J.R. Monterose

In JR's "Iowa chapter" we were good friends. He'd pick me up in the morning in his red MG Midget and we'd go to the Airliner Lounge and drink 2 bloody marys then retire to his car parked across the street from the campus. He would watch the females and sip on his bottle of cough syrup.

Maybe more later, but Ann just announced dinner. :)

Chuck, isn't that the car pictured on the cover

of JRs Atlas album with Carl Fontana.

Anyone heard that album? Comments???

I assume it is long OOP like most of JRs work.

BTW, I don't believe I saw that album on Mike's

JR discography. Hmmmmmm

Speaking of Mike's discography I noticed mention of

a radio broadcast (late 1980's?) of JR along with Sal Nistico and

Todd Coolman on bass. Todd is now professor of jazz studies

at Purchase College as well as on the faculty of the Skidmore

Summer Jazz Institute. I'll have to ask him if he has a copy

of that material on tape.

The Monterose/Nistico broadcast exists and is circulating.

As for an Atlas issue by Monterose with Carl Fontana - I've never heard of such thing. Would love to know more - but I wonder if you might be confusing it with the album Fontana recorded with Bill Watrous. See Atlas listing here:

Yes, the broadcast with Sal is floating around.

Never heard of the Atlas disc either and I thought I had all of them at one time or another.

I doubt the Midget survived the trip to California.

Concerning the guitar, I think he played it in private to explore chords - cheaper and more mobile than a piano.

You are absolutely correct Mike.

My error. (Don't I feel dumb.......) :(

Hmmmm, anyone interested in sharing that JR & Sal tape???

Starting some preliminary work on a J.R. Monterose Night Lights program. I've already got JAYWALKIN', the Blue Note, THE MESSAGE, IN ACTION, and LIVE AT THE TENDER TRAP. Have the Charles, Mingus, Eardley, and Jazz Prophets material as well... and I think we may have the Munich on LP at the station. Any other recs from the dates listed in Mike's discography? Thanks much, as always.
