jazzbo Posted December 26, 2010 Report Posted December 26, 2010 The Lionel Hampton, it's lifting my mood. Quote
golfcrazy1984 Posted December 27, 2010 Report Posted December 27, 2010 The Classic Artie Shaw Bluebird and Victor Sessions. ALL DAY. I've neglected it in favor of the Benny Goodman set for too long. Great set, and the sound is fine, but not like the Malcolm Addey remastered Benny Goodman set. Quote
brownie Posted December 29, 2010 Report Posted December 29, 2010 The Andrew Hill Solo Select, disc 1 (disc 2 will be next...) Quote
golfcrazy1984 Posted December 30, 2010 Report Posted December 30, 2010 Classic Columbia and Okeh Benny Goodman Orchestra Sessions Disks 5-7 today. Being a lifelong Ellington and Basie fanatic, I am shocked how much I LOVE this whole box set. Benny is amazing and every incarnation of his band is TIGHT and SWINGIN'. I listen to this set often. Bluesnik Posted December 30, 2010 Report Posted December 30, 2010 the verve gerry mulligan concert jazz band sessions. it's very good with lots of big or medium band playing. Quote
miles65 Posted December 30, 2010 Report Posted December 30, 2010 The Ellington Bigband Set disc V. Just a few highlights: Porto Rican Chaos, Cotton, Reminiscing In Tempo and Echoes Of Harlem Quote
golfcrazy1984 Posted December 31, 2010 Report Posted December 31, 2010 I listened to a little Lionel Hampton (Hodges, and Benny Carter), Count Basie Roulette Studio Recordings (gotta love that SAXOPHONE section!) and a little Benny Goodman Sessions (Clarinade in particular). I am really looking forward to splurging on a new Mosaic set soon and have my eyes on a few that I missed out on as they went out of print. Quote
golfcrazy1984 Posted January 1, 2011 Report Posted January 1, 2011 While doing some editing work on a book before a New Years gig I am listening to Dizzy Gillespie disk #2. St. Louis blues! They are cookin'! I will be spending some time listening to the new Ellington big set tomorrow, as I haven't been enjoying it as much as I thought. Am I being to nearsighted listening to Mosaic records exclusively? I really haven't listened to much else recently... Quote
golfcrazy1984 Posted January 3, 2011 Report Posted January 3, 2011 The Complete Lionel Hampton Victor Sessions (1937-1941). Disk 1 (probably all disks today). This was the first set that I got after a Mosaic hiatus of a few years. Now I'm back to large orders, maybe I should ship them to the office.... Quote
golfcrazy1984 Posted January 4, 2011 Report Posted January 4, 2011 Duke Ellington Small Groups Disk 6. I return to this set often. This music is straight from the heart. Looking forward to spending more time with the Ellington big band set this week I broke down and ordered several OOP Mosaics from Amazon sellers that I missed out on back in the day. Buck Clayton CBS Jam Sessions, HRS Sessions and The Classic Capitol Sessions (not sure why I didn't get them originally) I paid $75 for the Buck Clayton, $179 for the Capitol and $150 for the HRS... I know it's a chunk of change but this music's gonna be GREAT and I will be in Mosaic heaven for the next few weeks Quote
golfcrazy1984 Posted January 4, 2011 Report Posted January 4, 2011 Oliver Nelson disk 2 at work. Increasing productivity Quote
golfcrazy1984 Posted January 5, 2011 Report Posted January 5, 2011 Ellington Reprise set. Disk 4. "Second time around." I haven't listened to this for awhile, Johnny Hodges is the sensual ballad master. Things REALLY ain't they way they used to be. Nobody plays this way anymore. Sad. Quote
golfcrazy1984 Posted January 5, 2011 Report Posted January 5, 2011 I listened to disk 4 from the Lester Young set, and am now listening to Hank Mobley disk 1. Can not get over Hank's Prank! Now that's jazz! Quote
golfcrazy1984 Posted January 7, 2011 Report Posted January 7, 2011 (edited) Newly acquired CBS Buck Clayton Jam Sessions (MD6-144) 0483/5000. CD's were still sealed, box and booklet were in great shape!!! Sooo excited. I've listened to the first disk and can tell, while this won't be revelatory, it will be music to sit back to with my feet tapping and a glass of scotch in my hand. ghost of miles Posted January 8, 2011 Report Posted January 8, 2011 I regret having missed that Clayton set. Right now: the Roy Eldridge Verve box. Marvelous music to be heard here! Quote
golfcrazy1984 Posted January 8, 2011 Report Posted January 8, 2011 I regret having missed that Clayton set. Right now: the Roy Eldridge Verve box. Marvelous music to be heard here! Well, I missed the Eldridge set! I'm thinking of getting an OOP set. He's one of my favorite trumpet players and the variety in that set seems really appealing. Esp. the Benny Carter and Dizzy Gillespie sides. Quote
jeffcrom Posted January 9, 2011 Report Posted January 9, 2011 The new Ellington, disc three. I'm really enjoying this, and learning a lot. And I just love the Mills Brothers, who guest on disc three - I didn't really begin to appreciate them until a couple of years ago. Quote
golfcrazy1984 Posted January 9, 2011 Report Posted January 9, 2011 Sonny Stitt Complete Roost Recordings, Disk 7. I come back to this set often if I want swingin', straight-ahead, saxophone. Love Malcolm Addey's remastering, these sessions sound great Now, when will the Lunceford Mosaic come out? Patience....it's on the second week of the new year.... Quote

golfcrazy1984 Posted January 10, 2011 Report Posted January 10, 2011 Listening to The Complete CBS Buck Clayton Jam Sessions disk 1. It's nice to hear Charlie Fowlkes' great tone in a small group setting, instead of anchoring the Basie sax section. I had never heard Lem Davis (alto sax) play before and it's nice to hear what he's about too. I NEED to listen to something else than Mosaics....probably 3 weeks straight. But then again, I paid good money for 'em, might as well get some enjoyment out of 'em! Quote

Nice strong tone, good early R&B'ish ideas, and probably a better player than he got credit for.SOOOOO The Classic Capitol Jazz Sessions came in the mail last night, everything is in GREAT shape and I paid a little less than the set retailed for new. Good deal! The sound quality is superb, and the variety is staggering (in a good way ). I am listening to disk one now---this is going to be a VALUED set, so unlike most Mosaic sets. BTW, I will be getting the Mosaic HRS sessions in the mail today, and hopefully I can be disciplined and listen to that when I'm finished with the Capitol set. Quote
