Paul Horn had an interesting career. I recently picked up a used copy of his 1965 RCA album Cycle. It's really nice: contemplative, moody, at times swinging. Great accompaniment from Lynn Blessing, Mike Lang, Bill Plummer and Bill Goodwin. Great sound, too, on this mono Dynagroove LP. My first album of his was A Special Edition (1974, on Island). I thought it was so interesting that Island would release a double LP by a jazz musician. There's a great version there of Freedom Jazz Dance. I then became aware of 1969's Inside, really a classic of the genre. Although it might have helped launch the New Age category, the music really does transport me to another place. I wish I didn't have such a noisy vinyl copy. Dips into his catalog show a restless mind and a desire to mix up different genres, with consistently rewarding results. What do people here think about his music?

This might have been on one of cable's public access channels. Per Ethan Iverson, the bassist is Charles Fambrough. -
Made my inaugural brisket in the Weber Smokey Mountain. A 2 1/4 lb. brisket, smoked for 7 hours. It's a learning curve: I soaked the mesquite wood chunks beforehand, and a lot of it never burned. In a WSM, you don't need to soak the wood chunks beforehand.

Release date July 3: In 1999, Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen and Mulgrew Miller came together in a unique and unlikely pairing to pay tribute to Duke Ellington on the 100th anniversary of his birth. The result was a passionate and long-lived musical partnership between two masters of their respective instruments, but the original recordings were never released. For the first time ever, more than 20 years after its recording, this lost treasure is finally made available to the public. The duo was initially brought together by Bang & Olufsen and set out to celebrate Ellington and his partnership with bassist Jimmy Blanton. With the help of Per Arnoldi, who is also credited with the albums artwork, NHØP was approached to take part and tapped Mulgrew Miller to tackle a series of Ellingtons classic themes and a couple of their own. He saw the opportunity to work with Mulgrew Miller, a pianist whom he admired and had not yet had the opportunity to work with, and this decision paid off greatly for both of them. A great musical and personal partnership was born, and the duos captivating chemistry is obvious from the first notes.

A search shows many individual Keith Jarrett threads but not one all-encompassing "corner," so here it is. I don't know if some people still feel the compulsion to rant about his vocalizing, but if they do, please get it over with quickly so we can then discuss the music. I'll start by posting a link to an interesting blog post: The Story Behind Keith Jarrett's Trio, 1967-1972

The November 2019 edition of BBC Music Magazine has a profile of Venezuelan pianist Gabriela Montero. I had never heard of her before. She was one of those freakishly talented prodigies. She loves to improvise, much as in a jazz way, but within the classical idiom. There is a video of her performance of the Haydn D minor Concerto when she was 9. She does an encore that's an improvisation (begins at the 7 minute mark): I found this interesting, from the article: In recent times, she and McElroy (her husband) have been on a journey of discovery. A neuroscientist in Baltimore, Dr. Charles Limb, has been exploring the changes in Montero's brain during improvisation. McElroy describes the challenge: "What we're trying to find out is whether or not in Gaby's particular case her brain functions differently when she plays memorized music as opposed to improvised music. For the experiment, she was given instructions in 30-second random bursts to play a pre-designated memorized piece of music - and then to switch as soon as she was asked to do so by the computer to the improvised state. So, in other words, her environment didn't change. "What Limb actually saw was that Gaby's auditory cortex, which processes sound - and which you'd expect to be on fire if you're creating in the moment - was closing down or switching off. It was sort of getting out of the way. So Dr. Limb then had to ask the question, "Well, if the normal systems are not being used then what is being used?" And so they created a 3D model of Gaby's brain through the computer and sliced through it until they found some sort of activity. "In fact, they found a huge amount of activity in her visual cortex - a firework display of activity during the improvised process. She was looking at music and seeing it as a landscape in a way that some mathematicians view numbers." But Montero says that this does not reflect her own thinking, so Limb has concluded that the pianist's visual cortex is co-opted to help with the complicated business of improvising, in the way that a laptop can be made more powerful by using an extra graphics card, for example.

NPR obituary: https://www.npr.org/2020/05/25/845814061/jimmy-cobb-the-pulse-of-kind-of-blue-dies-at-91 RIP. I saw him once, at a benefit for Barney Kessel at Birdland. I don't remember if he backed Pat Martino or the band after Pat, which may have included George Coleman.
