Ralph Towner's Solo Concert is one of my favorites of his over his long career. I also really like Sargasso Sea, his duets with Abercrombie. I may pick up "Solstice;" curious about many of the others listed.

He was a really interesting guy. Regarding his later years, though, you really have to ask yourself some hard questions about what was going on in his life. I have no facts, but a successful, creative guy pretty much stops working by the early '70's, drops from view, and dies of a heart attack in his early 40s? Sounds to me like drugs and a dissolute lifestyle, which would be a real shame if true.

Just finished listening to the recent Japanese reissue of All That's Good. Wow. Gave me chills when I listened to it. I loved the way he used those voices, and how they fit so well in the instrumental blend. And so greasy! A word we haven't used here lately, but so descriptive of this album. Great concept, great execution; a real winner. Kudos to the tight, tasty band also. Sound quality is excellent. We should have a thread here on Ronnie Braithwaite's BN covers. I love them.

To me, Draper sounds like an elephant dancing. You know the old joke: it's not that he dances gracefully, it's a wonder that he dances at all. Valiant effort, just not suitable as a solo instrument.

Dan, I totally agree with you about Cables with Dex. I hear the same pattern on most tunes: Dex gets a nice thing going, then when Cables starts to solo, the whole tune stops and tries to turn into a George Cables showcase. So many arpeggios, and it seems less about the tune than about Cables. This pattern also mars much of Live at Carnegie Hall, though Dex always redeems it.

Does anyone have this and can opine upon it?

I just went on the amazon.it site and these two boxes (Jarrett and Mingus) are way more than you paid. Did you just get lucky or am I looking in the wrong place? The price came out to be 34 euro including shipping which is no real deal........it charged me 14 euru shipping.......no free shipping !!!! Well, of course no free shipping...it's being shipped from Italy. As for your 14 euro shipping charge, I can only say that my shipping (the 2 box sets + 2 individual CDs) came to 15,43 eur. (I also bought 2 of the Atlantic pseudo-Japanese titles, both by Art Farmer: Live At The Half-Note and Sing Me Softly Of The Blues. 4,51 eur each.)

A slight digression: those of you who like Overseas may want to check out "Sea Changes," where he revisited much of the album almost 40 years later. I don't own it, but hope to someday.

I bought the Keith Jarrett Impulse Years box for 17,21 eur (price appears slightly higher on amazon.it but VAT is deducted when shipping to U.S.) which = $19.50 usd, and the Mingus Debut box for 19,83 eur, which = $22.47 usd. With shipping, prices come out to about what it shows in eur. Looks like that whole Italian Verve box series is on sale.
