  1. LOS ANGELES (AP) — A new Jimi Hendrix album is coming March 5. The musician's website says "People, Hell and Angels" contains 12 previously unreleased tracks recorded in 1968 and '69. Rolling Stone revealed the album cover on its website Wednesday. Hendrix recorded the songs apart from the Jimi Hendrix Experience as he considered new, experimental directions for his follow-up to "Electric Ladyland." He plays keyboards, percussion and a second guitar on the album. Source: http://www.kpic.com/news/entertainment/180456061.html
  2. Amazon is having a one-day sale on the Yamaha RX-V671. It seems a good deal at $299. Does anyone have any thoughts about the unit?
  3. Saw this on Amazon...This set brings together the albums Special Edition, Tin Can Alley, Inflation Blues and Album Album.
  4. Thanks for posting that. I read it with enthusiasm, even though, after a while, I realized it was another really long New Yorker article. I did read it to the end, and enjoyed it. The Phil Schaap mention was pretty cool.
  5. A great, tasteful, swinging drummer. RIP.
  6. Can we assume that the amazon.de version will have liner notes in German?
  7. I recommend the live version of "Funkallero" done by Evans' trio with Getz as guest artist performed at Laren in '74. The CD is titled BUT BEAUTIFUL (Milestone MCD-9249-2) released under Evans' name. I wonder why this wasn't included in the Bill Evans Milestone box.
  8. There was a Milestone two-fer called "Thelonious Monk - April in Paris/Live." According to the liner notes, this was drawn from tapes provided to Riverside to fulfill Monk's contract. The original two-disc set on Riverside was called "Two Hours With Thelonious," and had concert material from France and Italy. There was a subsequent one-disc set on Riverside called "Monk in France," containing the Paris portion. In comparing "Monk in France" to "April in Paris/Live," I see that AIPL has the following tracks not on MIF: Jackie-ing, Rhythm-a-ning, Epistrophy, and April In Paris. Are these tracks available on any other release?
  9. JazzLover451: Welcome to the board. JLH stands for Jonathan Horwich, who's been releasing reissues on his International Phonograph label. He has plans to reissue Flute Fever. See this thread, beginning with post #150, for details: Don't let Chuck scare you away; wear your war wounds with pride!
  10. I know; perfectly awful.
  11. I'm in. Love this site!
  12. eMusic just listed two releases on the Lantower label (yeah, I know...), of Miles at the Olympia 1960: volume 1 is March 21, volume 2 is October 11. Sound quality is good on both.
  13. I just noticed an ad for this documentary: The Other Dream Team http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/review/sundace-2012-dream-team-review-284010
  14. The odds are good that the Amazon US price will come way down before release.
  15. I worked for awhile with Danny Davis of Sun Ra's band, and he always recommended apple cider vinegar and honey.
  16. Turn on the heat?
  17. Along the lines of the MJQ box, I'd like to see a John Lewis on Atlantic box. It might force a reevaluation of all this interesting stuff, especially with a well-written booklet.
  18. I don't know what this means. Think Braxton's "For Trio" at one end, and Brotzmann's "Machine Gun" on the other.
  19. Huh. I've owned the Sam Rivers Mosaic for years, but never thought of it as a "Free Jazz" box...maybe disc 3, but otherwise pretty straight-ahead. Perhaps Free Jazz can be thought of as a continuum with "abstract" at one end and "noise" at the other, but not sure it encompasses "melodicism." Anyway, for Free Jazz box sets, Coltrane's Live in Japan, also Impulse Box Sets 4 and 5. Sun Ra's Artyard In A Box. And how about:
  20. Look at the left column on the screen, under "By time period." Change "Content I have not read" to "New since my last visit."
  21. It looks cleaner, and it definitely loads faster. Searches are fast too. I do miss the subtitles, tho, as they lent a literary air; this is more "just the facts, ma'am." I'm looking forward to using it.
  22. I really liked Volkher's post, and I'm glad he shared it. I never had much patience for Allen's posts (I actually have him on ignore), and this gave me a very different insight.
