  1. I love Ellington Indigos as well. I'd love to see a deluxe treatment of this one. Of course we won't.
  2. I'd say if the samples don't tempt you pass it by. It's jazzier than the Lee/Christy in my opinion, but that may not be enough.
  3. Yeah. . .I confess that the lyrics that mean the most to me are. . . Pigpen's.
  4. Well, I do love Keith! A big reason I like this one is that the band and I seem to have been listening to similar things at that time, and when I picked the lp up when it was issued (and I remember how heavy it was!) I was just in tune with their ideas. It's my favorite, but my other three lp favorites would probably look just like yours. Although I might sneak Blues for Allah in there.
  5. I'm not really that interested in either of those singers, and their work has been pretty well represented on cd. If Mosaic could find a large chunk of their music not on cd yet, yeah, that's a good project. Possibly sell. Would raise a lot of eyebrows of non-vocal jazz Mosaic buyers though, as this Crosby set does.
  6. The Gryce/Monk and Nichols material is on opposing sides of SJL 1166, a 1986 Savoy reissue on LP. Thanks kh. I've never seen that one, and didn't find it listed discographically.
  7. It hasn't been that long pardnuh.
  8. I like it too. There's little Evans I don't.
  9. From Wikipedia In processing electronic audio signals, pre-emphasis refers to a system process designed to increase, within a band of frequencies, the magnitude of some (usually higher) frequencies with respect to the magnitude of other (usually lower) frequencies in order to improve the overall signal-to-noise ratio by minimizing the adverse effects of such phenomena as attenuation distortion or saturation of recording media in subsequent parts of the system. That is the mirror of the deemphasis. The whole system is called emphasis. The frequency curve is decided by special time constants. The cutoff frequency can be calculated from that value. Pre-emphasis is commonly used in telecommunications, digital audio recording, record cutting, in FM broadcasting transmissions, and in displaying the spectrograms of speech signals. An example of this is the RIAA equalization curve on 33 rpm and 45 rpm vinyl records. In high speed digital transmission, pre-emphasis is used to improve signal quality at the output of a data transmission. In transmitting signals at high data rates, the transmission medium may introduce distortions, so pre-emphasis is used to distort the transmitted signal to correct for this distortion. When done properly this produces a received signal which more closely resembles the original or desired signal, allowing the use of higher frequencies or producing fewer bit errors.
  10. I know that Flurin and I were discussing the availability of the Bill Evans Album on Columbia on cd in recent months, but I haven't located the thread though I tried. Just wanted to mention that I've discovered this has been reissued in Europe on a CBS/Columbia cd, and it's nice too have it in print again.
  11. The Nichols material was released on Hi-Lo 78 and LP * Various Artists - I Just Love Jazz Piano - Down And Out (Savoy MG 12100) * Herbie Nichols - Who's Blues c/w 'S Wonderful (Hi-Lo 1403) * Chocolate Williams - Lady Ginger Snaps c/w Good Story Blues (Hi-Lo 1402) * Various Artists - The Modern Keyboard Album (2 LP) (Savoy SJL 2247) I'm not sure it was ever on lp together with the Gryce material, though it may well have been. I have it on cd on "I Just Love Jazz Piano" and "The Modern Keyboard Album."
  12. Is this Signals? The Monk/Gryce material showed up on these three lps I believe (in this order): * Gigi Gryce Quartet And Orchestra (Signal S 1201) * Gigi Gryce - Nica's Tempo (Savoy MG 12137) * Gigi Gryce/Duke Jordan/Hall Overton - Signals (Savoy SJL 2231) I have it on cd on "Nica's Tempo."
  13. I've passed on this compilation. . . . If it had all the material it would of course have been more expensive, but more attractive to me. I have all the material in the last two complete Decca and Commodore forms and will stay with that. The music is fantastic, in my opinion. The price is standard for Hip-0-Select. They're pricey, but they're limited editions with deluxe (so to speak) packaging. I would wager, judging by quite a few other editions I have from them, that the sound and the notes will "justify" the price to an extent. It's also "collectible" in ways that previous releases of the material may not be.
  14. Aric, check it out: Details of the Private Collection
  15. Interesting, though these don't seem to be the type of releases most of us WISH they were preparing. Here's hoping they can make a move towards their former style, perhaps picking up where they left off on artists.
  16. Good lord. . . . My favorites would be 78 material to be honest. Of lps. . . . Piano in the Foreground Afro Bossa Private Collection Vol. 4
  17. Watching the dvd that came with this two cd set. What a woman!
  18. I wonder what a late sixties or early seventies Procol Harum Xmas lp would be like? I'd buy a Tania Maria Xmas lp. Or an Ed Motta!
  19. Those are great Ellington albums, you'll enjoy them. I've bought the McLaughlin and Weather Report boxes. I had earlier cd copies of most of the Weather Report, and none of the McLaughlin (old vinyl copies though). Great value.
  20. Yet another reason to than Phil Schaap (I'm not one of his detractors). I love that photograph mentioned in the closing paragraph.
  21. Jon, so true!
  22. Sorry I missed that you ordered Richmond Rareties. It's a great label. I just finished playing the Sam Manning discs, which blow me away. Love that stuff.
  23. Be sure to check out the Jazz Oracle label. Their transfers always sound the best to me, and their booklets are so thick that you can hardly get them in the case, and it's not just empty filler, they're chock full of history. My favorite reissue label for early jazz and hot dance, and they have rescued many sides from oblivion. I can recommend each issue for their unique values.
  24. Updated. One removed, two added.
