scott Dolan's topic in Miscellaneous Music
The sound quality varies but for the most part we jazz collectors have been exposed to a lot of different sounding recordings and these are probably more enjoyable by us than by other rock and pop collectors and listeners. I've never cringed when listening to them. I haven't really developed many favorites. My Dead listening has lessened progressively the last few years and I listen to Dick's Picks in a sort of random manner, when I go through the shelves (which are not organized by artist or label or in any pervasive order) and chance upon one to pop in. Aligning with my interests lately those I think of as recent "favorites" are those from '68 and '69. I like 16, 22, and 26. And yeah, get any Fillmore date. If you're thinking of collectablity or future resale, I bet the new July 1978 box set will increase in value and it has some really "almost exactly perfectly really great" performances. -

"The Porch Crusher." I didn't get this because I'm not interested in the later years. . . but what a set. -

Credit really belongs to Starthrower, he pointed the way. So much Dead to enjoy. . . even if like me you only collect up to '78. The band keeps cranking shows out. Next one is Dave's Pick 19, Hawaii in January '70. Looking forward to that. -

It's on disc 5 of Dick's Picks 29, not the end of the disc, but the end of the first set of May 21. 1977; the next track is the beginning of the second set. -
I think he's referencing this 3 cd set on "Savoy Jazz."

Yes: 1970 and Pigpen features makes me happy.
