There's an interesting site called redhotjazz.com. Lots of old 78's available for download. However, they are all in Real Audio format (.ra). Does anyone know how to play these on a current Mac (High Sierra)?

While doing some research (aka wasting time) on Amazon, I stumbled across these. I can't imagine listening to one of these from start to finish, but I am intrigued. These are full performances.

I wasn't thrilled with the Konitz "Live at the Half Note." I think there was a reason it wasn't released at the time, and that was Bill Evans, who sounds (to these ears) drugged out and aimless. Whatever groove the group is whipping up gets doused by Evans's comping and solos. YMMV, of course. BTW, the mp3 of that album goes for $6.93: https://www.amazon.com/Live-Half-Note-Lee-Konitz/dp/B00FBO354S/ref=sr_1_1?s=dmusic&ie=UTF8&qid=1535579055&sr=1-1-mp3-albums-bar-strip-0&keywords=konitz+half+note

Any Interest In a Post-Roulette Basie Verve set?

How many discs? -
Thought I'd mention this one. I'm not enough of an expert on Marsh's discography to know which ones are truly primo, but this one seems unusual in that Marsh shares the front line with a guitarist (Ron Eschete) rather than a pianist:

Also sounded like they were apologizing to JSngry (or someone much like him), i.e. the reference to "pressure."

Just to be clear, the "quote" function makes it seem that I said the quote beginning "That's another reason..." Didn't come from me.

That's like saying "live fast, die young, and leave a beautiful corpse." That's great for dramatic affect: image, marketing, and leaving an impact, but... Can we transpose this with the recent Sonny Rollins thread, and wonder whether Sonny (God-forbid) should have died after his Impulse contract ended...you know, "right on schedule?" It might have kept a tighter focus on his achievements to that point, but we would have been bereft of all that great music on Milestone and in his concerts from the '70's onwards. We simply can't know what Coltrane might have produced had he survived. It might have been great, it might have been mediocre, it might have been somewhere in between...one thing that's guaranteed, it would have been older. An older Coltrane might have had important value, much as an older Satchmo or Dylan have had. Also, his music might have reverted to something more traditional. I sometimes think, for some people, that was their real beef with Rollins's music from the 70's onwards: it was pretty, it was song-form, it was tuneful and melodic. He wasn't trying to break new ground; he just wanted to play pretty for the people. I think that rankled some core jazz listeners, who wanted more "political" statements.

My guess is that Mosaic has already done the groundwork for the new Woody Herman set: the research on takes and alternates, working with the label to find the masters and secure the permissions, contract someone to write the booklet, etc. In this "wind-down" period for them, they have to see whether it's worth it to lay out the money and make it a reality. I think 3,000 is the smallest run they've ever had. To look at it another way, if they can't sell such a small amount, it's proof that the jazz market has really contracted; it may no longer be fertile ground to maintain a business.

I don’t know whether LSD influenced Coltrane’s late period, but has anyone explored how much his knowledge of having liver cancer did? The later music can be heard as signs of panic, rage, and working towards accepting the inevitable.

I have a 6th generation model ("MB565"). Not being able to use iTunes is a deal-breaker for me.

We visited the McIlhenny/Tabasco headquarters/factory in Avery Island, Louisiana once. They have a great gift shop where they serve Tabasco ice cream. Worth a visit. -
I got an email too, but the Herman is listed under "backordered items." I wonder if this means they've decided to proceed with it. Yup! Just checked the Mosaic site - it's now listed under Upcoming Releases. http://www.mosaicrecords.com/prodinfo.asp?number=267-MD-CD

Meditating on a Riff

I started there in fall 1973, and was head of the Jazz Project from 1974-75. Besides Rollins, we put on Oregon, Weather Report and (a free show) Jack DeJohnette/John Abercrombie. Funny that you mention the Sam Rivers show, which was in the fall of 1973. I was there that night, and after 2 hours of high-energy music, the concert ended suddenly when the Social Hall was evacuated because of the shooting. I saw Barry Altschul recently in Houston, backing Patty Waters, and asked him if he remembered that show. He didn't. I said "it was you and Dave Holland backing Sam Rivers." He thought back and said "Are you sure it wasn't Reggie Workman?" Do you remember who it was? And yes, Straight Country and Blues. They put on a lot of great folk festivals. But so did Cornell. It was a great time for music. -

I have to take credit here. I was head of the Harpur Jazz Project at SUNY Binghamton that year when we brought in Sonny. I signed the contracts, brought in the sound system, dealt with blowback from Lucille when we brought in a jazz-rock band from Ithaca to open the show. Tickets were $2!!! It made me very happy that you remember the show. -

Was just listening yesterday to "Harlem Boys" from "Don't Ask", and really enjoyed it (again). It was "of it's time" too (1979).
