  1. He could play. One of those unsung cats – recorded with Stitt, Gene Ammons, Al Haig, Hank Mobley etc.. Nice CD as leader w. Hank Jones. Joel Fass often mentioned him when he was here. Loss all round. Q

  8. I have "Over the Rainbow" from the Jazztone (included on Oscar Pettiford's "First Bass" CD) and it has some of the best Lucky I have heard, with excellent Dennard. I'll certainly track the rest of this down. The Tangier CD is very good. Dennard was a fine, fine pianist. Q
  9. Sorry, but as this subject came up, it should be said that Recovered Memory Therapies, upon which his daughter's allegations are based, are today viewed with considerable suspicion. Families have been destroyed by such allegations and subsequent legal actions have resulted in penalties against some of the doctors concerned. Kenton's daughter's psychiatrist, Dr. Joyce Martin, worked with RD Laing and others in London in the 60's, treating patients (including Leslie Kenton) with small doses of LSD to recover suppressed memories. Dr. Martin has also published research (available online) claiming to have successfully cured men of homosexuality using LSD based therapies. According to the Royal College of Psychiatrists (1997): Psychiatrists are advised to avoid engaging in any "memory recovery techniques" which are based upon the expectation of past sexual abuse of which the patient has no memory. Such...techniques may include drug-mediated interviews ["truth serum"], hypnosis, regression therapies, guided imagery, "body memories," literal dream interpretation, and journaling. There is no evidence that the use of consciousness-altering techniques, such as drug-mediated interviews or hypnosis, can reveal or accurately elaborate factual information about any past experiences, including sexual abuse ... 10. Unable to play video. What did he do - shave his head? Q
  11. Tom Harrell mentioned this in a recent interview with Ethan Iverson on "Do the Math". I can see why. This is vocal only, but the scatting is as good as it gets. With Kenny Drew, George Morrow, Philly Joe ... Q
  12. Results? (Thinking of doing that myself) Q

  18. You're looking at a 10 year time span (78's finished 1953/4) and "There's No You" was from 1944. Nice song - Jo Stafford did it in 1945, and it was fairly well covered by jazz people after that (though almost forgotten today). Body and Soul was done by everybody. Any clues? Who does the vocal/ clarinet/ group sound like? Swing/ bop influence? If it was private, as Jim mentions, there's no way to track it ... Q.
  19. They said he was the 'the missing link between Charlie Parker and Ornette Coleman'. I said that was nonsense. Q
  20. I've heard similar nonsense said about Ernie Henry. People who say that get elements of sound mixed up with the line. Q
  21. Just received this update and find I have lost some music files despite taking precautions per the instructions. Also my PC refuses to wake up in the morning - I have to reboot (apparently there is a fix in the works for this).
  22. Another Konitz/ strings effort is Ralph Burns’ “Free Forms”, on Clef from 1952. This has some surprisingly good Lee on several tracks, against an incongruous, overly cute strings/ woodwinds background - his astringency cuts through the syrup. It would have been interesting to hear what listed drummer Jo Jones had to say about this session. Q.
