RDK
Great article. DuNann's long been my favorite engineer. One of my best sounding LPs is an original Stereo Records pressing of "Poll Winners." Sounds amazing!
Guest Bill Barton
Thanks for the link. What a fascinating article! And he lives "just up the road" from me too...
mtodde
Thanks for the link. What a fascinating article! And he lives "just up the road" from me too... That is a great article and it gives some insight into how the music was recorded.
Ron S
Another big thanks for posting that! I'm a big Contemporary/Roy DuNann/Howard Holzer fan, and am constantly amazed whenever I play one of their recordings. Fascinating article! JohnS
Thanks for posting Porcy. DuNann's sound was great and had a special quality, if it's not too sacriligeous I prefer it to RVG.
Jim Alfredson
I remember reading that article when it came out (and when I actually subscribed to Stereophile). Good interview.

AllenLowe
great thing about it is that he reiterates how basically simple the recording process, with this kind of music, is: 1) good room 2) good microphones 3) close miking 4) no heavy isolation - permit a natural sound space with a modicum of baffling 5) clean signal path - the best recording I ever did was with myself, Roswell Rudd, and a quartet in Verna Gillis's storage room - we had good mikes and a nice analog 8 track and I set it up myself - Roswell told me it was the best anyone had ever captured his sound -and it was done on a budget

chewy-chew-chew-bean-benitez
<li>Wigville Inc. : Shorty Rogers/Shelly Manne Modern Animation on the West Coast what do u think this one is? ---------------- dude roy dunann lives like 15 min. from me (pending no traffic). i did look him up one, maybe i have his address, i dont know. i cant just show up there and bother the guy, he must be in his 90s. i know i should though, right
JSngry
You should, but only after you set it up in advance. Cold-calling Lou Donaldson is one thing (and a fine thing), but just showing up at somebody's house unannounced, that's kinda...lacking a critical degree of separation, if you know what I mean. AllenLowe
DuNann is terrific, but I reiterate, it ain't rocket surgery. And it can be relatively easily approximated today, with a good room, decent mikes, and 24 bit recording.,
