golfcrazy1984 Posted January 4, 2012 Report Posted January 4, 2012 Scored the Basie live Roulette off of ebay for a non-extortionary price. Up to disc 3. I think the whole apartment complex is swinging via osmosis. Congrats!!! That's a hell of a set, and you'll be playing that for years! Quote
take5 Posted January 4, 2012 Report Posted January 4, 2012 Yeah it's pretty great. I'm not as big a Mosaic nut as some of you guys, I only have/want a few things from my very favorite artists and certainly that includes the Count. I was actually originally looking for the studio set but, dear god, a man's gotta pay the rent. I will, however, kindly be accepting donations to this ever-so-important cause... Quote

take5 Posted January 4, 2012 Report Posted January 4, 2012 That Sarah Vaughan set- I've been on the fence. I love Sarah but I don't like it when they smother her in strings and sometimes these box sets are loaded with a billion alternate takes and what-not which don't make for fun listening for singers, IMO. IIRC these sessions include the Sarah+2 which is an amazing album though... is the bulk of that set more of what I like or not? Quote

IIRC these sessions include the Sarah+2 which is an amazing album though... is the bulk of that set more of what I like or not? I have the set, and I LOVE Sarah Vaughan, but the set sits unplayed mostly. The Sarah+2 is remarkable!!! Also, the sound quality and booklet are SUPERB. There is a lot of Sarah and strings singing pretty syrupy songs.... The disk with Basie and Sassy is very good and an big improvement over the 1990s release, sound wise. Also the disk with Quincy Jones arrangements is great as well. With that said, I don't regret buying it.Listening to the Thad Jones Mosaic, Disk 2, "Going off Stage". Thad is great (arrangements and horn playing), the bands are tight, and what else can you say???? Quote
king ubu Posted January 4, 2012 Report Posted January 4, 2012 I'm into disc five now... rather sharp contrast between "Soulfully" and the singles just after that... but I love all of you, ahm, it... I can fully endorse any negative comments though - but hey, it's darn Sarah Vaughan and her voice is the voice of angels (at least when she sings, seems when she talked it wasn't...) Quote

golfcrazy1984 Posted January 10, 2012 Report Posted January 10, 2012 Complete Jimmie Lunceford Sessions Disk 4, I am really digging the musicianship and sound quailty that Andreas Meyer got on this set. I am really wondering what is going on with the Coleman Hawkins box set??!?! But I just got the shipping notice that the Chu Berry set will be mine soon!!! I can't wait. Quote

Clunky Posted January 22, 2012 Report Posted January 22, 2012 Jimmie Lunceford- disc 3. Sound better than could reasonably be expected and so much better than LP transfers of this material that I have. Quote

Well, this is the first spin for me after receiving this in the mail from a fellow board member. I'm enjoying what I'm hearing and quite happy to have made the purchase. The personnel on these dates, top notch. Quote

golfcrazy1984 Posted January 23, 2012 Report Posted January 23, 2012 Love the Basie Clef/Verve set! Especially the small group sides I have been listening to a little of the Ahmad Jamal set and a little of the Roy Eldridge set. I feel lucky to have this music! The Jamal is so classic, and of course the drive of Little Jazz, I am feeling inspired! Quote
