  1. I didn't realize you could still buy CD players. I thought they were all "disk" players now.
  2. Tinariwen tomorrow night. Saw them last year, too - good show.
  3. Saw Brendan Benson last night. One of the more underrated power pop artists on the circuit these days. His new album on his new label is worth checking out. BTW, if you aren't familiar with him, he's also the other "half" of The Raconteurs.

Good catch on the "pillow concert"! As you can see, that concert was in the gym at UCSB. So if you were going to sit on the floor instead of the bleachers, you could bring pillows. Yes, people SAT through the concert (IIRC).

Are those your ticket stubs? Yes, they are!
  6. That album RAWWWWWWWWWWWWWWKS!
  7. I think Silversun is better to listen to than watch. There are a couple of tunes on YouTube they did recently for Jimmy Kimmel and they aren't very interesting. They're most frequently compared to Smashing Pumpkins, who I never got into. Also, this set works as a 'whole album' - song to song. Unusual these days.
  8. I'm liking the new Silversun Pickups album. I thought their last album was pretty good, but ultimately didn't hold up all that well for me. On "Neck of the Woods," their sound hasn't changed radically, but the songwriting has become more complex and interesting - less groove-driven, if anything. I'm posting it here because they're definitely a little proggy, which I hadn't grasped before! Check it out.
  9. Yoshi's Oakland - great! Same night as Jimmy Cobb's So What band at Yoshi's SF.
  10. That Turser DOES look nice! Nice case, too.
  11. I think I saw him hit #656 (with the Mets) in San Diego on 6-16-73. If not that game, I'm pretty certain I saw another game in that series. [being 39 years ago, the memory is pretty fuzzy]
  12. FWIW, Bruce Lundvall is still on board as "chairman emeritus."
  13. Seems to me I read that one of the Cowsills is part of the band that's backing the Beach Boys on their 50th anniversary tour. Susan Cowsill is a talented singer who regularly toured with Dwight Twilley and was in a band called the Continental Drifters. I think she still does quite a bit of back-up singing as well as fronting her own group.
  14. Was (not Was) released a handful of albums, mostly in the 80's, that were both creative and humorous. The earliest albums also featured guest vocalists like Frank Sinatra Jr, Mel Torme, and Doug Feiger (the Knack). They later settled on a regular duo of singers, Sir Harry Bowens and Sweet Pea Atkinson, both excellent soul/jazz singers. You can usually find these albums for cheap in the used bins - easily worth a few $$.
  15. About a year and a half ago I finally "got" Lucinda Williams. Since then, have seen her live twice and picked up a bunch of albums.
  16. Listening to Nick Drake's "Five Leaves Left" made me realize that there's a fair amount of classical influence on this album. No one has mentioned ELO, either. Especially the first album, when Roy Wood was still in the mix.
  17. A few have already mentioned Keith Emerson, but his first band (The Nice) released what I thought was a fairly successful crossover album "Five Bridges"
  18. No WAY!!!!
  19. What Free said, but I'm tired of celebrating your birthdays. You seem to have several every year. What's up with THAT???? Hope ya had a GREAT one anyway, Aggggggdgggggggggggigggggggggggggggcggggggggggggggkggggggggggg!
  20. Next time I discuss VIJF I'll go start my own thread, promise. Anyway, am definitely looking forward to The Cookers, and I'll start trying to figure out the ticket situation soon. Anyway, I happened to be listening to BBC Jazz Line-up and there was a short feature on the UK band Get the Blessing, which is sort of a jazz-rock hybrid -- a fair bit like Led Bib or Acoustic Ladyland. Interestingly, GTB claim to be heavily influenced by Ornette Coleman and Don Cherry, though I am having trouble hearing that. They mentioned they would be doing a North American tour, and sure enough they are coming to VIJF the week after The Cookers. Looks like another group I'll want to check out. Never heard of Get the Blessing, but Googled them and came up with their website. Sounds pretty cool. Got a touch of the Residents in their performance, apparently.
