Hi Alec, just sent you a PM. -
I just ordered a couple of guitar ensemble charts arranged by Mundell for the studio class I'm teaching. Not very familiar with him, but I like what I'm hearing. If you do a search on youtube there's loads more of him, including duets with Louis Stewart, who lives here in Ireland, and seems to gig fairly regularly in Dublin yet I've still not gone to see him. Yes, I am an arsehole.

I might have to spend more time with this one but on the first listen, I really didn't like it.

More youtubery, this time some vintage Barney Kessel, I really like his playing, bluesy, direct and no fluff or waste and the fact that he is seriously cool. Modest while talking about playing with Ricky Nelson and Elvis Presley, he's also on "Pet Sounds" by the way. Barney Kessel in conversation. Barney Kessel - "Our Day Will Come". Barney Kessel - "Like Someone in Love". Barney Kessel - "Recado Bossa Nova". Barney Kessel - "Make Someone Happy". Barney Kessel - "Love For Sale". Barney Kessel - "One Mint Julep". He rocks!!!

After checking out some of the "The Subject is Jazz" clips on good ol' youtube from Larry's thread, I came accross some very nice Mundell Lowe clips. I think that's a "real" D'Angelico he is using, ie one made by John D'Angelico. Mundell Lowe

expensive CD's where the quality of the material was so good...
Cliff Englewood replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Re-issues
Hey sidewinder, I saw this one myself and was more than a bit curious, but I had just purchased the Fresh Sounds 2 cd set and wasn't sure it would be up to the same standard, is it? Cliff - I don't know the Fresh Sounds Shihab set but can vouch that this one is top notch Shihab. Up to the best standard of sessions like 'Seeds' and 'Companionship' and the work with CBBB etc. I don't have the CD but I have one of those Oktav Japanese facsimile LPs, which sounds fantastic. Recommend that next time this comes in at Dusty, press the trigger marked 'fire' . I think the fact that it has at least one (???), vocal track on it was putting me off, oh yeah, that and the price. I think it was nearly €20 or something like that. -

Happy birthday Art, he's one of my favorites and definitely one of the greats, but there was no way he was ever going to make 83, I mean just look at the picture. He looked like death warmed up, as they say, even in the 50's.

Got that one recently and gave it a first spin yesterday - quite a ride! True, the solo material is great, but I quite enjoyed the strings date as well..... Fantasy dropped the ball with that reissue . In my judgment the solo record is more essential than the strings thing and deserved to be reissued in full . Why leave Hello Young Lovers off the CD ? It's the longest track on the LP , and one of the best . Yes , Jaki recorded the tune again at his Maybeck recital , but Byard fans will find much to savor in this earlier version . Fantasy also missed a chance to pay hommage to Jaki's sense of humor through use of the solo cover for their CD : Couldn't agree more with you Chas. I have this but always skip ahead of the "With Strings" stuff and stick to the "Solo" stuff. "Spanish Tinge #2" is my favorite, great tune.

Gambit seems to have released a "complete" version of these recordings on this 2 disc set. This release includes all of Zoot Sims´ live recordings of 17 tracks recorded in Denmark during august 1978. These quartet performances feature the pianist´ regular trio with Danish bass phenomenon NHOP and drummers Alex Riel or Ed Thigpen. The current 2-CD set marks the first time that all of these difficult to find Danish recordings are presented on one sole edition. CD1 1. FLOWER WALTZ 2. COME RAIN OR COME SHINE 3. FRED 4. GROOVIN´HIGH 5. I WONDER WHERE OUR LOVE HAS GONE 6. IN A MELLOW TONE 7. I GOT IT BAD ( AND THAT AIN´T GOOD) 8. CARAVAN 9. ALL THE THINGS YOU ARE TOTAL TIME: 61:20 CD 2 1. TOO CLOSE FOR COMFORT 2. IN THE MIDDLE OF A KISS 3. I´LL REMENBER APRIL 4. IT´S ALL RIGHT WITH ME 5. THE VERY THOUGHT OF YOU 6. BLUE HODGE 7. MORNING FUN 8. SOFTLY AS A MORNING SUNRISE TOTAL TIME: 60:44 See 12-page booklet for complete information jazzmessengers.com info. I have it, and whatever you think about the Label, it's excellent.

Does anyone have this Clifford Brown recording?...
Cliff Englewood replied to Hardbopjazz's topic in Discography
I couldn't have said it better myself. I couldn't listen to the Bee Hive stuff, I'm sure the music was excellent but I just couldn't hear it. -
Probably my favorite disc on the "Fearless Leader" set is disc 5, which has all the Trane-Harden sessions, it's a really fantastic and consistent listen and is easily as good, if not better than the "rushed", inho, Miles-Trane Prestige sessions.
