GregK Posted March 16, 2005 Report Posted March 16, 2005 Chuck, what do you think of the Art Ensemble discs in this series? I think I will skip the With Fontella Bass one, but the other two look interesting Quote
Chalupa Posted March 16, 2005 Report Posted March 16, 2005 (edited) I just ordered the AEOC - Phase One, Emergency - Homage to Peace, and the Frank Wright. Hope I don't get a backordered message Edited March 16, 2005 by Chalupa Quote
clifford_thornton Posted March 16, 2005 Report Posted March 16, 2005 Y'know, I always liked the original covers, but now seeing the reissues and their splotchy funk in the stores, they actually do look really nice. It is kind of hard to believe that this is getting such heavy treatment, but I'm glad they are. Now if someone would just do the BYG and ESP back catalogs right... Quote
Brandon Burke Posted March 16, 2005 Report Posted March 16, 2005 (edited) Greg, the AEoC titles are all very good but Certain Blacks holds a special place in my heart. Mostly because of "One for Jarman" which has made its way onto just about every jazz mixtape I've made in the past ten or twelve years. A really beautiful piece.... Said it before but I'm very happy to see these titles back on the racks. Lot's of great music. Edited March 16, 2005 by Brandon Burke Quote
king ubu Posted March 16, 2005 Report Posted March 16, 2005 Y'know, I always liked the original covers... Not knowing how the original releases looked, I assume the CD slipcases represent the original front covers, yes? But the back is not what they looked like on the backside, originally? ubu Quote
Guest Chaney Posted March 16, 2005 Report Posted March 16, 2005 That is a pretty good price from CDUniverse. Hmmm, I was just planning an order from Alldirect, however. I wonder if they'll eventually stock these. Any thoughts? Too outside of the mainstream? (They do carry some BYG/Sunspots titles ... ). I just looked for the Free America series at AllDirect and couldn't even find them listed. If they were offering these titles, that's apparently come to an end. I was going to suggest that folks run over to Deep Discount CD and try to pick up the disks which CD Universe has on backorder but I noticed this for all Free America CDs: * Usually ships within 10 days. You will not be billed for pre-orders or out of stock items until your order is shipped. Quote
jazzbo Posted March 16, 2005 Report Posted March 16, 2005 Clifford: Have you looked at ESP-Disk lately (www.espdisk.com) ? They are reissuing the ESP catalog. I've only bought two (items I didn't have in other formats) (the new Ayler and Heliocentric Worlds Vol. 3) and the sound is excellent. Quote
Chalupa Posted March 17, 2005 Report Posted March 17, 2005 I was in a local record store yesterday and saw that they had all of the titles in stock. I picked up the Dave Burrell disc, passing on the rest because of my order with DeepDiscount. Unfortunately, when I got home there was an email from DeepDiscount saying the 3 cds I ordered(AEOC- Phase One, Emergency, Frank Wright) had been backordered. Oh well at least i have the Burrell, which I like. Quote
Chalupa Posted March 17, 2005 Report Posted March 17, 2005 BTW, in case anyone is keeping track, my Burrell cd was stamped #2153. Quote
GregK Posted March 18, 2005 Report Posted March 18, 2005 I got Phase One (#1292), Certain Blacks (#2796), Braxton's Saxophone Improvs (#1481) and Donna Lee (#847), all at Borders. So far I'm really liking what I hear!! Quote
Д.Д. Posted March 18, 2005 Report Posted March 18, 2005 I am curious - does the US edition also have French liner notes (liner notes are quite so-so here, anyway)? Quote
GregK Posted March 18, 2005 Report Posted March 18, 2005 I am curious - does the US edition also have French liner notes (liner notes are quite so-so here, anyway)? Each one I have has french notes followed on the next page by English notes. Since I haven't read or spoken french since the late 80s, I can't say at first glance if the english notes are the direct translation or are a different set. Quote

So it looks like there is indeed a run of 5000 of these, and the US discs are part of that same run. I have no issues with the packaging at all, by the way. I like it! Quote
John B Posted March 18, 2005 Report Posted March 18, 2005 I went a bit overboard and got 12 of these. I'm going to begin listening to them today, starting with two of the Art Ensemble discs. Quote
Chalupa Posted March 18, 2005 Report Posted March 18, 2005 For our Philly area posters..... I just got back from the Tower Records on Broad & Chestnut. They have all 15 titles in stock with 5 or 6 copies of each. A little pricey at $18.99 + tax but they have 'em I got "Phase One" w/ "0666" stamped on the back. Hmm....... Quote
John B Posted March 18, 2005 Report Posted March 18, 2005 My copy of Certain Blacks is 3533. Either they are distributing them randomly or this title has been flying off the shelves. Quote
Jim Dye Posted March 19, 2005 Report Posted March 19, 2005 J & R online has them all for 11.99 right now. 21.99 for the double Braxton. www.jr.com Quote

Д.Д. Posted March 19, 2005 Report Posted March 19, 2005 So it looks like there is indeed a run of 5000 of these, and the US discs are part of that same run. 5000 is probably more than enough to satisfy demand for this sort of music globally. That's why I was sceptical about it being supposedly a Europe-only release when they just came out - 5000 is just too much for Europe alone... Quote

ejp626 Posted March 20, 2005 Report Posted March 20, 2005 I didn't realize the J & R prices were so good, but I did pick up the Shepp and Thornton CDs at Dusty Groove the other day. Definitely enjoying them. I really shouldn't get any more, but I may falter... Quote
Guest akanalog Posted March 20, 2005 Report Posted March 20, 2005 i have heard the thornton disc and i like it. is anything else in the series like this one? i like the thornton because it is a little out but the music is still held down by some steady grooving basslines. things never get out of control but it still has a nice edge. i enjoy the frank wright also but this is about as out as i want to get. i always enjoy hearing musicians i like in new setting so it was cool hearing art taylor do something different on this one. anything else in the series around this level? some of the others look interesting but i fear they will blow me out of the room. the bley interests me just because of my enjoyment of electric instruments but bley is not someone i generally enjoy so much plugged in. but yeah, anything around the thornton to wright level? thank you. Quote
clifford_thornton Posted March 20, 2005 Report Posted March 20, 2005 (edited) The Shepp that John B skipped, and both "Certain Blacks" and "with Fontella Bass" from the AEC would fit that bill nicely. The Rudd is pretty straight-ahead, too. The Shorter and the Lacys are probably the most 'out,' but not much more so than the Wright... And yes, Jazzbo, I did see the ESPs. Ellis Marsalis kinda threw me for a loop, but the Ayler and Ra stuff sounds great! Edited March 20, 2005 by clifford_thornton Quote
Guest akanalog Posted March 21, 2005 Report Posted March 21, 2005 the shepp and the AEC albums didn't really appeal to me much. i don't know why. i guess i have never really been interested in AEC albums. they don't move me. and the shepp looks like sort of a mess and i hate harmonica. well, hmmmm....i guess perhaps i should avoid this series of reissues. or i guess i will take a few risks.
