  1. I agree. If you simply want a large screen, or if you watch a lot of DVDs or higher definition sources, now is the time to get a LCD (or plasma), because >42" screens have become affordable and the image quality has improved a lot. On the other hand, there is no point in replacing a CRT screen with a small LCD (32") to watch standard definition TV, except for the convenience (flatness and reduced weight). It will a couple of years until the next great thing (SED screens) becomes a realistic purchasing option. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Surface-condu...emitter_display
  2. I haven't heard it. I noticed it because a dutch friend asked me about it. The album seems to be available only in the Netherlands (so far).
  3. Why not? EMI considers "Blue Note" to be just a brand, and not a record label. From dutch singer Trijntje Oosterhuis' homepage http://www.trijntje.nl/page/bioeng.php BTW, her album "The look of love" is No 1 in the dutch album charts, on top of the Beatles "Love" and U2 "Singles collection". Not bad for a Blue Note album
  4. I find Sonny Clark's "Cool struttin'" to be overrated, or overexposed. It seems like this is always one of the first Blue Note albums to be reissued in a new series (together with "Blue Train", "Maiden voyage", "Moanin'" and other inevitable albums by Blue Note legends), only because of the popular cover. There was also a lot of hype on the BNBB about Lee Morgan's "Sonic boom" or Andrew Hill's "Dance with death", albums which had cult status only because they were so rare. In my view, "Sonic boom" is just an average later Lee Morgan session, not better than the other readily available albums.

  6. The "From" field in emails can easily be faked, so this probably does not come from www.egreetings.com Just like this wave of illegitimate greeting cards spreading a virus: http://www.postcards.org/postcards/special...edna_virus.html
  7. For most people, it's the size of the screen (and the flatness) that makes them decide for a LCD or plasma. There is no CRT screen larger than 36", and CRTs cannot be attached to the wall. The higher resolution of these screens is already noticable with standard DVD playback. People who use the LCD TV with their game console or the PC will also benefit from the increased resolution. However standard definition TV usually looks better on classic CRT screens. So the best choice depends on what the screen is used for.
  8. OK, just a guess: Your item description says "Released by Classic records in 1993" and "out of print". That's a small error, as the label is "Classics jazz", as you correctly indicate in the listing. "Classic records" is a limited edition audiophile label. Maybe there are many users who run an automatic search on "classic records" and "out of print" to find some rare items by this label, and that's how they come to see your auction.
  9. I would like to see box sets by - Lennie Niehaus (as done by Definitive ) - Mal Waldron - Shelly Manne 50's studio sessions - Teddy Charles
  10. It was a photo with a giant poster "Homo sex is sin" (like in the photo below) hanging from a lamp post. A relaxed, smiling guy wearing a pink shirt stands below it and masks the word "sin" with a piece of cardboard with the word "great". Next to him stands an astonished grumpy old protester with a "Jesus saves you" (or something similar) sign.
  11. Picture quality does not seem to be the most important factor for many buyers. Most people just want a large and flat screen. For that reason, companies usually offer screens in different price ranges. For example, Sony has 5 different 40" LCDs, from $1500-4000. The difference is in the picture quality, the technical features and the design. The cheap models usually have the technology from the previous generation.
  12. Some small corrections: The title of Chesky SACD 314 is "New York Time", and 322 is "Traffic" http://www.chesky.com/core/details.cfm?pro...uctcategoryid=3 http://www.chesky.com/core/details.cfm?pro...uctcategoryid=3 I haven't see confirmation of the John Hicks disc. It's not on the Chesky homepage or on CD Universe
  13. They are all hybrids, and are among the best sounding SACDs I own (more than 300). The Hazeltine anf Hank Jones are very good trio sessions, though nothing speectacular. The Coryell is very rockish. The Abercrombie is slow and meditative, too much for my taste. I haven't heard "Mysterious Shorter" yet.
  14. Lohan offers words of condolence to Altman's family: 'Be adequite' (The Independent)
  15. The problem is to stay within the recommended dosis
  16. Have you seen the Jazz Icons DVDs? You will be surprised. Some contain european TV recordings from 1958, and the sound and video quality is amazing, far superior to the all other DVDs with vintage TV recordings released before.
  17. That looks interesting. BTW, Henry Kaiser and Wadada Leo Smith also did a partial remake of "Bitches Brew" on their Upriver album.
  18. Discography of the Dragon set: http://www.kind-of-blue.de/seiten/boxen/mi...omplete_box.htm (it does not indicate that Miles and Stitt don't play on a few of the October tracks)
  19. Thanks David for that link. The subject was also discussed in this thread: http://www.organissimo.org/forum/index.php?showtopic=31151 The BBC article reads like it's the UK governement or legislator who would decide on this extension of copyright. But in fact, copyright duration is regulated within EU law, so only the EU Commission can propose a change. That report by the UK treasury can only have some political influence. So far, it was mainly the lobby in favor of extension that could be heard. The BBC also has some interesing FAQs on the issue: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/4918214.stm
  20. An opportunity for ArkivCD to take over the SonyBMG Classical catalogue? http://www.playbillarts.com/news/article/5627.html
  21. The ArkivCD series is offering the classic Karajan recording http://www.arkivmusic.com/classical/album....p;album_group=8 It's surprising that DG would let this go OOP. I'll get the regular CD as long as it's still available.
  22. It's a good idea, although I doubt that the many inclusions of frequently recorded mainstream works will be successful at that price. It would be more interesting for rare repertoire. Who needs a $15 CD-R of Semyon Bychkov's interpretation of Shostakovich's 11th symphony when so many other good recordings of this work are available on mid-priced CD? But given that it's an on-demand system, maybe it's already profitable if only a few dozen copies of every title are sold.
  23. Seinfeld - The Complete Seventh Season DVD on CD Universe That is actually funny, since Kramer is the least prejudiced among the Seinfeld characters.
  24. My post wasn't directed against Hucknall, whose music I like. But in 30 years the Beatles will still be big sellers, but Simply Red won't. So it's very dishonest when the music industry sends second rate artists (only in terms of economic success, not in erms of artistic merit) to defend the coyright extension, because it's mainly the Elvis Presley and John Lennon estate that will benefit from it. And of course the record companies who sell these recordings. The industry is not lobbying for copyright extension to help the poor old guy who had a single hit in the 60's to continue to receive royalties so he can pay his medical bills.
  25. Sorry, but that article is entirely predictable. There is a lot of lobbying going on as the EU Commission is preparing a study on copyright term extension. It would not benefit Nick Hucknall. Nobody will listen to Simply Red records in 30 years. It's for the Beatles and the Rolling Stones.
