  1. So I take it you have this CD and are giving it the proverbial thumbs up?
  2. I recently purchased "Release Record - Send Tape" by Warne Marsh from Peter Ind at Wave, I've only gone through it once so far but I'm quite impressed, good sound quality too. So I'm curious about this one now, "More Jazz From The East Village", also by Warne Marsh, Does anyone have both of them?, are they both from the same sessions? Are they comparable in quality? Sound samples for both can be found amoungst others here.
  3. I don't know if this is really a new release, it must have been out before in some format. Has anyone come across these recordings before? Here is the blurb and the cover; Product Description For the first time ever, Thelonious Monk's complete trio performance at Newport 1958 (only an edited version of "Blue Monk" with overdubbed announcements had been previously released on the film Jazz on a Summer's Day). This CD also contains Monk's splendid and also unissued quartet concert at the same festival the following year. As a bonus, the only two existing tracks featuring Monk with the Duke Ellington band, recorded at Newport '62 and also appearing here for the first time. 12 tracks. Gambit. 2008. 1 JUST YOU, JUST ME 4:16 2 BLUE MONK 4:54 3 'ROUND MIDNIGHT 4:33 4 WELL YOU NEEDN'T 3:42 5 IN WALKED BUD 9:49 6 BLUE MONK 8:44 7 CREPUSCULE WITH NELLIE 2:33 8 WELL YOU NEEDN'T 8:29 9 RHYTHM A NING 7:09 10 Announcement by Duke Ellington* 0:22 11 MONK'S DREAM* 5:22 12 BA-LUE-BOLIVAR-BA-LUES-ARE* 4:24
  4. I can only agree with Dan, sounds like a scam or just incredibly bad luck on his part, but aren't circuit boards pretty difficult to break???
  5. After all this positive feedback I suppose I'm just going to have to give this one another chance, really did nothing for me the first time though.
  6. As I keep the CD cases out of the boxes and as both the Mobley and the Tristano, Konitz and Marsh sets come in those old style large cd cases, I think I could manage to grab both. But then I'd miss the booklets so I'd probably risk the burns to go back and get them.
  7. Lowe you must be the only man approaching 60 who has ADD.
  8. Well if ever anyone needed to justify their decision to turn to drugs, being stuck in car with you has got to be one of the best reasons ever. Even if he got busted that day he could have just thrown himself on the mercy of the Court, "you don't understand your Honour, he just wouldn't shut up, if he wasn't going on about his 2 hour meeting with Tristano, he was blathering on about how he knew Al Haig, it was none stop, then it was about his "movie", on and on, I just had to get something to kill the pain."
  9. Sounds like he's not-so subtley cashing in on / ripping off this guy's version of Over The Rainbow. As for Steve Martin, The Jerk is one of the best movies ever made but he really hasn't been funny since he started doing those Parenthood movies. Didn't he have a dog called "Shithead" in The Jerk?
  10. If I may quote that oft quoted line from "The Life of Brian", you lucky, lucky bast......... :D
  11. DMP's comment about Elvin and Art's earlier group reminded me of this post Vanguard recording; I think it's only a week after the Vanguard and it has Cables on piano but has Michael Formanek and Eddie Marshall on bass and drums. Again, I haven't listened to it in a while but I remember that the fast numbers were really fast, maybe there were more uppers than downers for everybody that evening. :D
  12. I don't know but you really need to follow your own advice and put me on your ignore list, oh yeah and finish your film.
  13. Well you're the living proof of that.
  14. Great link Joe, and I like their catchy name.
  15. I'd probably go along with DMP on this one, although I haven't listened to these recording in a while, I like them rather than love them. If I remember correctly, when I first heard these recordings I felt he started off playing pretty well on the Thursday night but dipped a little bit each night, which if you've read "Straight Life" is perfectly understandable. Would love to hear more about those first Vanguard sets DMP, don't know much about the guys in the band except Gumbs, just from his Woody Shaw recordings.
  16. WTF are you blathering about now?, what PM?, you keep sending me PMs, and speaking of which, I really should post them one of these days, talk about someone in the end-stages of Narcissiticosa Nervosa, I really hope that's your excuse.
  17. Yes, I'll second that question, I have a 2 or 3 of the single discs somewhere that I haven't listened to in a while, if it's just Laurie "Pepper", (were they ever offically/really married?) doing the talking I might just give it a miss. Notes are nothing special, some nice pictures and discussion from Ms. Pepper. I would not buy the set for the notes, the music is really good and the between track introductions/comments are interesting. Art Pepper was a great artist and at the same time a complete mess due to drugs and emotional problems. He obviously suffered a lot and I am sure inflicted emotional pain on the people close to him. It is a shame considering the beautiful music he made at the same time. Martin Cheers Martin.
  18. Yes, I'll second that question, I have a 2 or 3 of the single discs somewhere that I haven't listened to in a while, if it's just Laurie "Pepper", (were they ever offically/really married?) doing the talking I might just give it a miss.
  19. Well, that was a good thought, so I checked http://www.cduniverse.com/productinfo.asp?...x=6070236678408 It doesn't say anything about it being a CD-R, unless I've missed it. And CD-Rs wouldn't have a release date of next Tuesday, would they? MG I was kinda half joking with that one, but weren't the Blue Note CD-Rs advertised as normal CDs initially???
  20. They're probably CD-Rs, that explains the price.
  21. I have this issue of the Spotlite recordings, which I think is the same one John S is talking about and I would agree with his review, right down to the fact that I don't remember too much about the 3 studio tracks, but the live stuff sounded fine. Amazon link for the Complete Live at the Spotlite Club 1958
  22. Although I know it's not a Jazz book, but as he's back in the news again recently I thought I would give this a bit of a plug, for anyone who's interested. It really is a very enjoyable read. It turns out that early on he got some very important advice on how to make a living in the music business from none other than Barney Kessel!!!! Spector was a huge Kessel fan, he actually wrote a letter to Downbeat telling them they should give him more coverage. He eventually got to meet him and was looking for tips on how to make it as a Jazz guitarist but to cut a long story short Kessel told him it would be really difficult to make a living in Jazz and that the real money was in Publishing and Production!!! Oh yeah, by the way, he is sooooooooooooooo guilty.
  23. Nice clip there JSngry, cheers.
  24. Great clip man, thanks.
  25. Ditto on "Lazy Afternoon", class.
