I think he's referencing this 3 cd set on "Savoy Jazz."
-
Yes: 1970 and Pigpen features makes me happy.
-
Yes, I have both the two cds and the two LP set. Good stuff! Love hearing Klook with these guys.

I really like them as well, haven't spun them for a while, need to dig them out. I like all I've ever heard from Shihab, especially with CBBB and splinter groups.

Charlie Parker Unheard Bird: The Unissued Takes 2016 Verve

CD sounds good. It's Strings and South of the Border and more. -
A huge batch of Coltrane SHM-CD are coming out in August including a number of Impulse titles on August 24.

I've nearly every CD in the Savoy series that Denon put out in the US and Japan in the 'nineties. Thought these were excellent reissues in sound and I loved exploring a lot of the titles I had never heard before. I really like the way the Bird tracks were presented on the original Savoy LPs reissued in this series, and all the Hank Jones, Donald Byrd and Curtis Fuller titles were wonderful. I wish they had done more of the Lateefs.

Well, after the last disc in the Season 1 Blu-ray set won't play in any of the three machines I have on hand to try, I moved on to the Season 2 Blu-ray set of X-Files. These new Blu-ray editions look and sound amazing.

I generally agree, but to be honest I think the mono mixes are decent on many sessions and extraordinary on some. Whenever I've been able to compare I generally prefer Atlantic mono releases.

From this page: http://www.atlanticrecords.com/posts/father-atlantic-sound-18236 Tom Dowd’s efforts to eliminate the technical woes of the recording process helped expose music recording as a new artform. He pioneered the use of a series of new technologies in the recording studio and helped standardize a number of revolutionary recording practices that are still employed today. For instance, at Dowd’s insistence, Atlantic Records was the first label to issue “true” stereo recordings and to use 8-track recording in its studios. The first Ampex 8 track recording machine was sold to Les Paul in 1957. And from this page: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_multitrack_recording#Ampex.27s_original_8-track_recorder The second Ampex model 5258 8-track 3 was sold to Atlantic Records at Tom Dowd's insistence in early 1958.[6] Atlantic was the first record company to use a multi-track recorder in their studio.

The Columbia Miles only really remixed one new mono reissue, the others were original mono mixes. I think Kevin is saying that the original mono mixes were created from the eight track recordings as were the original stereo mixes.

It's definitely all about the mix, any way the tapes might be made. I'm enjoying the mixes.

I only paid 39 dollars, total, for this set, and I think it's well-priced and the sound is excellent. I have one of the missing on mono vinyl, and one of the missing on mono CD, and it's enough for now. Worth it for me to explore the sound, and I'm still collecting, I'm still in the mode. Shouldn't be, but I am. I totally understand someone not buying this and for good reasons, but I'm happy to have it and am enjoying exploring it.

Nicely-produced, nicely-mastered and nicely-priced CD edition arrived today. Listening to Giant Steps now. Very satisfying listening at that. I'm going to enjoy this set.
-
None of it is essential. It was fun to hear though, and I'll spin it again. . . and again. Not junk. Junk food maybe.

I watched half of the latest episode of Preacher and gave up on the series. I wanted to like it, especially because Ruth Negga is in it, but. . . .ultimately it doesn't do much for me. Watched the latest Unreal, and am about to tackle the last two episodes of Houdini&Doyle.

Awesome! Congrats. I have this on cd, and LP. Love the variety of material and the excellent performances.

Over the years I've come to rely on the Blue Note material for a quick and intense Monk fix. But all periods are great. .. and I also have a lot of unofficial recordings. I came into Monk through the Columbia years and I can pick almost any one of them and place them in a tray or on a platter and really enjoy myself. I do really like the first two Riversides, and also the Vogue recording.

Well, I no longer have the wrapper and I don't see "Made in Mexico" at the moment. Bird is the word. -

Best of luck! I've got the more recent European two cd set and I'm good. It sounds fine. Who knows, it may even be a clone of the Japanese set. -
One of my credit cards automatically stops my card and gives me a fraud message every time I order from amazon.fr or amazon.de or amazon.co.uk The other credit card company does the same thing when I order from cdjapan.co.jp None of these companies are being fraudulent. I have to call or answer a call and "approve" the purchases. I once reached someone and said "I do business with these companies and they treat me right, please don't put my card on hold when I do." "Okay" they said. Still happens more often than not.
