I haven't heard it, but I bet it's a clone of the Boplicity or the Japanese cd, and probably the Japanese Bethlehem cd of Dusty Blue.

Looking for Charlie Christian suggestions
jazzbo replied to Face of the Bass's topic in Recommendations
I'd say if FTB has the itms he has (Columbia box and the Minton's) I don't think he needs the JSP box. The Columbia I believe has that rehearsal material. I have the Columbia box, several different versions of the Minton's material, and all nine volumes of the Masters of Jazz series (I'm fortunate). I don't think there is any more than that. I listen to those nine volumes more than the others. -

Coltrane Live at the Sutherland Lounge 1961
jazzbo replied to ghost of miles's topic in New Releases
No, I believe UK. -
They're sourced (my best guess) from other bootleg cds, and as such the sound varies. They don't sound as good as the commercial, official recordings imo. But they're not HORRIBLE. I've listened to these many times over the years. Admittedly I may be less fussy than some. . . .

He did a good job on a Fox show the last few years as well (The Finder). RIP Micheal.

I disagree with this as well. And in general, I don't think any of these recordings in question are mistaken as bootlegs. They are bootlegs.

Congrats SS. I remember those days. I'm 22 years without a cigarette. Amazes me.

Last night's "first half of the final season" ending of Breaking Bad. Best episode of the season. Less cartoonish, consolidated the whole season and once again took us in an unexpected direction. Again this could have been a series ending, until the final scene. I love how the dangling bit of the book has turned into the catalyst of his downfall. Hank had to keep the book on hand because it bolstered him up, Gayle's dedication made him feel important as a chemist "artiste." And that has proven to begin his downfall. And we saw the CT "scanning". . . this could be a sign that the cancer has returned, or not. Like that extra bit of suspense added. Oh, and FINALLY they use "Crystal Blue Persuasion" -- a friend of mine has been waiting four seasons for this. Now the long wait begins for the final eight.

Are there any box bargains currently available?
jazzbo replied to GA Russell's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Well, there continue to be higher priced Mosaic Shaw sets for sale on ebay and elsewhere, which made this one a "bargain" price. I think it's priced nicely and the others are off base. I know all about the Pop Market set, I have it AND the Mosaic. There are reasons to have a Mosaic despite the new set, especially if you're a fan of the Mosaic "method." -
Sons of Anarchy, Season 4 on Blu-ray.

Thanks for the heads up. -
All discs have been mailed.

I've seen that photo, this is Grant Green. (Also, I have no doubt that Uptown would not use this photo if it weren't). A Strat then and now is less expensive for an up and coming musician to purchase than the guitars Green was later using.

The teacher I would most wish to honor is Michael Stern, OBE, who was the founder and headmaster of the United World school Waterford Kamhlaba in M'Babane, Swaziland. Stern had sought to open a multi-racial school in the Republic of South Africa and had been forced to open it in Swaziland instead, and he built a true melting-pot, and a school that has endured as possibly the very best on the continent for four decades and more. His heart and soul were in education and improvement, and his organizational and motivational skills were excellent. His ideas and his example have meant much to my life. Plus he accomplished a very difficult task in my opinion: he brought me up to speed in Latin when I walked into the school with no Latin learning and into his Latin class, that was starting the third year. He was far more than a great Latin teacher, but I'll always remember sweating bullets when the headmaster stood me up in class on the third day and said that in three months I would be caught up with the rest of the students. Little did I know that in six months I'd be head of the class. A great man who I am sure is missed. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michael_Stern_%28educator%29

I hear you. Thanks to Spotify I can take a careful approach. It seems that all the titles are already on Spotify, whether or not the CDs have yet been released. Whether I can get past the things I don't warm to - the 'humor' I don't share and the jazz rockery which I find a little mechanical - remains to be seen. Give the music more time. There's so much depth and brilliance to be found. Don't let the lyrics distract you. Hardly anybody mentions the all of the beautiful melodies FZ wrote. And the rhythm sections are top shelf. Never mechanical. Actually it's the rhythm sections that bug me most. As a drummer, his drummers played in styles I like the least. I listened to Zappa through the 'seventies and into the early 'eighties and then I just stopped. And I'm good with that.
