I wonder sometimes about the fact that John, Terry, Chuck and I all became friends at about the same time and have stayed that way. On the one hand, it seems quite natural -- we were all living in Chicago (John, Terry, and I in the same neighborhood: Hyde Park), and we were all interested in a lot of the same things, musically and otherwise. But what I can't explain or account for is how smart/good-at-it/kindhearted they are. BTW, Terry's writing on jazz needs to get between covers; he's brilliant, unique, and not that well-known because a lot of his stuff was written for Jazz and Blues Monthly in the '60s when he lived in England (e.g. best account ever of Art Pepper's music, and diamond-cutter essays about Ornette and Coleman Hawkins). And there's a large body of John's work (reviews, liner notes, etc.) that needs to be collected. The other day I was reading the notes he wrote to a fine late Ben Webster album that Chuck put out -- great heart and insight; the notes are like a solo themselves. There's lots more of that.

When I was still subscribing to Down Beat back in the '7Os, I remember reading the John Litweiler articles and reviews. Good ones.

He is more than welcome here!

And hope he will post often.

Welcome John but I'm not going to wear a tie.

In 35+ years I have not seen John in a tie - maybe he puts one on for a job interview. :)

I too swore I NEVER will wear a tie - and then I got two (beautiful ones) as birthday presents ..... But John's example encourages me to stick to my ideals. I'll wear dark glasses with the ties so nobody's recognizes me. If anybody needs to borrow a tie, I guess Rooster Ties will gladly help you out .....

Welcome to the board, Mr. Litweiler, always enjoyed your articles!

Welcome John! I bought your book when it first came out and bought (almost) every album you listed religiously. And all the ones you dissed I never bought. Thanks for the heads up on all that music! At that time there was little information (at least here in England) and the records were quite hard to find too - in fact I still haven't found them all! You did a great job in describing and recommending that music.

I have fond memories of 1970's Down Beat articles by John Litweiler on Archie Shepp and Cecil Taylor, and of his liner notes for Hank Mobley's A Slice of the Top and Third Season. (Actually, the latter two aren't just memories, since they're on my shelves.)

I hope that he'll post when the time is right. Until then - welcome, Mr. Litweiler.

Now that this room is ready for him, wish John Litweiler will come out from behind the curtains where he seems to have confined himself and make his entrance!

We all can learn from him!

Sorry, but I have to ask: Does anyone know if the person who registered as John Litweiler is, in fact, John Litweiler?

John Litweiler has posted a few messages in the Yahoo "Chicago Improvised Music List" during the past 2 years:

Part of his email address can be seen on Yahoo, if the same address was used here we can assume it's him.
