ghost of miles Posted July 2, 2004 Report Posted July 2, 2004 I just noticed that our newest member is John Litweiler, author of two outstanding books on jazz, THE FREEDOM PRINCIPLE: JAZZ AFTER 1958, and ORNETTE COLEMAN: A HARMOLODIC LIFE. John, welcome! Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted July 3, 2004 Report Posted July 3, 2004 John is one of my closest friends - since 1966. I hope he decides to post. Mr. Weiler, the floor is yours. Quote
JSngry Posted July 3, 2004 Report Posted July 3, 2004 John Litweiler, Chuk Nessa, and Larry Kart all on the same board? HELL YEAH!!!! Quote
Spontooneous Posted July 3, 2004 Report Posted July 3, 2004 What's next? A dress code? 'Cause if y'all keep classin' up the place like this, guys like me is gonna get throwed out. But seriously...Welcome, John! Quote
jazzbo Posted July 3, 2004 Report Posted July 3, 2004 (edited) Thank goodness I've got a few dozen ties (one owned by Jerome Richardson, thanks Jim!) Welcome! Edited October 3, 2004 by jazzbo Quote
chris olivarez Posted July 3, 2004 Report Posted July 3, 2004 Welcome John but I'm not going to wear a tie. Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted July 3, 2004 Report Posted July 3, 2004 Welcome John but I'm not going to wear a tie. In 35+ years I have not seen John in a tie - maybe he puts one on for a job interview. Quote
Rooster_Ties Posted July 3, 2004 Report Posted July 3, 2004 Wow!!! Welcome John!!! Good to have you on board!!!!! Quote
ghost of miles Posted July 3, 2004 Author Report Posted July 3, 2004 John is one of my closest friends - since 1966. I hope he decides to post. Mr. Weiler, the floor is yours. Chuck, is John still the director of the Jazz Institute of Chicago? Quote
Jazzmoose Posted July 3, 2004 Report Posted July 3, 2004 Wow...this sounds too good to be true! Quote
Larry Kart Posted July 3, 2004 Report Posted July 3, 2004 I wonder sometimes about the fact that John, Terry, Chuck and I all became friends at about the same time and have stayed that way. On the one hand, it seems quite natural -- we were all living in Chicago (John, Terry, and I in the same neighborhood: Hyde Park), and we were all interested in a lot of the same things, musically and otherwise. But what I can't explain or account for is how smart/good-at-it/kindhearted they are. BTW, Terry's writing on jazz needs to get between covers; he's brilliant, unique, and not that well-known because a lot of his stuff was written for Jazz and Blues Monthly in the '60s when he lived in England (e.g. best account ever of Art Pepper's music, and diamond-cutter essays about Ornette and Coleman Hawkins). And there's a large body of John's work (reviews, liner notes, etc.) that needs to be collected. The other day I was reading the notes he wrote to a fine late Ben Webster album that Chuck put out -- great heart and insight; the notes are like a solo themselves. There's lots more of that. Quote
brownie Posted July 3, 2004 Report Posted July 3, 2004 When I was still subscribing to Down Beat back in the '7Os, I remember reading the John Litweiler articles and reviews. Good ones. He is more than welcome here! And hope he will post often. Quote
mikeweil Posted July 3, 2004 Report Posted July 3, 2004 Welcome John but I'm not going to wear a tie. In 35+ years I have not seen John in a tie - maybe he puts one on for a job interview. I too swore I NEVER will wear a tie - and then I got two (beautiful ones) as birthday presents ..... But John's example encourages me to stick to my ideals. I'll wear dark glasses with the ties so nobody's recognizes me. If anybody needs to borrow a tie, I guess Rooster Ties will gladly help you out ..... Welcome to the board, Mr. Litweiler, always enjoyed your articles! Quote
Dan Gould Posted July 3, 2004 Report Posted July 3, 2004 If I'm not mistaken, one of Litweiler's '70s DB pieces that should be required reading is an interview/profile of Hank Mobley. Welcome! Quote
David Ayers Posted July 3, 2004 Report Posted July 3, 2004 Welcome John! I bought your book when it first came out and bought (almost) every album you listed religiously. And all the ones you dissed I never bought. Thanks for the heads up on all that music! At that time there was little information (at least here in England) and the records were quite hard to find too - in fact I still haven't found them all! You did a great job in describing and recommending that music. Quote
paul secor Posted July 5, 2004 Report Posted July 5, 2004 I have fond memories of 1970's Down Beat articles by John Litweiler on Archie Shepp and Cecil Taylor, and of his liner notes for Hank Mobley's A Slice of the Top and Third Season. (Actually, the latter two aren't just memories, since they're on my shelves.) I hope that he'll post when the time is right. Until then - welcome, Mr. Litweiler. Quote
Lazaro Vega Posted July 7, 2004 Report Posted July 7, 2004 John wrote some insightful liner notes for the new Von Freeman recording on Premonition. He certainly is a writer I trust and look forward to reading. Quote
.:.impossible Posted July 7, 2004 Report Posted July 7, 2004 Fantastic news. I look forward to reading some interesting exchanges! Quote
brownie Posted July 9, 2004 Report Posted July 9, 2004 Now that this room is ready for him, wish John Litweiler will come out from behind the curtains where he seems to have confined himself and make his entrance! We all can learn from him! Quote
Guest Chaney Posted July 9, 2004 Report Posted July 9, 2004 Sorry, but I have to ask: Does anyone know if the person who registered as John Litweiler is, in fact, John Litweiler? Quote
dave9199 Posted July 10, 2004 Report Posted July 10, 2004 Maybe DEEP is trying to get back on the board looking for some respect this time around. Quote
couw Posted July 10, 2004 Report Posted July 10, 2004 Sorry, but I have to ask: Does anyone know if the person who registered as John Litweiler is, in fact, John Litweiler? maybe it's Clint Eastwood Quote
