Never seen a Hammond organ on Lawrence Welk's show. The guy makes it sound horrible! :)

AWESOME!

That was profoundly disturbing. I think I need to take a shower.

Why are they all grinning like that? (Shitfaced?)

And why does the big sign suspended above the orchestra say "Dodge"?

And how in God's name do you make a majestic instrument like the Hammond sound so bad? (Maybe trying ever-so-hard not to upstage the accordions?)

In the early '90's Deems had a big band that played around the Chicago area. I subbed a couple of times in the band (I'm guessing FreeForAll may have as well). Some good players, and even though Deems was past his prime, he was still doing some swingin'. The front head on his bass drum was painted "Barrett Deems- World's Fastest Drummer."

Died in 1998, but some of his big band CDs are available here at CD Universe.

about Dave Tough - Deems described him as a real intellectual, involved in radical politics - also said that Tough's wife was black, and when Tough died his family refused to let her come to the funeral -

Tough was an amazing guy; not only one of the drum greats, but admired by a lot of people - I also once had a nice conversation about him with Max Roach, who recalled Tough sitting right in front of the drums as Roach played, trying to soak up the whole bebop thing. Max clearly loved the guy - I wish someone had done a more detailed interview with Roach about him -

Intriguing stuff. Thanks, Allen!

They make it sound like a novelty instrument. Time for a shower.

I have no answers to your questions, except the Dodge sign.

Dodge was obviously the sponsor of the horror show.

Having only dial up at home, when I go to the library I usually take a a few minutes out to watch a few things on YouTube.

Yesterday I saw an amusing clip of Manfred Mann from 1965. They were on a British Shindig-like show, lip-synching to Come Tomorrow. Two of the teenage girls were putting their hands all over Paul Jones and wouldn't leave him alone!

Don't know if this has been posted before, but Tristano at the Half Note in 1964 with Lee, Warne, Sonny Dallas, and Nick Stabulus, from the "Look Up and Live" broadcast:

Incredible stuff, Larry. Thanks so much!

Don't think I've ever seen film of Tristano before. I'll definitely be returning to those.
