There's "Alfie" and there's "Alfie's Theme". The Bacharach tune I could do without. Sonny's version rocks, though. Also don't care for: Somewhere Over the Rainbow Willow Weep for Me -
Coming to Yoshi's Oakland, June 20-21. Already got my tix. Billy Harper (Tenor Sax) Eddie Henderson (Trumpet) David Weiss (Trumpet) Craig Handy (Alto Sax) George Cables (Piano) Cecil McBee (Bass) Billy Hart (Drums)

Austin - 3/15/12

Not a huge fan myself, but was happy to be able to see him up close in a relatively small venue. He doesn't bother me, but I don't get the intense adoration, either.

He's touring with a 17-piece band now. Maybe that plays into the "over-production" of the album. I saw him in Austin, and it was such a rousing show that the songs almost didn't matter. Not being familiar with most of the new tunes, I preferred the old stuff, though. Will have to get the new album and give it some time, for sure.

Seems like it ALWAYS goes for a premium price on ebay: $300-$400, I think.

Any stock investing / finance folks in here?

I've been with T. Rowe Price for many years and have been very happy with their service - both mutual funds and brokerage. I find the TRP funds to be very reliable and are usually rated favorably on Morningstar. -

Just back from SXSW in Austin and was VERY fortunate to have been able to see Bruce up close in the 2,700 seat Austin City Limits/Moody Theatre. Once in a lifetime opportunity, for sure. Not to mention cameo appearances by Tom Morello, Jimmy Cliff and Eric Burdon. -
Just my $.02, but I think "Signify" is a good starting point - it was for me anyway. Seems to represent both their past and future sounds pretty well. The 2-disk "Special Edition" has lots of hidden gems in it, as well.

I saw this group last week and really enjoyed it overall. Dave Holland's bass was not easily heard though. I turned his amp up after the first song but it was never really loud enough when everyone was playing and that was a real shame as I love the tone he gets from his bass. Also he was playing a new instrument I'd never seen before. The lower half of the body of the bass was a little truncated so it looked a littl odd. I don't know if the newness of the instrument had anything to do with the volume level. I kept waiting for the soundman to do something about it and I wanted to yell out that I couldn't hear him very well. I was ten rows from the stage and dead center so it shouldn't have been an issue. The only other quibble is the lack of solos from Jason Moran. Potter was the dominant soloist that night and though he's a fine player I find his solos a little predictable and Moran's voice would have been a welcome relief. Jason also played the Fender Rhodes which added a nice color to the program. They played compositions by everyonen in the band including Eric Harland. Eric's drumming was nothing short of fantastic and perfect at every moment. Just a real superb musician at the top of his game. Completely agree with this review. It was an unusual looking bass - although the sound was mixed OK at my show. I liked Jason's Rhodes playing, too. Nice touch. -
Thanks for the update, Chuck.

Don't know - I only have Vol. 2.

Back in the day used to listen to their albums religiously and recite lines with friends and roomates constantly. Haven't listened to them in too long a time, so I don't remember a lot of the great details, but I'm sure if I stuck a record on the turntable they would all come rushing back to me like a hot kiss on the end of a wet fist. I did manage to see them about 5 years ago and they were still hilarious.

Yeah, I've had that problem for about a week. I looked at the eMusic message board and there are some discussions about it. If you refresh the screen that you're trying to order from, it should work OK. Clearing your cache couldn't hurt, either. Annoying, for sure ...

Saw him last month with the Overtone quartet - they were on FIRE! Nothing to worry about ...

have a GREAT one, FREEdEEEEEEEEiEEEEEEEEEEcEEEEEEEEkEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I know you will.

Like I said, it may just need more listening and I'll certainly check those tunes out.

I DL'd it from Amazon when it was $2.99 a week or so ago. Can't seem to get through it, though. All the songs sound the same to me: ultra-high energy, jackhammer drums, insane guitar EFX, crazy stop-and-go rhythms, and DLR vocals. Sounds like a recipe for success, but ultimately there seems to be no song structure.......at all. Maybe I just need to give it more time.

Here's another Amazon bargain - $3.99 Nirvana - Nevermind [Deluxe Edition] 2 "disks" Total Length: 2:26:52

I just sent an email to Mosaic about our discussion and included the discography that Brownie put together. Considering the variety of labels and difficulty obtaining rights from them, I doubt it would be possible for them to pull it off. But the idea is out there, anyway ... I also suggested that maybe there's some additional unreleased material that is controlled by the Roach estate or Billy himself that they could add to the mix.
