This box set arrived here one and a half hours ago - Jazz Messengers still had a few copies, and after doing some unexpected sales of rare books I decided to get me one. Listening to a track or two from each session. Much good music to hear. The Johnny Hartmann session in particular.

This goes down as Not Enjoying.

I went to listen to the McCoy Tyner Select and couldn’t find it; I searched high and low.  Then a thought hit me: maybe I thought I bought it (I’m convinced I did) but actually didn’t. Unfortunately, the would be profit takers have jacked up the price so I will have to wait or purchase the individual albums separately.

Consistently swinging music worthy of enjoyment at any time, place, and/or occasion. But the only two people on these 3 discs who consistently get me out of the occasion and into the musical moment are Jimmy Giuffre & Jim Hall. That's no surprise, they've been doing that to me for years now.

Brookmeyer's original liner notes, though....knowing him today as he would become known, they're sometimes..."hmmmm…"-ish. But that has no bearing on the music, especially if you only look at them once!

The Columbia Jazz Piano Moods Sessions (CD, Compilation, Remastered) album cover

Listened to Errol Garner, Amad Jamal (in the trio with Ray Crawford), Earl Hines, and Joe Bushkin, and everything worked for me!

A great box!

Thanks ! It’s a box which is really full of vitality, which I don’t play anywhere near enough.
