Tomorrow night, first concert of Radiohead's European comeback tour:

Comprar entradas para Radiohead - Madrid en Madrid. Movistar Arena - Venta Oficial

A lot of expectations...

Man, I'm envious!  Let us know how it was!

You can easily judge by yourself 😜, as the full show is already available on YouTube (see below).

From my perspective, it was a good concert, particularly from a visual perspective, also sound wise. And with the plus of being sort of a mythical “comeback”.

From a musical standpoint, it was a good mix of pop-rock oriented songs (which I like most, particularly their first three discs) and those heavy rhythms and hypnotic electronic riffs, which, in the latter case, sounded too powerful and abstract for my taste. And no “Creep”, as expected.

All in all, I enjoyed the show. Although I would very much prefer a REM comeback 😜 (which is as likely as the return of the dinosaurs 🦕). BTW, the stadium was packed, and this was just the first of four shows in Madrid.

Thanks for sharing - I jumped around that video a bit and liked what I heard.  I think they're fascinating and have had an interesting evolution in their sound from the early albums to the more recent stuff.

Saw Mike Murley and Pat LaBarbera with Neil Swainson(!) at the Rex, playing the music of Joe Henderson.  Neil of course played with Joe, and apparently Pat studied with Joe for a few years in the 70s.  Joe even asked Pat to join his band, but on bass clarinet, and Pat declined.  Anyway, it was a very good couple of sets, ending in a rousing version of In N' Out.

Neil and Terry Clarke are playing with Kirk MacDonald at the end of the month at the Jazz Bistro and I'll try to make one of those sets as well.

I saw George Coleman at the Ragattabar in Cambridge, MA last night. At 90, George is having mobility issues but he can still blow that horn.

Great to see him still playing Kevin :)

I saw Gary Bartz last night in Rotterdam. Though some of the songs were a bit to smooth to my tastes and I didn’t enjoy the female singer, I am happy I managed to see him.

Enjoy that. I seriously considered going but I have a few other festival gigs lined up. I also haven't seen him in ages, possibly 30+ years

Who was in his band?

Marta Sanchez, piano (Spanish), Luke Stewart, bass, Chris Beck, drums. Not the advertised drummer, Russell Carter. Chris was a powerhouse. Also Francesca Cinelli, vocals, David’s partner. French I believe. David made some disparaging comments about his current (big) record label! I thought David was on strong form. I complemented him on his lung power at the interval, he said ‘it takes a lot of work’! Yes indeed.

Not live but part of the current London Jazz Festival, a double bill today at the Barbican: Big Ben, Ben Webster in Europe (1967) and Cecil Taylor a Paris (1968).

Last Thursday night, Mike LeDonne Trio at Blues Alley.

Friday night: First, Henry Threadgill, Vijay Iyer and Dafnis Prieto at 92ndNY.

Second, Artemis at Birdland.

Saturday night: Dave Holland/Chris Potter/Brian Blade at Dizzy's (Last minute substitutions for Azar Lawrence, who cancelled due to illness).

Second, Tyshawn Sorey Trio (Aaron Diehl and Harish Raghovan) at the Village Vanguard.

The indisputable best of this series of concerts were the Henry Threadgill concert and Tyshawn Sorey at the VV. Both were fantastic.

The Threadgill and Sorey trios are outstanding!

Only managed to make the final minutes of the first set Friday evening, but I stuck around for the second set, which was quite nice - 2 originals and 3 standards.  This was Kirk McDonald, Nancy Walker, Neil Swainson and Terry Clarke at the Jazz Bistro.

Sunday will probably see a bit of a pickup band at the Rex with Robert Lee and Allison Au.

Then next Sat., I'm heading over to Hirut (a relatively new to me jazz club in the East End).  It's going to be pianist Harold Danko, with saxophonist Pat LaBarbera, & bassist Neil Swainson.  Really looking forward to this and need to make sure I get there a bit early, as one time I was turned away!
