Mobley recordings (including sidemen dates) NOT on Blue Note

I haven't done the math, but just off the top of my head - I can only think of a very small handful of dates with or by Mobley that weren't on BN. What? - something like 95% (98%?) of his leader-dates were on BN, and I'm pretty sure 90+% of his sidemen dates were also on BN.

With nearly everybody else I can think of (that recorded as much as Hank did), at the very very least 15% or 20% of their recorded output was with other labels.

Any theories??

Any not worth overlooking??

I'm not sure that 90% figure is correct for the sideman sessions. There are Roulette, Savoy, Prestige, Columbia. . . it's maybe 80%? Maybe not, I haven't done the math.

Is his situation Blue Note/other labels any differnt than Lee Morgan?

It's sad that he just wasn't more in demand, especially in the final years. Glad he's gotten attention in the digital age!

Maybe there are some sideman dates I'm forgetting. I though sure it was 90% BN for all of Mobley's output.

Well, it's certainy 90+% for Mobley's 60's output (and what very little there is from the 70's), I'm pretty sure of that.

Hank had a contract w/Blue Note and was considered "hip" but not "cutting edge" in the 60s by the "industry". The fact that most of his non-leader work outside of BN was in the 50s may or may not mean something.

Consider this -where else beside BN would you think that he would turn up? What producer other than Lion do you think would have been prone to using him as a sideman other than Lion?

Prestige's Bob Weinstock might have been that one. Mobley recorded quite a number of session for Prestige in the late '5Os.

Besides his two leaders dates, there were the following albums he took part in:

- Elmo Hope 'Informal Jazz'

- Jackie McLean '4, 5 and 6'

- Tenor Conclave

- Art Farmer 'Farmer's Market'

- All Night Long

Mobley is also featured on the Elvin Jones 'The Midnight Walk' Atlantic album.

Both of the Atlantic Elvin Jones LPs are currently available on one Collectables CD. They're not overwhelming but nice, the Rhodes is not obtrusive. Not quite as consistent as Elvin's Blue Notes, but worth a listen. Mobley's not very spectacular on them - to me Thad Jones is the standout soloist besides Elvin.

Quite - he pretty well gave up producing once he hired Esmond Edwards and Ozzie Cadena. And Esmond was very into the big horn sounds of Hawk, Arnett, Jug, Forrest, Gator, Jaws and Tate. Prestige was doing well with these musicians. Not much room in there for a man with a VERY different sound.

And later in the 60s there was Bob Porter, Cal Lampley, & Don Schlitten. Schlitten might seem like a logical choice, but not necessarily. YEah, he produced Breakthrough on Cobblestone, but that was technically by Artistry In Music, a gorup co-led by Hank & Cedar Walton, with whom Schlitten definitely had a history. Hank had a contract w/BN in the 60s, the label gave him plenty of sidemen dates, so I don't know that he would be somebody to get those type calls from another label. It would be easier to get somebody else who was eitehr not contracted at all, or was contracted w/the same label. After all, that's what BN did.
