I saw them the week before last so I kind of know what to expect. Tomorrow night it will be Glass Triangle with Mette, Zeena Parkins & Ryan Sawyer. In Brooklyn.

yes it’s a very intense group. Very focused in the free jazz vernacular with a current/modernist vibe. Very technically proficient musicians who can be virtuosic yet they unleash big energy. Often the real technical virtuosos let their expertise rob energy from the music.

Looks very interesting to me. I like Mette and Zeena but don't know Ryan Sawyer. Can you ask them to come and play in London please Steve...

Ryan Sawyer is great. I’ve seen him play often over the years. Last time this past Spring with Nate Wooley’s Columbia Icefield with Ava Mendoza & the *great* Susan Alcorn.

Zeena is incredible especially on the electric harp which she will be playing tomorrow night with the abstract yet intense trio. One of the most unique trios I know of. Sawyer is a powerful drummer yet understands space and time. Kevin Reilly wouldn’t release a recording with a basher. It’s something he despises.

I’ll ask Kevin tonight if there is any way that trio will get to London in the future.

At Union Pool with Susan Alcorn & Patrick Holmes

Astounding

Last night was far greater than the set at The Stone

68 minute set. First 23 minute piece ended Can like almost. Ches channeling outer space limits. Second 18 minute piece more typically free jazz. Last 2 pieces were beyond category and Mette reached heights not previously deemed possible.

Tell me where I can find the podcast.

Ches is a brilliant dude. Great composer, thinker & one of the best drummers on the planet.

You should enjoy it. The pod is called "Spotlight On". Episode is from Aug 1. "Ches Smith & Shara Lunon: dismantling musical conventions"

Here's the Apple Podcast link:

While still a fun night of bari sax, I was pretty bummed out that both Charlie Kohlhase & Allan Chase came down with Covid and couldn't make the gig. Get well soon guys.

I was also a bit saddened to learn that Claire Daly couldn't make it because she is in the middle of a new treatment for her cancer.

Today is Bandcamp Friday - if you like bari sax, go check out Claire Daly's music there and buy something to try and throw a little love her way.

Spectacular 54 minute set comprised of 6 pieces.

all the musicians were great but Mary, Ches & the *great* William Winant destroyed atoms. Not sure I’ve heard Mary Halvorson play with so much fire & force. Power chords, slashing commentary and searing leads. Holy Moly.

Sullivan Fortner solo piano performance. Very impressive! I saw him supporting Cecile McLoren Salvant last year, and he was very good, but solo is a different animal.

Branford Marsalis Quartet (Joey Calderazzo on piano,Eric Revis on bass, and Justin Faulkner on drums) at the University of Texas at Dallas, on Sunday afternoon. The best playing/performance I've heard from Branford. A really excellent concert.

Last night at Solar Myth in Philadelphia

Nels Cline on guitar

Susan Alcorn on pedal steel guitar

Booker Stardum on drums (first time seeing him)

55 minute improv followed by 8-9 minute encore

maybe the best show of the year. Nels amazing but Susan Alcorn destroyed the universe. One of the greatest musicians on the planet.

Just saw Dave Young in a quintet at The Rex with Reg Schwager on guitar and Brian Dickinson on piano.  The first set they played quite a few of Young's originals.  The second set was mostly standards, like Blue in Green, some Cedar Walton tunes and then Gershwin's "I Loves You, Porgy."  I left a bit early as they were digging into another Cedar Walton tune, Shaky Jake.

Last night at Solar Myth:

Nels Cline, Greg Belisle-Chi, John Hebert & Chad Taylor

compositions

fine set but nowhere near the night before. Nels & Hebert were the stars. Greg a good foil but he still needs a way to go. Tough spot playing across from Nels Cline.

He’s only on the scene less than 5 years so hopefully he will continue to progress with Berne. I’ll see him & Hebert on Tuesday with Berne, Aurora Nealand & Tom Rainey.

The Artifacts Trio, at Oto last night. Fabulous concert, two concise sets, swinging as hell. Three great players/composers showcasing their own compositions and some by AACM masters, especially Steve McCall.

Nice chat with Mike Reed at half time too.

Tomorrow night -

Mat Maneri / Lucian Ban Duo

At Hallwalls

They were in Saugerties (NY) yesterday 10/20.

I think Cliff Peterson went. I saw the Lou Grassi (drums) Trio (with Michael Bisio on bass and Cécile Broché on violin) in Kingston instead. The 2 events overlapped (5 PM and 4 PM starting times) so one had to choose.

Yes, Sunday was a busy day. At 2:00 PM, I caught a straight ahead session in Athens presented by Planetarts.org.  Then I motored down the road to Kingston to hear the Grassi Trio. Unfortunately, that concert started 15 minutes late so I heard only 20 minutes or so.  Great stuff.  Then I drove back to Saugerties to see Ban and Maneri in support of their new ECM release, Transylvanian Dance. Ban's and Maneri's explanation of the research into Bartok's field recordings to prepare for the record was absorbing.  The music was engrossing.

Josephine Davies Satori last night at the Parrakeet Kentish Town. In Trio format and then joined by a pianist. Wow, what a tone on the tenor, especially at the lower end. Very interesting original compositions.

I'd have liked to make it to that. I saw Satori first about 3 years ago and was equally impressed, just a trio then. About a year ago I saw them with Alcyona Mick in piano, which was good but I missed the space of the trio music. The Satori trio albums are really good I think.

Davies is also very good in the Full Circle Quartet if you're interested.

I put Satori in my recent BFT here, got some interesting responses.
