  1. I received the CD today and listened to it closely with headphones. Some occasional clicks can be heard, but they sound more like static tape clicks, shorter and treblier than LP clicks. I think this CD has indeed been indeed made from vinyl, but a noise reduction process must have been used, eliminating the normal constant vinyl surface noise and reducing the loudest clicks to very short almost inaudible bursts. How could it be that the quietest track (track 3) has the least noise? But this hasn't done any bad to the naturalness of the sound. Maybe the piano on that track sounds a bit muffled compared to the other tracks, and generally there is a certain overall veil over the sound. But it's very acceptable for me who hates artificially processed remasterings (Sonic Solutions, NoNoise and the like). The LP used seems have been mint, because no distortion can be heard on louder passages, except the ensemble playing on track 6 and the usual tape overload present on most 60's RVG recordings. All in all, not an audiophile CD, but excellent restoration and most importantly, one of the best Duke Pearson sessions (together with "Wahoo") back on CD.
  2. Thanks ubu. Deutschlandfunk (DLF) is my favourite station when it comes to jazz broadcasts. They have one every Monday at 21:05-22:00. Usually german concerts that are a few weeks or months old. http://www.dradio.de/dlf/vorschau/ The other weekly jazz program I regularly listen too is "Jazz Club" on France Musiques, every friday evening from 22:45-1:00. These are broadcasts from Paris jazz clubs, usually live. Most of the time concerts by french bands, but often internationally known artists too. http://www.radiofrance.fr/chaines/france-musiques/prgm/
  3. Happy birthday, Berigan
  4. What is the purrpose of the built in A/D converter? There is already a A/D chip in every PC soundcard, so there is duplication of that part. I would also stay away from DJ turntables unless you really need it for that specific use. Hifi turntables offer better sound at a lower price.
  5. There are more and more universal players or DVD players that also play SACD and have high quality audio converters. But most hifi fans still have a better sounding CD player than DVD player. That was also the reason why the DAD mentioned above wasn't successful.
  6. As far as I know (I´m not a DVD expert) this is not new. 24bit/96kHz Audio is already available on DVDs currently. Mostly on video DVDs (concerts, video clips), but there are also some audio-only DVDs available in that format: - DAD discs by Classic Records, released in 1998 - The Bob Brookmeyer/Kenny Wheeler album Island contains a bonus DVD which has video footage, MP3 files, graphic files (the score) and the music content in 24bit/96kHz format. The problem with this format, as with DVD-A, is that one needs a DVD player (or PC) to listen to the music, so one can´t play it in the car, on the bedroom system or a portable player. This can only be achieved with the new DVD-A DualDiscs, which contain a CD-compatible part, like hybrid SACDs.
  7. Thanks. The Amazon DVDs seem to be different editions (different title and editor), but the content is probably similar.
  8. "Drum ode" is an excellent 70's Liebman recording, with Beirach, Abercrombie and many percussionists. My favourite Liebman ECM session is "Lookout farm", but it has not been reissued on CD. I'm still hesitating to get the Liebman Mosaic, because I just bought the hatOLOGY double CD "Bookends", a duo session with pianist Marc Copland and Dave Liebman. That would be too much Liebman/piano duos at once.
  9. Great, couw. Both covers are cool, but the cutting (amputation!) work behind Drum Suite especially is an specially brilliant idea.
  10. Sorry to read about your troubles, Jim. To cover the cost of the message board, you could set up a voluntary donation system. I've seen many free websites with interesting content that use a Paypal donation button. Good luck
  11. Nothing gets lost here These reissues have already been discussed: Verve to reissue "Soul Sisters" The Verve Mini-LP CDs, Some early ones may be on their way out
  12. The Electric Miles B)
  13. Wynton cold and impersonal? Well, you haven´t heard this new cat
  14. This reads like a Laurel and Hardy script
  15. Michael Cuscuna in the liner notes of the 1994 CD.
  16. I think they would rather edit out Trane and add Diana Krall -_-
  17. Record cleaning machine ? As far as the Mikulski/ZYX OJC LPs go, the pressings are very good and the vinyl thicker that normal LPs (must be something like 150g). Of course this doesn't help if the tapes have been poorly remastered.
  18. "New aFrica" is a great session. I got it on LP recently, a 2002 pressing from the italian Get Back label, licensed from Charly. The sound is very bad, I think it has been dubbed from vinyl. I've also seen a CD with the two Moncur BYG session together.
  19. I can only speak about the german pressings, made by Mikulsky/ZYX. I bought a dozen of them at Zweitausendeins (5 Euro/LP). The german OJC LPs are made from the same digital tapes as the CDs, so it's the late 80's remastering by Phil De Lancie at Fantasy Studios. The best LPs sound ok, but not better than the CDs made from the same tapes, and the worst sound awfullly thin and flat. The pressing quality is very good. So clearly the german OJCs are not for audiophiles.
  20. What about William Kotzwinkle and Dr. Janusz Rat, the bavarian dentist?
  21. I´m looking for such a low power tube amp for my ... headphones. I just won a AKG K1000, which are "earspeakers" that need to be connected to the loudspeaker outputs of an amplifier and sound best with a dedicated tube amp. Unfortunately, all tube amp recommendations below $500 I´ve found so far concern small US brands which are not available in Europe.
  22. Marcus, I'll buy it from you if you don't like it
