  1. Just ordered the Deadwood blu-ray set (was pretty well-priced on amazon); haven't seen it but always wanted to and had some Xmas money. I did see those "Bad Santa" episodes of American Horror Story: Asylum. That show is off the hook!
  2. Refreshingly, I've watched nothing of a video nature at all since Wednesday night except the disappoinitng Fringe episode.
  3. I'm giving my trumpet-playing 19 year old nephew Graham Armstrong six Mingus discs as his Christmas present. It will be interesting to learn his impressions. He mostly knows contemporary jazz.
  4. Have a regular Pepsi! And many happy returns of the day!
  5. Many many happy returns!
  6. I like the Elric stories best; I also like his non-sicence fiction historical novels and fantasies. Now "Conversations with Henry Miller," edited by Frank L. Kersnowski and Alice Hughes
  7. Hope it's a great one David!
  8. My favorite is the Mingus release. Get it! I'd also recommend the Allen Eager. And the Dodo Marmoroso.
  9. Glad you're back home!
  10. Love Simenon! Was just looking at a few Maigret titles in the book store today and couldn't decipher whether I'd already read them!
  11. Hey Trev is a big boy! He was asking about the early material. . . he can take it in its best sonic form.
  12. Or if they'd actually wear the right prescription Chandler glasses.
  13. I used to own the he 2 lp Ulysse/East Coasting 2 LP set, but several minutes of a Mingus solo were excised to fit it onto LP. The Mosaic set restores it. Actually I think it was less than thirty seconds removed.
  14. Welcome Cactus Bob! (I'm Lonson on that other forum). Keep playing this one because it just sounds so damned good. My new phono preamp is really surprising me.
  15. John, I agree it's hard to do so, and I did say "to me." But I'm agreeing with your points, he was in the tradition, and his was a revolutionary change, not just taking license with the forms of the day. It doesn't matter at this point, he was a titan in jazz and is still relevant.
  16. Well, I think Ornette had earned his wings, and I don't really consider his new conception taking "license." And I personally think book learning is a bit overrated. Especially by the book learned and teaching. (No offense meant!) Anyway, just the way I hear it, but I don't have the personal experience that Herb Geller did.
  17. Okay, but playing music and knowing chords and music theory are two different things. In my musical adventures I've known both musicians who did and didn't, and neither group had an advantage in plyaing the hell out of their instruments or knowing the music genre they were passionate about.
  18. Continuing on with this one. Like all the Hendrix vinyl I've heard from Legacy (and I've heard it all but the Berkley) it sounds excellent. Good to know. I sold most of my MCA's(except purple box). Loved the packaging, but not sound. Have this one and a few other Legacy's in my cart on Amazon. I just sprang for a German pressed Beatles stereo vinyl box (which I think is great...better than my MOFI's). Need to get this one, Winterland and the Beatles mono box, too. I would be surprised if you're not happy with them. I only have originals of the albums released through the 'seventies otherwise, none of the MCA vinyl. Steering clear of Beatles vinyl, I've the new cd reissues and I"m not the biggest of Beatles fans.
  19. Received my last batch Friday. Enjoying them immensely!
  20. Maybe it's from a later time period's perspective, but for me the Contemporary recordings don't hide the fact that Ornette was fluent enough in the jazz that came before him. I'm not sure he "gained" enough respect. . . but it was clear he could play.
  21. I've only heard the JSP set once and it was okay. My go to for that period of Bird is the Savoy/Atlantic complete box set. I feel this is very good mastering from the best sources, and of course the music is absolutely bedrock stuff.
  22. I have that set and have spent years slowly savoring it. Get Smart was a cool show. . . but a little dab does me!
  23. Continuing on with this one. Like all the Hendrix vinyl I've heard from Legacy (and I've heard it all but the Berkley) it sounds excellent.
