  1. Wish I had one to sell you! The only Strat I have to part with is a nonfactory one built with a walnut body, a quilted maple top added, and a telecaster neck.
  2. Yes, can't wait. Been wanting to see Ornette since the last time he was here in Austin!
  3. Have a great day, and many many more happy returns!
  4. Use a disc that you know very well and have heard on several systems over the years. That's a good way to sort of help you make educated guesses of what the system may sound like in your home if you can't preview it there. I'm lucky in that I have recordings of two bands I was in, recorded by me in my then garage apartment to two track (analog). I know the room, the players, the instruments, the nature of the mikes and the tape deck, and have listened to these recordings on many systems. These really help me evaluate the sound of a system.
  5. Looks interesting. http://www.systemrecords.co.uk/reinhardt-django-musette-maestro-1928-1937-p-1051188.html http://www.elderly.com/recordings/items/JSP-CD966.htm JETman pointed out to me that this was released on Tuesday.
  6. Joe, I think the answer is yes. I remember reading about Chicago (the band) quad recordings on DVD. I remember from my limited experience in the 'seventies that quad lps sounded pretty much like their stereo versions when played on a stereo rig.
  7. Khepera is one of the first records where Randy let Alex Blake LOOSE and he doesn't pull out any stops. A very interesting album recorded in a sort of "rock" way. Earth Birth is an orchestral album with some great Liston arrangements and Billy Higgins in the drum chair. If that sounds like you'd like it, you will. I agree with Jim. Weston's work is pretty damned consistent, and I'm a big fan.
  8. It's always great to get Mr. Cuscuna talking about Mr. Lion. Hardly anyone knows more about the man, and there really ought to be a comprehensive biography. I was lucky enough to get him talking about Lion and the origins of Blue Note quite a few years back and get a few facts out there not available before.
  9. Many happy returns Rolf!
  10. I agree, both hands are great! I believe the remaining tracks from that session were released on a cd called "Modern Jazz Piano," a nearly complete reissue of a Savoy/Arista (?) two lp set.
  11. It's really hard to tell what this show is like from commercials, etc. Apparently it's pretty well researched as far as the background for biker gangs, their structure and nature. One of the actors is even from "the life." Its success for me is that it has become a rather interesting soap opera about family ties, loyalty, leadership and preserving or rejecting a way of life. The recent storyline is an exciting one where the gang arrives in Ireland to harvest the crop of tears and blood grown from their gun-running association with the IRA. All precipitated by the abduction of the grandson of the founding father of the gang. This has been the best season so far for me, and the only one I've watched during the broadcast season.
  12. Changed mine today. My siblings and I in front of our new home in Addis Ababa, 1966. I'm the tall one.
  13. It's a family drama. I'm not kidding. I wish it were more about motorcycling. It's about a gun-smuggling (though they'll soon have to develop another livelihood) band of thugs that pretend to be motorcycle enthusiasts protecting a charming little town named Charming. I really tried avoiding the show for a long time, but a friend kept urging me to watch it and it's fun to talk about to with others. Not essential watching, but it gets better as seasons go by and the family drama deepens. And the cast are actually getting better at riding bikes. It's interesting how the style of Dyna Glide (mostly) and other Harley Davidson bike customization used on the show has become really hip for modifiying bikes the last few years. Ron Perlman and Katey Segal are not too shabby on this show. And there have been a few interesting guest stars such as Steven King.
  14. I gave up on The Event. I might watch it on disc when it comes out, maybe not. Watched last night's Sons of Anarchy.
  15. This is an EXCELLENT box set. There's a good deal, 55 bucks, from an amazon seller here, and possibly better deal through amazon.uk, amazon.fr or amazon.de http://www.amazon.com/Black-Saint-Soul-George-Russell/dp/B003QM1ANU/ref=sr_1_1?s=music&ie=UTF8&qid=1289401757&sr=1-1 \\ The mastering on this set is as good as the Hathaway. Previous issues of either set's material never sounded this good.
  16. Not jazz, but unlike the Desmond, an official release and a great price from an amazon seller, 22 bucks. Excellent remastering, and fantastic music. Complete Donny Hathaway Atlantic And this upcoming set is a helluva deal for the amount of discs. Even Clem sort of approves. Leonard Bernstein Sony collected Symphony recordings
  17. Lester Young did a few versions on Verve worth hearing. In fact it was one of the very last he recorded, which seems appropriate as there never will be another Pres.
  18. I guess I will always be a fan of some good ole spiritual mumbo jumbo. . . I really like Lost. And Fringe. Finished watching Chuck, Season Three. Just about to turn on The Good Wife.
  19. A shame Atlantic didn't do that back during the CD era. This performance isn't even bootlegged. I bet the tapes are lost.
  20. The way most people operate buying on ebay. . . it hardly makes sense to make a bid before the final minute!
  21. I know that people rag on the Gateway sequels, but I think they're quite good.
  22. Many many happy happy returns!
  23. Enjoy, and many many happy returns!
  24. Many happy happy returns! May this be the best year yet!
