It's been a long time since I listened to "Waves", but if I remember correctly the BB vocals are only a kind of chant, with variations on the letters "TM" on the tune of the same name. I had forgotten about Roger McGuinn's appearance, too.
  3. What ELSE is new, Conn? I hope you have at least upgraded your beer selection for tonight.
  4. I guess I just never cared for the tune.
  5. It's just too bad he included the hokey "Three Coins in the Fountain" - otherwise this would have been a much better album.
  6. There has been some discussion about this on other boards. I emailed eMusic myself about it. It does appear to be a Tzadik decision. I got no response from an email I sent to them.

For those who don't keep up with Mosaic, they just anounced a new "singles" program - single albums, that is. Coming in the first batch in April/May is: (MCD-1006) Charles Lloyd: Of Course, Of Course This album was recorded in May 1964 and March 1965, after Charles had left the Chico Hamilton fold, so these sessions were a welcome reunion for Gabor Szabo and him. The recording group was completed by another extraordinarily empathetic team, Ron Carter and Tony Williams. Bringing two of the most creative pairings in jazz together makes for a hell of a quartet. The album is as cohesive as it is varied. For this disc, the album was newly remixed from the original four-track tapes and includes three bonus tracks approved by the artist.
  9. The Robert Plant "Dreamland" album looks interesting - especially for $1.99. A rave review from AMG, anyway. For you Zep fans, if you don't already have "How the West Was Won", this is a great time to pick it up. Probably their best live album.
  10. Wow. Bill Graham sure knew how to book 'em, didn't he? Talk about an inspired lineup!
  11. Finally watched the whole thing last night. Very interesting to see Cecil expound on music, art, etc......and WHATever. The guy's INsane, no doubt about that - but in a GOOD way. OTOH, I found the editing to be very frustrating. I don't think the director had a clue about how he/she wanted to present this. It seems to jump around from one thing to another without a clear direction. I felt that I could have learned much more about CT with a better vision.
  12. Yeah.....noticed that one.....aftrer the fact. Can't seem to delete this thread, though.
  13. Interesting piece on NPR this morning with the guy who bought and started "Wolfgang's Vault" - a huge collection of music, photos, posters, etc from the Bill Graham estate. Worth listening to. Vault Radio, Offering Fresh Blasts from the Past Here's the site, itself: Wolfgang's Vault
  14. Not originally from Texas, but Craig Handy attended North Texas State University (1981-1984).
  15. Nope. That's a GOOD thing!
  16. Kind of a low-key night last night. The usual suspects included Aggie, Conn, SS1, wesbed, White Lightening and myself (sorry if I left someone off). Mobley's "Hi Voltage" was the highlight album of the night, while "Mingus Ah Um" had mixed enthusiasm from the crowd. We closed with Byrd's "New Perspective" which I don't have but have been "encouraged" to get. Meanwhile........anyone (other than Wes) think that Billy Higgins is the 'poor man's Elvin Jones'?
  17. Looks interesting, but I think I prefer "Live at the Half Note"--Blue Note records.
  18. Man, this concept opens up a whole new can 'o' worms on reissue possibilities. Kinda scary. I have "Of Course, Of Course" on vinyl and it's nice to see that it's finally going to see the light of day on CD.
  19. Saw the Mingus Big Band last night at Yoshi's. GREAT MF show! If you ever get a chance to see this outfit (in whatever incarnation they're in), go see them. Craig Handy runs a fun show that's got everything from dazzling solos to Ku-umba Frank Lacy vocals. Also impressive and worthy of wider recognition: Lauren Sevian - bari sax (the only female I'm aware of on the instrument) George Colligan - piano (where has THIS guy been hiding??!) Honorable mention for Jack Walrath as the token Mingus alumnus. Would have liked to hear more than just the one solo he took at the end of the show. BTW - at dinner in the Yoshi's dining room we sat next to a table with Sue Mingus, Frank Lacy, John Handy (Craig's uncle) and Craig's mother (who was introduced during the show). Very entertaining in itself.

Just got a copy of the "Trio and Quintet" Conn. Haven't listened to the whole thing yet, but so far it sounds pretty sweet. AMG gave it 5 stars, which is unusual. I'm liking what I'm hearing.
  21. I've had an LP of "First Flight" forEVER. I've always enjoyed it and thought it was a really strong blowing date.
  22. That's EXCELLENT! Maybe I'll finally get to see them. I wasn't able to get to either of the events last year. Hopefully, some of those will be on the West Coast.
  23. Just got a copy of "In My Time" Oh, MAN......the opening cut made the hair on the back of my neck stand on end! This is an amazing set of music. And from a guy his age (88!) it's even MORE astounding. RUN (don't walk) to pick this up. You won't be disappointed - I'm not.
  24. I'm sure (as a Jew), Zorn doesn't like you trashing his music project, either. But you ARE entitled to you opinion, sir.
