Bright Moments Posted January 9, 2010 Report Posted January 9, 2010 (edited) nat king cole Really crazy! That slice on the box spine looks bad! This CD set usually sells in the $600 range. I really want to find this set - at a reasonable price! $600 would be the high end of the range on eBay. I've seen mint ones go for as little as $350. One just sold a week ago for $380. that would work for me! Edited January 9, 2010 by Bright Moments Quote

brownie Posted January 10, 2010 Report Posted January 10, 2010 After all these years, I'm surprised that there still is eBay craziness. The days of people tearing their hair out to get a copy of "True Blue" (Tina Brooks) and the JRVG of "Blue Train" (by, err ....) ought to be long gone, after all the re-re-reissues. And I still don't know why there is all the fuss about original Blue Note LPs. The craziness is still going strong. Just from the past two weeks, here are prices reached by original BN LPs (all monos): Walter Davis 'Davis Cup' $2,000 Johnny Griffin 'The Congregation' $1,875 Kenny Dorham 'Afro-Cuban' $1,631 Eric Dolphy 'Out to Lunch' $1,524 Jutta Hipp 'With Zoot Sims' $1,338 Louis Smith 'Here Comes Louis Smith' $1,275 Louis Smith 'Smithville' $1,048 Cliff Jordan 'BN1565', $939 ... sidewinder Posted January 10, 2010 Report Posted January 10, 2010 (edited) Eric Dolphy 'Out to Lunch' $1,524 What?! My NYC mono original with 'ear' cost all of £10. And that was this century too.. Edited January 10, 2010 by sidewinder Quote

neveronfriday Posted January 10, 2010 Report Posted January 10, 2010 (edited) My last music-related purchase from eBay was, as far as I recall, in 2005 or 2006. Anything/everything I'm usually interested in is way over-priced nowadays, especially because some collectors seem to have money growing out of their ears. It's amazing to see how lazy some people seem to have become. They have the cash and aren't about to leave the house to save a mere $1000. I've become, out of necessity, a bargain hunter elsewhere and, as this forum shows, there are tons of good bargains to be had all around. Edited January 10, 2010 by neveronfriday Quote
kh1958 Posted January 10, 2010 Report Posted January 10, 2010 There are plenty of LP bargains on ebay--you just have to concentrate on on high quality labels that are not so trendy/collector oriented--impulse and Prestige (later pressings, anyway), for example. Quote

I really want to find this set - at a reasonable price! The seller incorrectly listed this set as pop and got the release date wrong, it came out in 1991, as I have a promo copy of it. With so many Mosaic fetching $50 or more per disc, I would think $800 or more would be the going price, as it has been out of print since 1994. I'm wondering why the seller didn't include the number of the set, too. Quote

Adams Apple To be fair, the seller is 100% reliable and honest, and it is the mono pressing. Perhaps those are scarce? I'll just stick with my RVG CD though! Quote

WarpedOrb Posted January 13, 2010 Report Posted January 13, 2010 A used cassette of Joe Henderson's Double Rainbow in "acceptable" condition for $100. Haha, holy crap. Am I missing something? Quote

colinmce Posted January 25, 2010 Report Posted January 25, 2010 I keep getting psyched out by a guy who is listing discs 8-10 from the Roland Kirk set for $150. On what planet is this reasonable? Quote

Hank Mobley Another one going even higher; $2,616 Hank Mobley Insane, especially for a VG+ (or more likely, VG) copy. Yeah, especially since you can get the new Music Matters 45rpm 12"s for $50 and they'll sound better and look better (nice gatefold). Good album though. Quote
clifford_thornton Posted January 28, 2010 Report Posted January 28, 2010 Even a nice King pressing probably wouldn't set you back much more than $50. Quote

Yeah, especially since you can get the new Music Matters 45rpm 12"s for $50 and they'll sound better and look better (nice gatefold). Good album though. No reissue has ever, will ever, look better than the originals. Period. You can argue about the sound, true, but not the printjobs, textures, cardboard quality, colors. No. Being a gatefold makes no difference. But yes, 2k is a bit much even for an original. Quote

FWIW, and I have no relationship to the seller, but an Amazon marketplace vendor supposedly has a 'like new' copy of the full set listed for $140 right now. Quote

They're beautiful in *every* aspect. Now, the originals are great and of course irreplaceable, but if that Mobley were being sold for the same price as the Music Matters - I would consider going with the new Music Matters. The 45 rpm business is a plus and given the fantastic quality of the photo inside the gate fold I'd have to also disagree about it not making a difference. OK, if they were the same price and we're talking about this particular universe I'd most likely purchase the original and assume the seller's a fool. And then I'd put it on Ebay for $2000. micha Posted March 3, 2010 Report Posted March 3, 2010 I thought this was kind of crazy - the Columbia Small Group Swing Sessions going for $296 a few days ago. Especially considering it was still in stock and selling for $134 through Collectors Choice until earlier today (seeing those prices on eBay, I couldn't pass it up any longer and picked up the last one they had). mellowT Posted March 14, 2010 Report Posted March 14, 2010 I think eBay craziness also applies to sellers as well as buyers. Check out this amazing steal: Buddy De Franco Mosaic Box Set You would have had to pull the trigger within 15 mins of its listing. He also sold a George Lewis for the same price. Not quite as dramatic, but still . Quote

Check out this amazing steal: Buddy De Franco Mosaic Box Set You would have had to pull the trigger within 15 mins of its listing. He also sold a George Lewis for the same price. Not quite as dramatic, but still . I noticed this too. I was confused by it because don't auctions that end with "Buy It Now" usually say so? So I was puzzled how this auction played out. This reminds me of the daydream I have every spring about finding a garage sale where some nice old lady is selling her dearly departed husband's Mosiac Sets. She laments those big old black boxes and can't imagine that anyone would really be interested in them. She then proceeds to give me a bargain basement price where I get multiple sets and change from my $20 bill. And then I always wake up...... Quote
