Personally I love Planet Waves, if I had to grab just one Dylan album it would probably be that one for possibly sentimental reasons, but I think he developed a narrative style and flow at this time that was an innovation for his music. I could be wrong, I just love this one and Blood.
  2. In jazz. . .Pops, Fats, Nat, Monk. . . quite a few artists work on me this way. T-Bone Walker and Grateful Dead too.

I don't think he's that remarkable in that regard. Lots and lots of bandleaders let their sidemen solo. I think Miles learned a ton from playing in Parker's band. (There's a guy who also let his sidemen solo "generously"). Seems to me that Miles looked for sax players who would offer that sort of busy tension to the music in contrast to his sparser and cooler tone and ideas that Parker offered to the young Miles.

Maybe it was just filler. Maybe it was just the producer's idea. Not sure either way. Definitely a nice tip of the hat to the influence and artistry of Ahmad Jamal. ...or maybe it was a tip of the hat to the influence and artistry of Red Garland, I don't really care what anybody says, Red Garland was a damn fine pianist. No argument from me.

You know, I think that's my favorite track too.

Hey Allen, thanks for the excerpt. I think he ran out of ideas later, Blood on the Tracks was the last one that I thought was really innovative.
  8. I don't think EMI/Blue Note retains the rights to any of the material. (?)
  9. Well, there's no denying that all religions are forms of myths. So what? Doesn't make ME comfortable with that nonsense that Ra was spouting in that lecture, especially his manipulation of words. I literally was disgusted. If you weren't, cool. I'm sticking to just listening to his music where I can.
  10. You'll dig it.

There are moments on this album that are as good as it gets!
  12. It's a Gambit Records release.
  13. Many more happy ones
  14. Another Jazz Oracle Records partner gone, way too early. Damn. RIP.
  15. I remember the Miles, the Jarrett and the BetCar, good stuff for tv! I also will always remember Rickie Lee Jones' first appearance. . . I sat there glued and said to myself "WHO IS THIS CHICK?" Start of a fanship for me.
  16. I like all these women. . . but Una Mae. . . .
  17. To clarify: what Speeding Arrow does not want is a direct link to the files, which HAS NOT BEEN POSTED HERE, and which is only available to registered members (and which does not remain static).

  20. I'm starting a Robert E. Howard kick, for nostalgia and comfort. "The Weird Works of Robert E. Howard, Volume 1: The Shadow Kingdoms"
  21. Okay I'm sorry i just can't look at it that way. Here is the honest truth with me: I've had the experience in the past with people who distort history and text and add racist and inaccurate analysis in an effort at myth-making (primarily a group of Scientologists I lived and worked around in the eighties) and a few individuals who had twisted thought processes due to paranoia, and I recognize these people vividly in that Ra lecture and i react emotonally, negatively. I'm steering clear of further instances of this sort of Ra so I can remain fond of the man and his work.
  22. These are all radio broadcasts. I don't know of any other releases of this but i have NOT been a Django fanatic and big collector. I like him, a lot, I have a lot of the commercial releases, but nothing beyond that. The sound varies but is generally good to quite good. One session has a bit of distortion, from the source I'm sure. Otherwise the remastering by Ted Kendall is quite nice. And I really like the music. About 2/3 is Django plugged in, which I like a lot. Now listening to the last remaining unheard disc, the third of five.
  23. Garth, Many many more happy ones!
  24. Hope it was a great one Al! many more happy ones!
