  1. It is fun stuff. The arranging is very clever. They totally capture the Bix and Tram small group sounds on songs they never had the opportunity to play, and the players really deliver the spirit.
  2. My favorite download of the last few months has been "If Bix played Gershwin" which is not a recreation but a very smart imagining. Very good stuff!
  3. I have that problem. I have used "binders" that hold 100 to 200 discs to hold cdrs of live material, lp burns etc. that have little "paperwork" associated with them and this DOES save space. I've also used "maxislim" cases whenver possible for the above discs or other discs with little paperwork, box set discs with silly disc packaging etc. I also use four-five-six cd "big case" cases to hold related discs in the categories above together. And last but not LEAST I use snap in 2 cd jewel case centers to combine discs by the same artist (for example, I'd combine "The Prisoner" and "Speak like a Child" RVGs in one case using these centers. THAT has really helped with space issues. Cheaper than new bookcases and without the need to find a "footprint" for a new bookcase.

    Miles

I think we would be absolutely stunned by what Bird might have recorded in the seventies. . . it's such a shame his appetites led to early destruction. Even at the end he was "moving" towards new frontiers. Miles' passing hit me in one of the happiest periods of my life, newly married and productive. . . . It seemed sad but not too terribly much as I felt he had had SUCH A LIFE!
  5. Yes, and I guess what I got out of this as a "moral message" is: these type of people, and the successful 'agency' staff in the film, are the "winners." A sad lump of medicine to swallow. . .amid the belly laughs.
  6. Just finished a collection of all the Jirel of Joirey stories by C. L. Moore, called Black God's Kiss, published by the nice new Planet Stories press. Now reading a nice overview collection of essays called "Ancient Egyptian Civilization" edited by Brenda Stalcup for Greenhaven Press.
  7. These were available on cd in the US, long deleted. Also have been available in a very nice lp facilmile edition (with additional tracks not on the original releases) from Japan, and in a jewel case version from Japan.
  8. Ummm. . ..Mark, Al, it was pretty clear to ME that the Clooney character could have had an affair with almost ANY woman. . . he was after . . . one thing.
  9. I've replaced the BN box with RVGs and one TOCJ of the Roost material. I prefer the sound this way. I love the Verve box. . . I bought it the day it was released and it's one of the box sets they got right.
  10. I don't have to worry about "competition". . . I have been able to buy every set I've wanted, and one's I didn't want at first, easily; I preorder often. I guess I can see someone wanting all the original artwork, but it's not a concern of mine, I enjoy the music and I don't enjoy the "object" that much. To raise a point: in the case of most Mosaic releases, the material chosen and compiled to be reissued is NOT sitting in the racks of music stores. (Hell, how much jazz is actually sitting in music store racks these days anyway?) Most of this material in this set for example is NOT out on cd and available for sale at this time. And personally I feel this is among the very best of OP's work . . . .wonderful, heartfelt stuff, great work from all players. As for the aesthetics. . . and incompletion. . .again I think this comes from a vinyl-only perspective. I grew up on vinyl, moved to cds because unless you live in one of the huge cities the choices on cd are much more comprehensive. And I don't feel that there is anything incomplete about Mosaics; the original art is not a part of the musical experience for me, the original art rarely had anything to do with the musicians and their work, and the Mosaic sets include so much documentation of the sessions and artists that they're a bargain in this sense. So. . . I feel you're missing out, you feel I'm missing out, whatever. I just want to stand up for this set. I'm really not an OP fan of stature, but the music on this set is music I've really enjoyed and will enjoy in the future.
  11. You must shop at a different location. Specialty labels shouldn't reissue stuff you can find at the A&P checkout. But then again, I don't patronize this jiveass label, being that they don't include the original cover art. In this town there's not that type of salvage lp findings, and I believe for the second time (that I've commented) you're exaggerating about Salvation Army bins and Mosaic is far from a "jive-ass label." If you're a vinyl only guy and don't want to take advantage of the fact that Mosaic gathered all these 10" and 12" discs and presented them in a wonderful sounding package, fine. But that's no reason to slime Mosaic, who may one day be the only decent reissue program on the planet. Maybe you're being tongue in cheek about it but there's no smiley. I'm sorry, these posts of yours are just rubbing me the wrong way today.
  12. Not everyone is doing lps these days. And the lps I see at the Salvation Army (and aren't OP, don't see those here, hardly see ANY jazz here) are in bad shape.
  13. Great Costa on the Clark Terry Moodsville "All American" (on cd from OJC as half of "Mellow Moods") especially the piano on "If I were You". . . .
  14. Pops. "St. Louis Blues" from "Plays W. C. Handy." An old old favorite that never loses it's thrill.
  15. Wow, i didn't know that and I played this this morning. . .first time I've played any of his work in more than a year!
  16. Okay, Greg, what have you been smoking? No, you're thinking Wild Bill instead of Muggsy. The Muggsy and Syd Big Four is on the H. R. S. set. There's lots of Chicago Style out there actually thanks to the love and dedication of George H. Buck. Hodes fans should definitely look into the material on cd from Solo Art, Jazzology, and other Buck labels (www.jazzology.com) And you know, almost all that Decca Chicago Style was out on lp and could be well mastered from lp for cd, all is not completely lost. Now if only a record label or two could get the feeling there were a market!
  17. Many many happy happy returns!
  18. There was also a "Swingtets" disc. These didn't sell well. I don't think we'll see Cuscuna releasing further gems. Even the European "reissue" labels seem to steer clear!
  19. Elizabeth Banks, although not looking as much like her as some photos. . . .This was among the first few images to come up in a google search for "Laura" because she's playing Mrs. George W. Bush in Stone's new film. I'm pretty sure Chris found her that way. And got a political jab in as well! Two birds with one stone! That's what the wisdom experience brings does for you.
  20. It's all great. . . ! Too bad they just figure (and probably correctly) "that stuff won't sell."
  21. I'm confused. . .where in the song is "Laura". . . . Maybe Dr. Laura knows where it is. . . . Or more seriously, if Grace is singing "Laura" is the song too early to have "meant" Laura Nyro?
  22. She was living in Texas at the time, very young. Hadn't met George yet.
  23. The recent things I've found that I have a hard time resisting? Nestles's "Coffee Crisp" Dark chocolate covered apricots Chocolate crystalized ginger Yum. . .yum. . .yum!
  24. Just came from seeing this. I liked it. I really liked No Country for Old Men. (Movie AND novel). I haven't seen a lot of their early material, including TBL, so I'm not able to "rank" this one. But I thought it was well done.
