  1. As an aside, DeepDiscount.com currently has that disc and the other three live Airplane releases by Collectors' Choice Music for ridiculously low prices - between $2-3 per disc. Just search for "Jefferson Airplane" and you'll see them. Apparently they are blowing out these and a bunch of other CCM releases that have been discontinued in the wake of wholesaler Super D's acquisition of Infinity Resources (parent company of both DeepDiscount and CCM). I picked up all four for $14 and change shipped, only remembering after the fact that free shipping is offered on all orders of $15 or more. Whoa.........thanks for the heads up on that! Got Signe's Farewell, Grace's Debut and Return to the Matrix for $11.06. Nice!
  2. This box is going to be a fun listen. As far as the Airplane - one of my Top 5 favorite 60s bands. They may be "of a time", but a lot of music is - from ALL genres. Doesn't make them any less enjoyable to listen to. The band as a whole (during their peak, pre-Bark years) was more talented than any of the individuals, IMO. Each musician played a crucial part in the overall sound.
  3. Good to know. I pulled that out and listened to it yesterday.
  4. FYI, price drop on the 5 CD set to $35.22.
  5. I would throw "artisinal" in there, too.
  6. Sounds great! I was definitely planning to pick this up, but the Amazon 'extra disk version' threw me off. Seems to be the same price, anyway. Thanks for heads up on "In the West," Lon. I saw that it was being released, but didn't really look into how it was different from the original. Looks like it's worth getting, too. I only have the LP, anyway.
  7. I'm sure this is a must-have. The Winterland tracks that were released in the 80s (2 LPs, then CD) were some of my favorite of his live recordings. I just noticed that Amazon is releasing a limited edition 5 CD set with the additional disk consisting of an amateur reel-to-reel recording from a February 4, 1968 Winterland show. Anyone (Lon?) heard this stuff before?
  8. Nice piece in the SF Chron
  9. As romantic as manned space flight sounds, these robotic flights to distant planets are MUCH more scientifically sound. How about those Mars rovers? They were only supposed to last for 3 months. One just died, but the other one is still going ... 7 YEARS later!
  10. RIP, Eddie. He drummed for nearly every touring artist I saw at the Keystone Korner in the 70s. Very sorry to see him pass on.
  11. Giants.........stick a fork in 'em. Oh, well, it was nice while it lasted.
  12. Watching those videos, it seems as though our friend, Mr. Wilson, has some "issues" he's trying to work through.
  13. Got tix to see him in Oct w/José James vocals, Chris Potter tenor saxophone, Gerald Cannon bass, Joe Farnsworth drums. They're "revisiting" the Coltrane/Hartman album.
  14. Ha! I never noticed that.
  15. New Blu-ray edition
  16. I like that Adorama portfolio site. Very cool. So are you shooting actual film? I'm not aware of any Voigtlander digital cameras. That'a very gutsy, considering the current technology.
  17. Is anyone from the original Yardbirds left other than the bassist and drummer? The current lineup includes McCarty(d) and Dreja(g). They've put out a few albums recently that aren't half-bad, surprisingly enough.
  18. Going to see Dave Alvin on Saturday.
  19. How about Jazz Crusaders? BTW, should someone tell them how to spell "Regularly"? [update: looks like someone did]
  20. GUNther Schuller
  21. I think we're talking about the NY Times, aren't we?
  22. He's going to be playing here in the upcoming SF Jazz Festival Fall Season. I should probably get tix.
  23. I don't remember a "jazz" listing in the Sunday Times - it's usually lumped in with "Pop", IIRC. As kh said, it's the Friday paper that has the listings.
