A little bit of reverb is okay, my system sorts it out well enough. I mainly want this because I wanted it so bad before it was releaed and after. The US set is probably the better for listening, we'll see though, Japanese Sony cds of this vintage had some excellent mastering. I won't count this as a bird in hand til it ships, and it's okay, I have the American set since it's release day and can enjoy over and over.

Yes, the were about five tracks that tenor, trumpet or piano solos were edited from and in one instance a bit of ensemble playing edited. Also apparently there's a difference in "fades" and song intros and ending with the Japanese version containing slightly more audience sound at the beginning or end. Also the mastering was done from different sources and different engineers, the Japanese using the tapes sent to them years before from which their initial two lp releases were made. Listeners seem to feel that a bit of reverb was added to the Japanese version.

I went for it. This is (according to the description) the Japanese set that was released before the US set, and was produced by Teo Macero, not Michael Cuscuna. I tried very hard to get this when it was first released, and never could. So if this is what it is I want it. Does not feature many if any of the restored edits that were in the US edition and is different mastering. We'll see if someone beat me to it. Thanks for the headsup.

Well me too. But I prefer the material on Shadows and Light, and prefer to hear that material in studio form with those cats and arrangements. I'll pull these out one of these days and revisit them. Right now I'm on an Ed Motta kick!

It's the latter, the personnel doesn't thrill me as much on these live recordings, nor the way they've stretched the material. It's not bad at all, but I don't prefer it. And there is so much to listen to!

Allen, they were great with Klook too. He wasn't really around long enough to see if he would have developed the drum chair in the same way as Connie as John and Milt developed the sound and scope of the Quartet.

That's cool. I've listened dozens of times over the decades. May still grow on me, stranger things have happened.

Glad you got your 2 cd copy! I need to revisit this material at some point, but I bought this one and Miles of Aisles way back when they were first released on vinyl and they have never quite grabbed me the way that Hejira, Don Juan's Reckless Daughter and Mingus have. Those are the three that I grab for when I think of Joni. A lot may have to do with me and my life at that time, these really grabbed me then, and still do now.

Sorry to bump this old thread; obsessed with Coltrane at the moment and thoroughly enjoying reading through old threads. Anyway, i cannot believe these sets were available so cheap on release. Must be up there with the deals of the century. Well, they weren't exorbitant on release, but they weren't THAT cheap. That is the cut-out pricing.

I believe a large part of the reason you don't hear the percussionists (and guitarist Larry Lee) is because Eddie Kramer either was directed by Hendrix's management (most likely) or Hendrix or took it upon himself not to "mic" them properly. I've heard rehearsal/jam mateiral of Gypsy Sun and Rainbow from this period that even in mono portable recording equipment sound the balance is better and all are heard. I wish this band had been allowed the time to gel and go forward.

The Joe Caroll is fun, I like it. I like him with Diz.

I have the Nichols on the way to me to compare. I bet I prefer it. I was checkout out my 'nineties cd player to give to my brother when his started acting up (he decided to buy a blu-ray player instead) and spun a few of these and didn't prefer them to an earlier copy (used The Chase and Historically Speaking) was sort of a wash, but they shine mightily on my new Transport/DAC combo. I've found that to be true of many new cds: they don't sound as good on the older players as the newer ones. For whatever reason. Anyway, I agree about Porgy and Bess, that Bethlehem version has some nice tracks but overall "meh."

I agree, that is my favorite YAL release.
