the complete prestige thelonius monk recordings on concord. it's very good and they are k2s. and it features an amazing miles davis session with the modern jazz giants, i think, milt jackson, percy heath and kenny clarke. plus it (the box) has those fabulous sessions with sonny rollins. but what really stands out for me are the piano trios.

Listening to this I had a chuckle wondering what would happen if someone really took this title seriously, and thought "I got this great budget four disc set packed with tunes, and it's THE BEST of Ellington. I'm set." And then one day bought "A Drum is a Woman," the Mosaic "Newport," "The Far East Suite," or "Blues in Orbit" or "The Jaywalker". . . .

Inspired by my visit to Ma Rainey's last home and grave today: Mother of the Blues (JSP); disc five.

"They say that I do it;

Ain't nobody caught me.

Y'all got to prove it on me."

Disc four today. I don't know who plays trombone on the August, 1927 sessions - "Big Boy Blues" through "Oh Papa Blues" - but it ain't Kid Ory. I don't care what the liner notes or Brian Rust say; it sounds nothing like Ory. Where are the "experts'" ears?
