Of course, I've mentioned my absolute LOVE of "Phase One"

and I'm sorry to hear that the AEC didn't get their payment for "Certain Blacks",

but I'm wondering what folks think of the artwork on these releases.

Scribbles and splatterings all over the things that make 'em look just awful!

I had some of them in the seat next to me while driving the other evening

and I could hardly tell which was which when I looked over to change one out.

Y'know, I always liked the original covers, but now seeing the reissues and their splotchy funk in the stores, they actually do look really nice. It is kind of hard to believe that this is getting such heavy treatment, but I'm glad they are.

Now if someone would just do the BYG and ESP back catalogs right...

Greg, the AEoC titles are all very good but Certain Blacks holds a special place in my heart. Mostly because of "One for Jarman" which has made its way onto just about every jazz mixtape I've made in the past ten or twelve years. A really beautiful piece....

Said it before but I'm very happy to see these titles back on the racks. Lot's of great music.

That is a pretty good price from CDUniverse. Hmmm, I was just planning an order from Alldirect, however. I wonder if they'll eventually stock these. Any thoughts? Too outside of the mainstream? (They do carry some BYG/Sunspots titles ...  ).

I just looked for the Free America series at AllDirect and couldn't even find them listed. If they were offering these titles, that's apparently come to an end.

I was going to suggest that folks run over to Deep Discount CD and try to pick up the disks which CD Universe has on backorder but I noticed this for all Free America CDs:

* Usually ships within 10 days. You will not be billed for pre-orders or out of stock items until your order is shipped.

Not knowing how the original releases looked, I assume the CD slipcases represent the original front covers, yes? But the back is not what they looked like on the backside, originally?

These are different. I don't have any of my 4 or 5 copies of Phase One handy right now

and the closest thing I could find online was the picture that they used for the cover:

Well, after you take the outer wrap off, you'll have no info on the front cover.

I suppose that's OK in some circumstances - the artwork itself looks good, but it just doesn't work for me from a practical point of view...and wait til you get to the booklets!

Here, tell me which titles are these by looking at the covers:

Clifford: Have you looked at ESP-Disk lately (www.espdisk.com) ? They are reissuing the ESP catalog. I've only bought two (items I didn't have in other formats) (the new Ayler and Heliocentric Worlds Vol. 3) and the sound is excellent.

...and they're back in original hands!

I was in a local record store yesterday and saw that they had all of the titles in stock. I picked up the Dave Burrell disc, passing on the rest because of my order with DeepDiscount. Unfortunately, when I got home there was an email from DeepDiscount saying the 3 cds I ordered(AEOC- Phase One, Emergency, Frank Wright) had been backordered.

Oh well at least i have the Burrell, which I like.

I am curious - does the US edition also have French liner notes (liner notes are quite so-so here, anyway)?

Each one I have has french notes followed on the next page by English notes. Since I haven't read or spoken french since the late 80s, I can't say at first glance if the english notes are the direct translation or are a different set.

They are translations, yes.

So it looks like there is indeed a run of 5000 of these, and the US discs are part of that same run.

I have no issues with the packaging at all, by the way. I like it!

For our Philly area posters..... I just got back from the Tower Records on Broad & Chestnut. They have all 15 titles in stock with 5 or 6 copies of each. A little pricey at $18.99 + tax but they have 'em :)

I got "Phase One" w/ "0666" stamped on the back. Hmm.......

5000 is probably more than enough to satisfy demand for this sort of music globally. That's why I was sceptical about it being supposedly a Europe-only release when they just came out - 5000 is just too much for Europe alone...
