    Otis Rush R.I.P

Masaki Rush, wife of Otis Rush announced that on September 29, 2018 Mr. Rush, one of the most influential Chicago blues artists of all time passed away due to complications from a stroke which he initially suffered in 2003. http://www.otisrush.net
  5. Yeah, it's really fast. Jerry's singing can barely keep up.
  6. I’m not talking about them playing fast; the tape might be speeded up.
  7. Listening now to Dave's Picks 26 (Albuquerque). It sounds to me a tad fast. I haven't found any mention of it on the Web. Anyone here agree with me?
  8. The Ken Burns Jazz is the best one-disc compilation of Monk's entire career. It has tracks from all labels he recorded for, including his last session on Black Lion, and makes sure to include two tracks with Coltrane and one with Rollins. Sound is excellent, liner notes intelligent. You can't go wrong here.
  9. It's a series from England (there's a Soho Scene '62, '63, etc.). Each title has two discs: one of English jazz from that year, and one of American jazz. None of it is licensed (think Proper). Here's the back cover of this release, courtesy of Amazon:

  11. One of my true heroes. Happy birthday, and many more!
  12. PRA Archive #: BC1266 Description: The Jazz musician discusses his art, the meaning of music in the human experience, and his particular spiritual approach.|AN INTERVIEW WITH JOHN COLTRANE / interviewed by Frank Kofsky. - The Jazz musician, John Coltrane, discusses his art, the meaning of music in human experience, and his particular spiritual approach. This rare interview was done less than a year before his death. - RECORDED: November 1966. BROADCAST: KPFK, 1 Jan. 1973. 58 minutes. $17.95. See: https://www.pacificaradioarchives.org/recording/bc1266 Noticed this while I was surfing the Web. Haven't heard it.
  13. Listening now to the Savoy box for the first time; I'm through disc 5. Reserving opinion on the sound quality until I can A/B with some other things in my collection, such as earlier Savoy reissues and the Serge Chaloff titles on the Chaloff Mosaic box. But it's really interesting to hear this material in a label-centric way, as opposed to a collection focused on a particular artist. Because the sessions appear chronologically, you really get a sense of the times. Things were frantic! Virtually every track so far is taken at a hyper tempo. Makes me think of Symphony Sid's repeated references to "all-frantic." It's almost like this was music tailored for an audience hopped-up on bennies.
  14. Dr. Claude Donkke really needs to be recognized for his contributions to jazz.

  16. Thanks for the tip! It is an "add-on" item, so I needed to buy an additional $25, but luckily my Roomba needed some parts.
  17. Thanks for posting that. Texas has a great jazz history.
  18. There's your answer, courtesy of Discogs: "2cd packed in foldout digipack, part of a 20set miles davis collection madi in the EU. Tracks 1.5, 1.6, and 2.3 is not originally on LP, but is previously issued on the japaneese Miles Davis Album "Miles! Miles! Miles!" (CBS/Sony SRCS 6513/14) November 1, 1992." 19. Just noticed that the version of We Want Miles available in Japan has 3 extra tracks: Ursula, Aida, and Fat Time. http://www.cdjapan.co.jp/product/SICP-4019
  20. Finally got to listen to disc 1 of this: It's the recent Japanese release of the Black Lion material, on Muzak records (I kid you not), licensed by Black Lion. The complete session on two discs: one solo, one with the McKibbon/Blakey trio. Sound quality is gorgeous. I've owned this material in the past (on crackly US Black Lion vinyl), and it was such a delight to hear it again. Monk sounds spry and relaxed. I've never heard the outtakes before, and the last track on disc one struck me as something in another category. Titled "Chordially (Improvisation)," I'm not sure there's anything like it in the Monk canon. It reminded me of Debussy. Can't wait to hear disc two.
  21. I don't regret buying the MJQ box. Perhaps not the most exciting approach to jazz, but there's a lot of substance to their playing. The Jamal on the other hand... I kinda think this suffices:

Thanks for the tip, Kate. But what will this consist of? And what is "Lips first six+"?

    Trane home video

That was great. Heartwarming. Great shots in Rudy's.
  24. One of the reasons the New York Press (see my post above) made such a stir was that it was free. It contained all the event listings that were also in the Voice, but it was free, while the Voice was (I think) 50 cents. To combat this, the Voice became free in Manhattan only (which is where the Press was available). This led to the absurd situation where you had to pay for the Voice if you were in Brooklyn or Queens (or Chicago or Dallas, evidently).
