Many many happy returns James!

I couldn't handle Hannibal, too bleak and freak show for me. (Wouldn't put it up there with Sopranos in my case, nor is Sopranos a pinnacle of TV for me, I liked it a lot, but there were aspects I really disliked). Finishing up watching Season 5 part 1 of Breaking Bad on blu-ray (I watched all episodes on broadcast as well). Four is still my favorite season but this one is next best.

"next to last"--- if people really used it as it means, it would hardly ever get used!

Ideally I like to sit and concentrate on listening, and I have built a really nice (imo) system to enjoy. But my life is not allowing much of that now. I never listen on the computer. I just don't like digital files and using the computer as a music source. These days I listen to classical music on the radio a lot more often than I have ever listened to the radio period, because my Dad likes that, and it is nice to have in the background.

I finally surrendered to the allure of the Sopranos last year and watched all the seasons. I didn't fall head over heels for the show but do see what the fuss was about. As Guy indicates, it got there first before some other shows that did build on the Sopranos. I liked some of the actors and guest stars.

Well I wish I could say I'm as happy as a chipmunk in a bird feeder (watched one this morning) but. . . I don't want this to turn into a thread about my dramatic life, so I'll just say my folks, especially my Dad, need attention around the clock and at the moment it's me, at their house 12 hours or so a day, feeding them, getting them about the house, helping explain their confusions away, etc. It's a lot of work, and it is seven days a week and it's wearing me down. Back to Gandofini's thread.

Thanks. Over 5 and a half years ago, from Lymphoma and MDS, after two bone marrow transplants. Sigh. She was a wonderful woman. And I feel so sorry for her parents. Her youngest brother (there is one other sibling, a brother, between them) died of lung cancer last month at 53. They've lost two of their three children. I can only imagine, they're good people who shouldn't have to go through that. . .twice.

I know, my wife died at 52, it just seems like a rip. RIP James.

I think it means that he is a very strong icon for many of what Blue Note Records was during a very productive time. I don't think anyone here thinks that Hank Mobley alone, or as part of a small list of musicians, DEFINES the Blue Note legacy, just that he is as definitive a Blue Note recording artist as there ever was. Penultimate, according to my dictionary means 'next to last', obviously he wasn't next to last chronologically so what did it mean? I agree that he could be regarded as a definitive Blue Note artist, and there are a lot of Blue Note fans about, me included. I have tons of Hank's albums both as a leader and as a sideman in my collection and he never lets us down. I was just puzzled by use of the word 'penultimate'. Perhaps "consummate" may have been meant.

Alas, poor grey, I miss him and his contributions. RIP my friend.

Check out 'Thinking of Home." Or "Third Season" or. . . well check some out, hard to go wrong.

Thanks for your kind words, jazzbo. But may I humbly point out that I have no track record at all in educating (not in the literal sense of the word anyway and I am in no position to "educate" others here either . So I cannot take any credit in that field. And I am the first to admit that the more I read on this board the more I realize there is more and more I am not familiar with yet, even in my favorite fields of the music. As for the rest, I've tried to clarify my point so I rest my case. Let's just say THAT page is turned now for me, so "to each his own" (courtesy of Livingston/Evans ). Sorry, I could have sworn that I read that you gave some lessons. None-the-less your value is not diminished. Carry on!

Indeed, that was my first thought when I saw the first post! I listen to Blue Note material less and less, but I do still reach for Mobley dates; of the 'mid to late fifties and sixties dates, I listen mostly to Mobley, Hutcherson and Hill dates these days. Mobley was a great player, and he lived the life. It's a wonderful thing we have so many recordings to savor.

Well, I've been on this board long enough to a) develop a thicker skin and only continuous baiters really get to me and b) not interpret this quite as you did. Whatever. Big Beat Steve is one of the most valuable posters here imo, and one with as big or bigger an experience and history of appreciating music, supporting live events, and educating. I support you both and wish you the best in your sale of this material.

I don't they've ever been a very good investment item, and I agree with bbr, they're fetching less, perhaps a bit more than that, but less than before. It's been a recession and I've noticed that to be the case with many items, both on ebay or off. I think ebay is about as good a place as any to sell, personally. It's certainly where many customers look.

Oh I agree, it's hard to pay big dollars for these things and i only do when there's no choice and it's something I really want. I just thought that these were well-done as far as DVD-R sets go, in my opinion.
-
I guess this more for the CD-R thread, but apparently quite a few of these old series (Gildersleeve and the old mysteries, Philo Vance, Nick Carter, etc.) are badly burned DVD-Rs that Amazon is producing themselves. So buyer beware... I've bought two series from amazon that were on DVD-R (Crash Season 2 and The Killing Season 2) and they were expertly burned and I have no complaints as far as that goes.

Great news on the Montgomery! Thanks for sharing.

This thread made me dig out my Standards I and watch it. That was nice. Now I'm waiting for the Keith Jarrett Story film, starring Bryan Cranston.

Yes, I've mentioned in post #10 that I could use more discs like "Changeless."
