  1. I like the choice of cello on this recording. Allows for a more flexible tonal palette for the music than just a bass would. And this is well taken advantage of! The blues colors of this session make it very accessible and also helps to give it a more focused emotional expression.
  2. Many many happy returns Guy!

I like it. More traditional than A New Perspective, a different album, by design. It's not great, but it does stand up to some repeat listens. When you're in the mood, it works.

In my opinion John there's nothing false about Jim's "street-wise" talk if you want to categorize it as such. A man who has spent more than two decades being a musician as his only employment, and has been a participant and co-producer of several cds, had his liner notes published. . . yeah, that's street cred in the music world to me. And I've been in the same room with him several times, and exchanged more words with him outside this board than on it, and I'll attest to his, what I consider, myself, brilliance. Just had to say it because the personal attacks are getting heavy and in this case unfounded.
  6. Many many happy returns!
  7. I bet this set does well. I think Hawkins is a big draw, this material in Mosaic sound and annotation is a very attractive set for collectors. I'll bet a number are sold by Xmas.
  8. A mistaken pricing, but maybe it will go through? The new Howlin' Wolf box set for 25. http://www.ccmusic.com/item.cfm?itemid=HIPD762734
  9. Okay, I'll check that out one of these days when I root the other one out of the cd collection.I know previously it sounded very fake stereo to me, but I may be confusing it with another of the bootlegs from this tour. Very happy with the sound of this new version.
  10. Phooey! (I think I'n one of the only people who almost always prefers stereo when it's available.) I haven't done a comparison, but I always thought the bootleg was fake stereo. I'll try to find it and compare soon. Personally, I'm bowled over at the sound on this set. Excellent.

    Amps

You could look at tube amps at about 25 watts per channel then.

Vol.2 = the bonus tracks on Introducing the Three Sounds US cd.
  13. Many many happy returns!
  14. I bought all of these on lp when they came out. If I could only keep one, it would be Star People.

    Amps

I can understand that. I've had their amps since 1987 with no need for support at all from them. The only product that I had from them that needed repair was not an amp. I know you're not looking for High End. Decware is not High End. But. . . in my opinion to get the kind of sound you've enjoyed for so long these days you have to look at independent builders and the higher end manufacturers. Or rebuild/refurbish vintage units. Just my tuppence.

    Amps

That may be the best thing to do. Very little mass-produced today is worth the money you'll spend on it, especially in the higher limits of big audio companies. I lucked into using Decware amplification years ago and I'd recommend their products, especially if you were here in the States, though they've a number of UK users as well and most of their equipment can be shipped from the factory ready to plug in. These are hand-built with premium parts, no circuit boards, point-to-point soldered and star grounded, very robust designs with clear and powerful sound. Decware High Fidelity
  17. I skipped this 2-on-1 because I have excellent sounding Japanese cds of these two, but agree: this is great music, and it's a real shame that neither of these two Marion Brown recordings has been on cd in the States before.
  18. Many many happy happy returns!
  19. Definitely check out the Burton on RCA and ECM. I remember when I first bought that Jarrett and Burton on Atlantic shortly after it had come out I played it to death. It was a great album to take a few tokes to. I love Sam Brown's Tele sound on that one. And his playing. That combination of Jarrett and Burton had a unique texture to it. The arrangements and the compositions were nicely woven together as well. Pretty "one of a kind" lp, sort of in the way I think Filles de Kilamanjaro" is one of a kind.
  20. She's very charismatic. And if I were forty years younger. . . I wish her lots of success. Or maybe not, I wish her as much as she wants and as much as is safe. Re-watched that two hour Nova last night with my friend Dave. Man that was a well put together program! Today I'll go back ton watching Season Four of Chuck.
  21. I will not hold my breath. They "solved" the error in the Getz box by offering an mp3 download. Well, took time but I got an email response from a Universal dude. He says to write him back "in about a month" for a replacement disc. We'll see. If there is one available, I'll update this thread.
  22. Hey, she founded Blue Note Records too!
  23. Some great guitars. I've a MIM Thinline that is a very nice guitar, but I don't get the sound I want from it. I know what you mean about the time to sell. I've lots of time on my hands, I should utilize it. Brooks, sounds like a decent price for a nice guitar!
  24. Several have mentioned upstream in this thread that they bite.
