  1. Reviewers seem to believe that the music serves as an homage to the adventurous spirit of Bird and his music, which I can see. I haven't seen anything from Lewis himself with an explanation, but it may be out there.
  2. I agree with Jon (and Allen and Freelancer): worth picking up both for Green and besides Green.
  3. Not the real original cover. I'm familiar with the other cover. This above is the cover of the lp I own and spin. I have two cds with two different covers, one much like the original (Red Baron) one a new cover (expanded Stioryville, recommended). Right now
  4. This reminds me to put Kogun on again soon. Right now, one of my favorite Pee Wee Russell lps. (AKA Portrait of Pee Wee). Love it.
  5. Rich, glorious mono! Agreed, I just happened on Miles Davis at Fillmore right after Bitches Brew when I returned from Swaziland in '71 and it fascinated the living daylights out of me, this music is part of my inner musical language. Just love the chaotic moments, the beautiful moments, it's all very exciting. I love the whole outuput from the start of the electric peiriod to '75, but this one, Filles and Bitches Brew are my most often played.
  6. I love that ring modulation messiness!
  7. More of that loony looking imagery. I wish he'd outgrow that. Maybe one day.
  8. Many happy happy returns John!
  9. Hope it arrives today!
  10. You've done your good deed for the week!
  11. Some improvement to my ears over both the Ulysee cds and the more recent bootleg release. Better recorded than some of the other dates, but not a fantastic recording. But the music can be heard and as you say it's great music. Edited to add: Listening to this again and I actually like the recording, the ensemble is well-represented and soloists are clear, it's mono but it's not bad at all.
  12. How about It Club and Jazz Workshop. . . .
  13. On to another old favorite.
  14. Wonder how many times I've looked at Marguerite's face and smiled. I've had this two lp set a long time!
  15. An illustration by Karen Fredericks, art direction by Nancy Gilman.
  16. Yes, but to my ears both the Town Hall and Amsterdam are improved over previous releases, I guess I hear a bit more improvement to the Town Hall than you have. I like all this material. I want more . . . come on Sue and Michael.
  17. No, there is a booklet that just has general notes about all the releases, no individual notes that came with the previous reissues. I can't seem to stop myself from buying things over again. The notes aren't such a big deal to me these days, and I like having the boxes with the recordings together rather than separate cds, so I've bought these (priced very nicely) and given away the other reissues to friends and relatives.
  18. Nice move on Lubinsky's part. Right now,
  19. Have a wonderful day and many happy returns Brooks!
  20. Amen. Pete is a wonderful person to deal with.
