I believe a large part of the reason you don't hear the percussionists (and guitarist Larry Lee) is because Eddie Kramer either was directed by Hendrix's management (most likely) or Hendrix or took it upon himself not to "mic" them properly. I've heard rehearsal/jam mateiral of Gypsy Sun and Rainbow from this period that even in mono portable recording equipment sound the balance is better and all are heard. I wish this band had been allowed the time to gel and go forward.

I have the Nichols on the way to me to compare. I bet I prefer it. I was checkout out my 'nineties cd player to give to my brother when his started acting up (he decided to buy a blu-ray player instead) and spun a few of these and didn't prefer them to an earlier copy (used The Chase and Historically Speaking) was sort of a wash, but they shine mightily on my new Transport/DAC combo. I've found that to be true of many new cds: they don't sound as good on the older players as the newer ones. For whatever reason. Anyway, I agree about Porgy and Bess, that Bethlehem version has some nice tracks but overall "meh."

I have. The new ones are better in my opinion, more tonally accurate and more lively sounding. I don't have any of the very recent Toshiba ones, I have a lot of the first batch of Toshibas, and all the American (including very early cds). I like these Japanese ones best of ALL. They are perhaps a BIT loud for some purists but they are not squashed dynamically, plenty of nuance in that regard and you can get some decent volume without mishap. I've been collecting them and have about 85 percent of them.

One of my brothers and his wife LOVE Justified. I haven't really been able to get into it yet, but I'll try again. I have the first two seasons on DVD (a gift). I just watched the debut of Killer Women. A waste of time. The only reason I really watched it was the first episode was filmed in Austin and it's fun to see a show with scenes in places you've been to.

The Hackett is not for everyone! I like it but I'm not crazy about some of it. Sound is very good.

The Nina Simone is very good, her first and probably her best release. (Ducks under chair). I went out of my way to get the two Ellingtons and the three Mingus. They sound amazing in their newest incarnations.

Lots of good ones. If you like the artist, you're likely to really enjoy the Bethlehem in the new series, US or Japan.

Right, I left off Candid recordings which I would put before Atlantic and Impulse, but that's ME and anyone else may have different label priorities. But they're all recordings i pull out and listen to. Two of the Impulse are available on SACD from Analogue Productions, and they are well worth checking out.

I agree, they are all good sets. I guess I would go with the OLDEST, or contact Mosaic and ask which they anticipate would be the first of these to sell out. As Hans notes, the Chu is on last chance, should grab that one first.

I don't wear 501s as often now due to the evolution of my waist line from 1980 through 2014. In the 'eighties they were all I wore if I had a choice.

Sorry to hear about the slow down, and I understand not knowing precisely where to start. I will tell you though that these sets are WONDERFUL. Anyone who loves the RCA set would love both these.

Interesting recommendations. I personally prefer the Debut and Bethlehem and Columbia and Jazz Workshop to Atlantic and Impulse, but I really like it ALL.

Hell, that new Debut box may be a good place to start as well. Some excellent music in there. There are many ways to get started with Mingus. . . . If he hasn't stuck before, well maybe he will this time.

Watched Boardwalk Empire first season on Blu. Was interesting. I had a hard time with it at first as I really didn't like any of the characters. Nicely done production though. Will continue on to Season 2.

I'm not sure exactly how seriously Lateef took this stuff. I don't really know of any other musician who did. . . .

Mike, I've compared one disc to the set, and the Mosaic sounded better. Mosaic didn't turn the Decca sides into audiophile wonderment, but they sound a bit livelier.

And to mine as well. I need to spend more time with that set, but I'm very happy with the sound.

I just realized that the back cover of my "Bark" LP by the Airplane has all the song and personnel info very nicely printed on the back cover, and I did that nearly forty years ago. But didn't remember that I had.
