  1. I've used the Spin Clean since 2012, and am generally satisfied with the job it does. Of course, it won't repair scratches and the occasional invisible/mysterious skips, but on the whole it works well. I use purified water from a reverse osmosis water system attached to our kitchen sink, dry them off (make sure to buy additional drying cloths), slide them in a rice paper sleeve, and I'm done. I've occasionally thought about investing in a VPI or similar, but can't justify the counter space it permanently needs. I also don't understand the impulse to clean a disc before each use. If you've cleaned it already, and stored it well, why clean it again? Where's all the new dirt coming from?

    Thanks.
  4. RIP. I know him from an odd, but endearing, album and band named Hungry Chuck, who did one album for Bearsville in 1972. Worth seeking out.

Listening now to Drum Suite, which I found at a record convention last summer. There's no bassist listed. Any idea whom it might be?
  6. Very sad to hear. I've enjoyed the three pairings with Braxton that I've heard/had. Was thinking of picking up the recent Cyrille quartet recording. RIP.
  7. Listening to this now. This is 'effen great. Just a bar band on a Tuesday night.
  8. Dusty Groove has listed a 2-DVD set of this film. A great version of this Miles Davis documentary – one that comes with a full bonus disc that's almost worth the price of the package alone! The core movie is great – a documentary on the rise and music of one of the greatest trumpeters of all time – directed by Stanley Nelson, with lots of vintage footage and studio sessions – and interviews with collaborators like Quincy Jones, Wayne Shorter, and Ron Carter – plus a lot of materials pulled together from the estate of Miles. Bonus DVD features over 70 minutes of live performances from the Montreux Jazz Festival – performances from 1973, 1984, and 1985 – all wrapped up in a book-style package with 16 pages of notes and photos.
  9. Going stir crazy at home?
  10. Thanks! Like others, I couldn't find the thread regardless of how many search criteria I tried.
  11. Listening now to this: I never heard the original 2-CD set, but I can't imagine anything more wonderful than this - hearing each show complete. Truly wonderful music. The liner notes talk about Stan's shortness of breath during the shows, and how the last set needed to be cancelled.
  12. There was a thread a couple of years ago about artists' final recordings, and which ones were recommended. Can anyone find this thread and post a link to it?

