Billy Higgins - Bridgework (Contemporary). Nice LP made up from a couple of different dates. One session has Harold Land and Buster Williams and the other has James Clay and Tony Dumas. I had Billy sign my copy when I saw him play with Charles Lloyd at the Regattabar shortly before he died. What a nice guy to talk to and a great drummer. I miss this guy a lot.

This is the Black & White label Clifford was referring to:

I've never seen that label before, but how is that not more or less Frank Lowe?

Also interesting (such as it is) that Billy Harper had the inaugural releases for both Black Saint & Soul Note.

Lowe is a good bet, but I also thought there was an outside chance it could be Ayler:

Here's Lowe again:

I did notice that Harper had the inaugural releases for both Black Saint and Soul Note, and I thought that was putting a lot of reliance on one artist by a new label. That distinction has helped widen my perspective on, and appreciation of, Harper. And he did turn out some really fine albums for them.

Between 1973 (Capra Black) & 1995 (Somalia), Billy Harper did a lot of good records for a lot of different labels - none of them American (why that is...I don't know. I have suspicions, but that's all they are). It's one of the most easily-overlooked legacies in this music, really, because America, by and large, just didn't get presented with it (and till hasn't been). But it's there, still, on MPS, Denon, Baystate, Black Saint/Soul Note, Marge, PojJazz, and a little later, Steeplechase.

Still going strong too, Billy Harper is. Long may he continue.

I heard Billy Harper a month ago in Detroit with David Weiss' band The Cookers and he had lost nothing off his fastball. It's not necessarily to my taste in some ways -- that's not really the way I would want to play -- but it's honest and real and, Lord knows, now more than ever we need as much of those qualities as possible in art.

Interesting - didn't realise that it had a US issue on Riverside ! Sonics on the Tempo are (predictably) lovely.

Even the Japanese reissue`s of these Tempo`s ( mastered from an old UK original album) are beautiful.

I've A/B'd one of the Jazz Couriers Sawanos against a Tempo original. The Tempo original has the bigger sound/more bloom/more presence but the Sawano compared pretty well. Agree that they are excellent - and pretty amazing considering they are needle drops. The flipback sleeves are also a work of art !
