  1. Thanks for straightening that out, it's been a while since that cd has seen the light of day.
  2. Patience. I think there's more to come.
  3. They are tying in to the Newport Festival which will have a 60th anniversary tribute of some sort to the reknown '55 festival appearance by Miles that led to his Columbia signing and subsequent huge fame. I am puzzled by the '69 full appearance here but at least it was a DVD before and is CD here--not everyone transfers audio from one format to another (I sure don't). And perhaps a full release of the '75 is planned and this is just a teaser to represent that part of the Newport related material. As for what is holding them back. . . my guess is two main factors. One. . . CDs are just not a priority the way they certainly were twenty years ago when Miles CDs were huge news and huge promotions etc. And two. . . I suspect the family has different ideas than the record label and also their pecuniary ideas seem to offer little incentive to the label.
  4. I don't know why this would rule out anything! I think it's a good idea. After two volumes of 'lectric Miles, they came up with a catch all concept to cover a 'fifties, 'sixties and 'sixties string of shows, something for everyone. Sony doesn't care if stuff has been out on bootleg before, that's the point of this series, to encompass bootleg material. And there's plenty of other stuff from '71 to '75 that can be used in future sets. I have more than one hundred bootlegs myself and there are many many shows in great sound that could feed this series for more than a decade. We just have to see if Sony can keep their reissue department and the estate interested.
  5. Hope it's a great one!
  6. Many happy happy returns!
  7. There's supposedly more to it, including one of the discs as a DVD. From a London member at the Steve Hoffman forum: Looks like this definitely contains Newport 55, Dietikon 71 (one or both sets?), and New York 1 July 75. As for the rest, apparently there's something from Berlin and something from Summer 69. Newport 69 & Berlin 69 (DVD) have already been released but I assume one or both will be on there.
  8. Next release: I didn't see this one coming: http://artsbeat.blogs.nytimes.com/2015/04/30/miles-davis-at-newport-a-four-disc-set-coming-in-july/?_r=0
  9. No, that's not what I am saying. What I will say is that I listened to this cd a few times while doing other things and did not hear anything that made me think this was an LP transfer, it sounded better than the two earlier cds I had, and I really like it.
  10. Well, this SHM-CD is the Redbook copy to get then as it sounds best here to me, few lp artifacts to draw attention to themselves. A great Blue Note album however sourced.
  11. I have it. and have spun it a few times, haven't sat down and given it a real analytical listen. I have no way of "confirming" its source but to me it does not sound particularly like a needle drop. If it is, it is better done than the two previous cds.
  12. Japan has a system that works well for their market, and little interest in other markets. . . . I don't always understand what they do, don't have enough information, but they have a strategy and implement it well.

  14. Your own ears are your own confirmation. If it sounds better to you, it is better for your listening.
  15. Good news! Looking forward to this one.
  16. Bernie Grundman transfers feature bonus tracks on the US released cd sets from last year fyi. Personally I doubt these new reissues use new masterings. . . .I think you're going to discover a lot are RVGs or the earlier 24 bit masterings that appeared before the 75th anniversary series that many have complained about. Doesn't seem as if anyone here has a Blue Note Japan connection. Perhaps someone could query Michael Cuscuna.
  17. I just love these Parker novels.
  18. I agree, there is music here that will languish in obscurity longer, and shouldn't.
  19. I don't have answers to that. Bernie Grundman seems to be transfering the master tapes into high resolution digital. Some of these seem to be sold as high resolution downloads. The Blue Note releases from the US last year (Miles, Monk, Brown, Coltrane) seem to use these transfers mastered by other engineers. There are some who believe that these transfers are used by Japanese engineers to master the SHM-CD releases from Japan.
  20. I happen to like RVGs for the most part, they sound like real music to me more often than not (as opposed to the TOCJ warm record sound). But I do really like these SHM-CDs.
  21. Yes, that was a good finale. Lots of balls up in the air! Now watching The Shield Season 5. Surprising how much I like that show.
  22. I have a Patton and a Roach that I did a brief comparison on when they arrived. The new cds have a crisper, more detailed sound, and a more spacious sound stage presentation. They lack that warm presentation many like in the early Japanese series (and that I find a bit dull). I think if you in general enjoy the kind of qualities that recent Japanese remasterings bring to Blue Note and other labels you would consider the new ones a small step up. If you particularly like the TOCJ sound as many do there probably isn't a real need to buy the new ones.
  23. They should have gotten Pee Wee Marquette for half a motherfucker of an lp.
  24. With the Jazz World celebrating 100 years of Lady Day's birth, and when no new musical material seemed to be possibly added to the singer's large and wonderful output, Uptown Records presents this collection of 2-CDs devoted to Billie, on which various previously unknown broadcast recordings come to light. The subtitle speaks about Holiday's impossibility to work in New York clubs during most of those years, due to losing her cabaret card (a document issued by the New York police) because of her problems with drugs and alcohol. The broadcasts present her in various different venues, in America and abroad, and with a diversity of accompanying musicians. But what's most remarkable here, as it couldn't be otherwise, is Billie's voice. The program presents new versions of songs from her usual repertoire, but also a few rarities, such a 1948 Los Angeles reading of her classic but not so often recorded “Strange Fruit” (that program also includes the rarely heard “Maybe You'll Be There”), and a 1949 version throughout and sound quality is quite good considering the rarity of these documents. An amazing discovery.