He was 81.
  14. Maybe to give to DJs.
  15. "More Than You Know" was arranged by Palle Mikkelborg. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/More_Than_You_Know_(Dexter_Gordon_album) "Strings and Things" has two different dates on it. Four tracks appear to be additional material from "More Thank You Know;" three tracks were from an album by Esko Linnavalli, who did the arrangements. https://www.discogs.com/Dexter-Gordon-Strings-Things/release/8957642 https://www.discogs.com/Esko-Linnavalli-New-Music-Orchestra-A-Good-Time-Was-Had-By-All/release/2362943
  16. Thanks for the feedback; I think you're not alone in feeling lukewarm about the orchestra dates. So, picking an arbitrary number of five, I've chosen: 31206 Dexter Gordon The Shadow Of Your Smile (April 21, 1971 - with Lars Sjosten, Sture Nordin, Fredrik Noren) for the song selection 36032 Dexter Gordon Loose Walk (June 24, 1965 - with Kenny Drew, NHOP, Alex Riel), again for the song selection 36035 Dexter Gordon Lady Bird (August 19, 1965 - with Donald Byrd, Kenny Drew, NHOP, Alex Riel) for Byrd 31785 Dexter Gordon Quartet Candlelight Lady (1974 - with Kenny Drew, Mads Vinding, Ed Thigpen) for the year and length 37017/18 Dexter Gordon Swedish Nights (January 23, 1969 - with Rolf Reicson, Lars Sjosten, Sture Nordin, Per Hulten), for the year I have 1 and 3 on CD; 2 is coming on LP from Tommy's other Steeplechase offer.
  17. I saw "10 members have voted" before I voted, I voted "Huh?", and after I did so it said "11 members have voted."
  18. So I'm considering Tommy's excellent offer of Steeplechase CDs for $13 each. I want so many Dexters, I know I cannot afford them all. How do I choose? Here are the titles I'm considering: 31030 Dexter Gordon More Thank You Know (1975 - with orchestra) 31145 Dexter Gordon Strings & Things (1975 & 1976 - with orchestra) 31206 Dexter Gordon The Shadow Of Your Smile (April 21, 1971 - with Lars Sjosten, Sture Nordin, Fredrik Noren) 31290 Dexter Gordon Round Midnight (fall 1974 - with Benny Bailey, Lars Sjosten, Torbjorn Hultcrantz, Jual Curtis) 31373 Dexter Gordon Revelation (fall 1974 - with Benny Bailey, Lars Sjosten, Torbjorn Hultcrantz, Jual Curtis) 31521 Dexter Gordon The Rainbow People (fall 1974 - with Benny Bailey, Lars Sjosten, Torbjorn Hultcrantz, Jual Curtis) 36004 Dexter Gordon Cry Me A River (November 28, 1962 - with Atli Bjorn, Marcel Rigot, William Schiopffe) 36008 Dexter Gordon Cheese Cake (June 11, 1964 - with Tete, NHOP, Alex Riel) 36012 Dexter Gordon King Neptune (June 24, 1964 - with Tete, Benny Nielsen, Alex Riel) 36015 Dexter Gordon I Want More (July 9, 1964 - with Tete, NHOP, Rune Carlsson) 36018 Dexter Gordon Love For Sale (July 23, 1964 - with Tete, NHOP, Alex Riel) 36031 Dexter Gordon We Dot (June 10, 1965 - with Atli Bjorn, Benny Nielsen, Finn Frederiksen) 36032 Dexter Gordon Loose Walk (June 24, 1965 - with Kenny Drew, NHOP, Alex Riel) 36033 Dexter Gordon Misty (July 8, 1965 - with Kenny Drew, NHOP, Alex Riel) 36034 Dexter Gordon Heartaches (August 5, 1965 - with Kenny Drew, NHOP, Alex Riel) 36035 Dexter Gordon Lady Bird (August 19, 1965 - with Donald Byrd, Kenny Drew, NHOP, Alex Riel) 36036 Dexter Gordon Stella By Starlight (January 6, 1966 - with Pony Poindexter, Kenny Drew, NHOP, Makaya Ntshoko) 36038 Dexter Gordon Satin Doll (June 29, 1967 - with Kenny Drew, Bo Stief, Art Taylor) 31785 Dexter Gordon Quartet Candlelight Lady (1974 - with Kenny Drew, Mads Vinding, Ed Thigpen) 37017/18 Dexter Gordon Swedish Nights (January 23, 1969 - with Rolf Reicson, Lars Sjosten, Sture Nordin, Per Hulten). Here are my considerations: Two titles with orchestra - only choose 1? Three titles with Benny Bailey - which one is best? The others are airchecks. I can go with the musicians I know, which would rule out Sjosten, Nordin, Hultcrantz, Bjorn, etc. But maybe they're great! I can go by year. 1964 was a great year, maybe stick with those. But the 1966 date has Pony Poindexter! 1967: amazing year for Dex. 1969: while I don't know the musicians, this was recorded only two weeks before "Live At The Amsterdam Paradiso," one of my all-time favorite Dexes! 1974: Ed Thigpen - that would be interesting. So I need help (probably in many ways). Anyone care to offer guidance?
  19. So if I hit "Show Results" before voting, it returns "Are you sure? After viewing the results, you will not be able to vote." So how can I vote and say "Yes definitely is being counted" before voting? And what if I vote and say "Yes definitely is being counted", and it turns out it wasn't counted?
  20. Turns out there was another Dexter live set released on Steeplechase, not yet mentioned in this thread:
  21. With the saran wrap peeling off the cover! IIRC, some of the original BYGs had no lip on the vinyl - it was perfectly flat. Made it easy for the tonearm to slide off the record!
  22. Zaid Nasser is the son of Jamil Nasser. Azzedin (Niles) Weston, percussion.
